Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram
October 6, 2009

Donald Francis Prince, 99, of Framingham, Mass., died Oct. 3, 2009, at Metro West Medical Center in Framingham, Mass., after a brief illness.

Until very recently he was an active, self-sufficient man with a wry sense of humor, who lived independently in his home of 70 years with daily visits from his family. He followed Boston sports teams passionately, used his computer to read correspondence and do genealogy research, and was vitally interested in the activities of his offspring. He was a 47-year cancer survivor, and survived open heart surgery at the age of 91. Despite his age, his death came as a shock to his family and friends.

Mr. Prince was the devoted husband of the late Elaine Bush Prince, and before that, of the late Katherine Hallowell Prince.

He was born in Auburn, grew up in Portland, and was the son of the late Harry O. and Alma (Smith) Prince.

He graduated from Deering High School in 1927, from Bowdoin College in 1931, and from Harvard Business School in 1933. He was President of his class at Deering, and was the National Secretary for Theta Delta Chi Fraternity while at Bowdoin. He was a leading debater and track competitor at both Deering and Bowdoin, earning him the titles of 'The Prince of debaters' and 'The Prince of one-thousand-yard men.'

After Harvard Business School, Mr. Prince began a 42 year career at Dennison Manufacturing Company, where he managed various operating and product divisions. He served as General Manager of Dennison's Therimage Division, which still holds several patents for the process by which paperless labels are affixed to plastic containers.

Mr. Prince was an avid and active genealogist, sharing this scholarly pursuit with his wife Elaine. He was one of the nation's leading authorities on the lineage of the Prince and Goddard families. Mr. Prince traced his own descent back to William Brewster, the religious elder of the Pilgrims in Plymouth. He and his family were among the first participants in the Framingham Heart Study, and his children are still involved with that program. The family was filmed at home in a 1998 PBS documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of this study and was featured in an article in the New York Times.

He was a long-time Director of Donald Francis Prince South Middlesex Cooperative Bank, a founding Director of the Loring Arena and Bay Path Figure Skating Club, and a member of the New England Genealogical Society. His other interests included photography, journaling, model trains, stamp collecting, wildflowers, and New England college sports. He spent his summers at Wallum Lake in Douglas, Mass.

He married Katherine Hallowell in 1933 and they had three children. After Katherine passed away in 1948, he married Elaine Bush in 1949 and had four additional children.

Together he and Elaine raised a family with 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Don leaves seven cherished children, Barbara Prince Upton and her late husband James of York, Donald F. Prince Jr. and his wife Alice of Kirkland, Wash., Allen Hallowell Prince and his wife Lail of Oxford, Mass., Diane Elaine (Prince) Callahan and her husband Robert of Marlboro, Mass., Jeffrey Bush Prince and his wife Lisa Giallonardo of Natick, Mass., Nancy Louise Prince and her husband Christopher Anschuetz of West Newton, Mass., and Cheryl Ann Prince and her husband Daniel Friend of Framingham. He treasured his grandchildren David Upton, Craig Upton, Kirk Upton, Jay Donald Prince, Debra Prince, Lee Miliano, Dr. Michelle Prince, Jason Prince, Jared Prince, Nathaniel Anschuetz, Nicholas Anschuetz, and Samuel Friend. He was a loving great-grandfather to Cassandra Upton, Chelsey Upton, Sarah Upton, Jennifer Upton, Jefferson Upton, Alexander Donald Prince, Stephanie Prince, Will Roscoe, Kaila Kelly, Vincent Melillo, and Oliver Hodgdon.
