Virginia Thayer Boothby (1919-2011)

Virginia Thayer Boothby was born 1919 in Wakefield, Mass. She attended Abbott/ Andover Academy and Sweet Briar College. In the 1940's she moved to California and lived in Marin for 65 years. She had wonderful memories of her work at College of Marin and hiking the Marin countryside. She will be missed by her children John Boothby and Josselyn Robertson, her grandchildren Erica and Rachel Boothby and Sean Robertson, and her great grandchildren Rose Elena and Quentin Robertson.

John Bowden Boothby was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Lydia White Boothby and Marsh Bowden Boothby. He graduated from Georgetown University and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He resided in the Sleepy Hollow area of Marin County, California, for many years raising his family and commuting to San Francisco where he worked in the international import business. He later resided in San Francisco as a base for global travel, family activities, visits with friends, and evening martinis. He is survived by a son and daughter, both of California, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He will be missed by his many close friends and family.

GARDNER -- Elizabeth B. Goodrich, 90, of 117 Leamy St., died Saturday, March 29, in Heywood Hospital.

She leaves her husband of 17 years, L. John Goodrich; a sister, Ethel Joslin of Gulf Shores, Ala.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her first husband, Donald M. Kauppi, two sons, Lauren and Donald B. Kauppi, a daughter, Donna Clancy, and a sister, Irene Barton, predeceased her. She was born in Boston, daughter of Clarence E. and Marcellina (Grothe) Butler, and had lived in Gardner for many years. She graduated in 1931 from Gardner High School.

Mrs. Goodrich worked many years ago as a clerk at Woolworth's. She was a longtime member of Chestnut Street United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Gardner Grange. She was a former member of the Gardner Emblem Club.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Ethel B. Joslin, 94, of the 900 block of General Stuart Drive, died Oct. 16, 2009.

She was born in Somerville, Mass., and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Marcelina Butler. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Joslin. She was a homemaker and was good at all the important things: kindness, charity, love and compassion.

Ethel is survived by her three children, Nancy Gay of Somerville, Fla., Susan Kavanaugh and husband Phil of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Frederick Joslin Jr. and wife Nancy of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, Craig Kavanaugh, Kathy Smith, Jodi Gay, Angie Benedict, Debbie Villareal and Diane Vachon; and nine great- grandchildren.

GULF SHORES, Ala. - Frederick W. Joslin, 82, of Oyster Bay Village, formerly of Athol, Mass., died July 8 in South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, Foley.

He leaves his wife, Ethel (Butler) Joslin; a son, Frederick Joslin in Virginia; two daughters, Susan E. Kavanaugh of Ipswich, Mass., and Nancy A. Gay of Westfield, Mass.; a sister, Muriel J. Joslin of East Templeton, Mass.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was born in Athol, son of Bertram and Annie C. (Kryander) Joslin, and was a Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946.

Mr. Joslin was a general agent for State Mutual Life in Springfield, Mass., and western New York.

He served on the Board of Selectmen in East Longmeadow, Mass., and in offices of the East Longmeadow United Methodist Church. He also served as a director for many associations in Massachusetts. He served a term on the board of directors of Gulf Shores Golf Club, where he was a member since 1977 and started the "Amigo's" group of golf players. He was also named a Paul Harris fellow by Hampton Roads, Va., Rotary Club in 1998.

TURNER, George Walter, 88, of Richmond, passed away Friday, June 5, 2020.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Edna Turner; brother, Joe Turner; and sister, Agnes Turner.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Leonard; children with his first wife, Carol Turner: George, Rocky (Nancy), Elaine (Jim), Bill (Suzie) and Dan (Kate); 12 grandchildren, Brian, Cassandra, Sarah, Zac, Jenna, Colin, Leilani, Justin, Megan, Ashley, Benjamin and Andrew; stepchildren, Carrie, Melinda and Danny; sisters, Jane McDonough and Edna Quatroche; and numerous nieces and nephews.

George was born on Long Island in Greenport, New York, to Joe and Edna Turner. He was the youngest of five children. After high school, George served in the U.S. Air Force. He later went on to graduate from the University of Delaware. After college, he moved to Northern Virginia, where he spent his career selling computer systems to the government. After he retired, he and his wife, Jean enjoyed traveling (cruises in particular), gardening and camping. George was an avid Washington Redskins fan and enjoyed sharing tales of his childhood with his grandchildren.

MARBLEHEAD - Mrs. Dorothy M. Bartlett, 77, of Marblehead, died Tuesday evening in Lafayette Nursing Home. She was the widow of Edgar I. Bartlett.

Born in Salem, daughter of the late Francis and Bessie (Butler) Stanley, she was a resident of Marblehead for more than 53 years.

Mrs. Bartlett was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Marblehead, and a life member of the Marblehead Chapter OES.

Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. James H. (Marilyn) Quillen and Mrs. F. William (Cynthia) Edwards, both of Marblehead; two sisters, Mrs. Edna Foster of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Mrs. Barbara Davis of Marblehead; four grandchildren, Michael J. and Gregory H. Quillen, Scott W. and Carl R. Edwards, all of Marblehead.

Marblehead - James H. Quillen, 87, of Marblehead, passed away at home with his family by his side on Thursday, August 29, 2019.

Born in Texas on December 6, 1931, he was the beloved son of Hue and Naomi (Spivey) Quillen. He grew up in Haywood, Calif., where he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Jim met his wife Marilyn Bartlett during his military service, and after receiving an honorable discharge in 1954, they set their roots down in her hometown of Marblehead and started a family. For almost 50 years Jim was well known in town as the owner of the family business, Bartlett's Garage, where his sons still continue to serve the community. Along with devoting his time to his family, Jim was an avid golfer, enjoyed boating, and in his later years spent time relaxing on his annual trips to Captiva Island, Florida. For over 50 years he was an active member of the Philanthropic Lodge of Marblehead, the Shriner's, and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Jim will always be remembered for his warm smile and twinkling eyes, and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his children Michael Quillen, and Gregory Quillen and wife Lisa of Marblehead; his grandchildren Leanne Homan and Stephen Quillen; and his great-grandchildren Lucas, Olivia, and Colin Homan. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Marilyn (Bartlett) Quillen.

MARBLEHEAD - Cynthia ( Bartlett) Edwards, age 77, wife of Bill Edwards, with whom she has shared 57 years of marriage, died peacefully at home early Wednesday morning.

A "Header" she was born in the Mary A Alley Hospital, the daughter of the late Edgar and Dorothy (Stanley) Bartlett. A graduate of Marblehead High School, Class of 1952, she was both an All Star member of the field hockey team and a football cheerleader. After receiving her Associates Degree from the Chandler School for Women in May of 1954 where she was the President of her class. She and her husband married, lived in Paris until Mr. Edwards was discharged from the Air Force and began their family.

From kindergarten through adulthood, she and her childhood friend, the late Pat (Crosby) Keiver enjoyed their visits to Camp Whittier on Squam Lake as well as many other adventures. As her family grew, Mrs. Edwards also looked forward to her ski trips to Stowe Vermont with her family. Longtime members of the Boston Yacht Club, she and her husband Bill have spent the last 18 winters living aboard their boat, "Cynthia" in Fort Myers where she has many friends.

An accomplished artisan and instructor, Mrs. Edwards was well known for her hand-made crewel, embroidery, hooked rugs and sailor's valentines. She was an avid reade and most of all she looked forward to being with her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Scott Edwards and his wife Kathleen and Carl Edwards and his wife Diane all of Marblehead, four grandchildren Billy, Jeffery, Jennie and Kyle Edwards all of Marblehead; brother in law Jim Quillen of Marblehead, and all her great friends and neighbors on Summer St.

She was predeceased by her beloved sister Marilyn Quillen.


Frank William Edwards

F. William (Bill) Edwards, 80, died peacefully at the Kaplan House in Danvers early Saturday morning. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Cynthia (Bartlett) Edwards, with whom he had shared 57 years of marriage.

Bill was born in Flushing, N.Y., and was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Birkett) Edwards. He spent his early years in Montreal, Canada, before moving to Marblehead. He is a graduate of Marblehead High School, Class of 1952, where he was an All Star member of the hockey and baseball team. After graduation, he was married and joined the United States Air Force, and he was stationed in Paris, France. Mr. Edwards was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1957, and moved back to Marblehead to begin his family. He was member of the Philanthropic Lodge F.&A.M. Marblehead, past Exalted Ruler of the Marblehead Elks and past Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club. He loved his friends, skiing, boating, and a good cigar.

Most of all he looked forward to being with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by two children, Scott Edwards and his wife, Kathleen, and Carl Edwards and his wife, Diane, all of Marblehead; four grandchildren, Billy, Jeffery, Jennie, and Kyle Edwards, all of Marblehead; brother-in-law, Jim Quillen of Marblehead; his brothers, Donald and Robert; his sister, Libby Ovitt; and all his great friends and neighbors on Summer Street. He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Barbara Pudvah.

Harold I. Stanley, 63, of 2 Spellman Terr., died early Friday morning at Rutland Hospital after a short illness.

He was born May 10, 1907, in Salem, Mass., the son of Francis L. and Bessie (Butler) Stanley.

He was graduated from Salem High School and, in 1928, from Norwich University.

Mr. Stanley had worked for the Central Vermont Public Service Corp. since 1938. He was chief distribution engineer for the company.

He was a member of Grace Congregational Church of Christ; member and past master of Rutland Lodge 79 F&AM, Davenport Chapter 17, Killington Commandery 6, Cairo Temple AAONMS, Past Masters Association, past district deputy grand master of the fourth Masonic District of Vermont, Vermont Professional Engineers Association, and the Rutland Country Club.

He is survived by his widow, Cora (Austin) Stanley; one daughter, Miss Barbara J. Stanley of Rutland; two sons, Richard A. Stanley of Las Vegas, Nev., and Harold A. Stanley of Rutland; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Foster of St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs. Edgar Bartlett and Mrs. Ernest Davis, both of Marblehead, Mass,; one brother, Clifford Stanley of Danvers, Mass.; one granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Cora B. Stanley, 73, of 42 Edgerton St., died Saturday in Rutland Hospital.

Born in North Brooksville, Maine, June 3, 1907, she was a graduate of the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

Mrs. Stanley was a member of Grace Congregational United Church of Christ, the Ladies Oriental Shrine, DAR, Rutland County Nurses Association, Rutland Country Club and the Chaffee Art Gallery Association. She had been very active in Girl Scouting.

Her husband, Harold I. Stanley, died in 1970.

She leaves a daughter, Barbara J. Stanley, Bolton; two sons, Richard A. Stanley, Halloman AFB, N.M., and Harold A. Stanley, Rochester University in New York City; two sisters, Doris E. Austin, west Hartford, Conn., and Mrs. A. J. (Miriam) Crawford, Belleair Bluffs, Fla., nieces and nephews.

MARBLEHEAD - Barbara Davis, 83, formerly of Martin Street, died Sunday at the Lafayette Convalescent Home. She was the wife of the late Ernest J. Davis.

Born in Salem on Sept. 9, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Bessie Stanley. A graduate of Marblehead High School and the Salem Normal School, she was a teacher at the Glover School in Marblehead for 25 years.

Mrs. Davis was a former member of St. Andrew's Church, the Marblehead Senior Citizens, the Marblehead Bowling League, the Marblehead Hobbs Community Club, the Massachusetts Teacher's Association and the American Association for Retired Persons. She also enjoyed needlework.

She is survived by a son, and daughter-in-law, Walter E. and Beth Davis of Windham, N.H., and Nadine Lunt of Marblehead; five grandchildren, Jason, Jonathan and Matthew Lunt and Benjamin and Christopher Davis; and her sister-in-law and her husband, Velma and Homer Clouter of Weymouth.

MARBLEHEAD - Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 o'clock for Ernest J. Davis, 55, of 5 Martin St., who died suddenly Wednesday in Danvers.

He was born in Kineo, Maine, son of the late John and Lena Jensen Davis. He was a plumber, employed at the Danvers State Hospital, and financial secretary of the plumber's union local.

A veteran of World War Two, Davis served in the Air Force and was a member of Post 32, American Legion.

He was affiliated with Philanthropic Lodge, A.F. & A.M.; Masonic Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Salem; the Massachusetts Consistory, and the Aleppo Shrine of Boston.

Besides his wife, Barbara Stanley Davis, a teacher in the Marblehead school system, he is survived by a daughter, Nadine Davis of Marblehead, a son, Walter, studying at the Southeastern Massachusetts Technical Institute in New Bedford, and a sister, Mrs. Thelma [sic, Velma] Clouter of Weymouth.

Salem - Walter Ernest Davis, 76, of Salem, NH passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH after a brief period of declining health.

Born on July 26, 1946, to Barbara Larcum (Stanley) and Ernest John Davis,

Walter was raised in Marblehead, MA and attended local schools, graduating from Marblehead High School in 1964. As a youth, Walter played baseball, golf and tennis, and would enjoy the company of friends, spending time on the water, boating around, water skiing, and sailing. Walter studied electrical engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA, receiving an Associate degree in 1966, and continued on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree at Southeastern Massachusetts University (now UMass Dartmouth) in 1970. Mid-career, Walter went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from Rivier College in Nashua, NH.

After completion of his undergraduate degrees, Walter was hired by General Electric, where he remained employed as an Electrical Engineer for 43 years, until his retirement in 2012. So well respected by his colleagues and customers as a brilliant engineer, in retirement, he started Davis Power System Consulting LLC, and worked a few more years on his own to satisfy the demand for his own specific industry talents. A common theme throughout his career was that, although a customer would contract GE for the work, the stipulation was really, "We want Walter to do the job."

Walter married his now former wife, Beth, in Fairhaven, MA, moved briefly to North Andover, MA, and finally settled in Windham, NH, where they lived together for more than 25 years, raising their two sons, Benjamin and Christopher, and where he was actively involved in coaching youth sports for many years. After a long marriage, Walter moved to Salem, NH in 1998, where he lived with his beloved beagle, Bull, and reconnected with his eventual longtime partner, Carolyn.

Walter was a lifelong skier, and enjoyed playing golf, coaching his sons' baseball and soccer teams, and tinkering up at his summer lake cottage in Alton Bay, NH. Walter was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, and shared season tickets to Fenway Park for many years. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren, traveling with his longtime partner, Carolyn, and spending time researching his family's genealogy.

Walter is survived by his sons, Benjamin Walter Davis and his wife Melissa of Bow, NH, and Christopher Howland Davis of Raymond, NH; his longtime partner, Carolyn King of Billerica, MA; his grandchildren, Tyler Benjamin Davis and Stella Diozzi Davis; his former wife, Beth Howland Davis of Windham, NH; his sister, Nadine Lunt of Port Charlotte, FL; as well his nephews, Jason, Jonathan, and Matthew Lunt.

BELMONT - David L. Krause of Belmont, entered into rest on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. He was 85 years of age.

Born in Waltham, David had been a lifelong resident of Belmont. He attended Northeastern University and for over 45 years worked for the telephone company as an electrical engineer. During World War II, he served proudly in the Army Air Corps. David was a member of the Waverley Post VFW #1272 where he served as Captain of their color guard unit; member of the Belmont Retired Men's Club; and was a longtime volunteer with Belmont's Meals on Wheels program. He enjoyed golf, scout leadership, and was an avid fisherman.

Beloved husband of Phyllis T. (Flynn) Krause. Dear and devoted father of their children Linda M. Krause of Hudson and Michael E. Krause of Gloucester, and father of William Krause of FL. Brother of Roger Krause of Reisterstown, MD.

Roger A. Krause, 92, a resident of Reisterstown MD, who was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore following a period of failing health.

Roger was born March 7, 1928 in Waltham, MA, the son of William J. and Bess Alderman Krause, and attended local schools, before enrolling in Norwich University, earning an Engineering Degree. As a member of the Old Guard, he was looking forward to celebrating his 70th reunion this year.

Achieving Captain, Roger was very proud of his 15 years of service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, serving in 3 wars. In addition to Korea and Vietnam he was stationed in Paris, serving at SHAPE, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. While there he and Shirley traveled extensively making treasured memories. In civilian life he worked at Western Electric and later in civil service for the Navy in Crystal City, VA.

Later he enjoyed playing board games while vacationing with his family in Maine. He was a long time member of the Reisterstown United Methodist Church, and member of their choir for over 30 years. In recent times, he was a member of the Senior Songbirds at the Reisterstown Community Center.

Roger wass predeceased by his brother David L. Krause. Survivors include his wife Shirley Marsh Krause, their son Peter Krause and his wife Eileen, all of Reisterstown, MD, their son Thomas Krause and his wife Laura of Yarmouth, ME, and three grandchildren.
