Coleman George Woodward

Coleman George Woodward, 84, of Mt. Pleasant Street, died Wednesday at his home.

He was born in Jonesport, a son of George E. and Ida M. Church Woodward, attended school in Jonesport and spent most of his early years at Wood Island Light. He later attended school in Biddeford and was a 1936 graduate of Rockport High School.

He married the former Barbara Claire Colby in Rockport on April 18, 1942, and they lived here in a log home.

Mr. Woodward served as a staff sergeant during World War II in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946.

He worked at Knox Woolen Mill in Camden for several years and later at Coastal Dry Cleaners, which eventually became Bay View Cleaners. Mr. Woodward was a caretaker at private homes in his later years.

At one time, Mr. Woodward served as a pastor at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rockland.

He was a sports fan, and played in the local twilight league baseball league. He was also a fan of basketball and played golf.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 58 years, Barbara Colby Woodward of Rockport; two daughters, Mrs. Lee (Eileen) Adams of Raymond and Mrs. Brad (Jan) Meservey of Rockport; a son, Bruce of Rockport; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Barbara) St. Clair of South Thomaston and Sheila Hastings of Thomaston; a brother, Richard of Independence, Mo.; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Mrs Lucy K Hopkins, 94, a resident of Orleans, died June 21 at Brewster Senior Care Center in Brewster.

She was the wife of the late Reuben S.B. Hopkins.

Mrs. Hopkins was born in Jamaica Plain and raised in Eastham. She attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. After her graduation in 1928, she taught French and Latin in the Wellfleet High School.

As a member of the Orleans Recreation Committee, she founded the swimming program 50 years ago for the town's children. The beach at Pilgrim Lake was established because of her vision and efforts.

She was quick to spot a need and to develop its resolution. When the Orleans High School boys basketball team earned an invitation to a state tournament in the old Boston Garden, she pushed the principal to release the pupils early and hired the buses to take them to Boston.

She worked at the town information booth for 25 years and volunteered at the local council on aging.

In 1942, she began serving the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Red Cross in various capacities including ambulance driver, nurse's aide, chairman of volunteers, and member and chairman of the board of directors. The blood drives she organized and directed throughout the Cape, over many years, earned her the affectionate title of "Lady Dracula." The North East Region of the American Red Cross and the Cape Cod Chapter honored her dedicated service with several awards.

During World War II, she was an officer in the Massachusetts Women's Defense Corps, as well as an ambulance driver and air raid warden.

She organized the Barnstable County March of Dimes 60 years ago and directed this fund drive for many years.

She was a member of the Federated Church of Orleans, where she was a deaconess, founder of the Bible study group, and instrumental in starting the early breakfast services. She twice served as worthy matron of the Orleans Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Orleans Legion Auxiliary and the Nauset Business and Professional Women's Club.

In 1988, she was recognized by the Orleans Oracle with its "Salt of the Earth" award.

The Selectmen's Annual Good Citizenship Award in 1993 commended her civic contributions and her perfect record of voting in every election since 1928.

She was honored as grand marshal of the Fourth of July Parade in 1997.

She leaves a daughter, Lucy J. Buckley of Chatham; two sons, Stephen A. Hopkins and Richard H. Hopkins, both of Orleans; a sister, Eleanor K. Blakeslee of Warwick, R.I.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Esther T. TReed, 73, of the Fines Creek Community, passed away on Jan. 14, 2009.

Born in Eastham on May 7, 1935, to the late Theodore and Esther Knowles Tibbals, Esther grew up there and graduated from Orleans High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Dick Reed, on May 21, 1955. She earned her RN from Children's Hospital in Boston and worked in home health care. Like a true Yankee woman, she was known for her faith, honestly speaking her mind, and a steadfast gift for helping anyone in need, including dogs. She is remembered for baking cookies, reading stories, and working with Meals on Wheels.

She is survived by three children, Amy and her husband, Don Miller, of Zionville, N.C., Dan and his wife, Ellen Reed, of New Hampshire, and Jonathan and his wife, Michelle Reed, of Ontario, Canada; five siblings, Marie Taves, Lucy Ott, Ted Tibbals, Fred Turner and Frannie Francis; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial service will be at 1 p. m. Friday, Aug. 12, at La Chapelle de Martin and Castille for Thelma May Knowles, age 94, the former Thelma Kibble, who died at 8: 40 p. m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, in Magnolia Estates Nursing Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Sally Dooley and her husband, John of Lafayette; one son, Kenneth " Ken " Knowles and his fiancee, Barbara Henry of Lake Charles; six grandchildren, Don Puckett and his wife, Moreen, Robert Puckett and his wife, Lisa, Jo D. Breaux and her husband, John, Susan Wolf and her husband, Kevin, Cathi Pavy and her husband, Francis and Meghan E. Dooley; 12 greatgrandchildren; one greatgreatgrandchild; and two sisters, Blanche Kaye of Yarmoth Port, Mass., and Lois F. Chafe of Pembroke, Mass.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Wilton C. Knowles; parents, George P. and Freda R. Irvine Kibble; and two sisters, Ruth Costello and Mildred Sanford.

Mrs. Knowles was a native of Boston and had been a resident of Lake Charles. Prior to her retire - ment , Mrs. Knowles worked for MA Investment Trust, Gulf Oil Company for 10 years, Lake Charles Chamber of Commerce and Powell Lumber Company. She was a member of various secretarial organizations and a volunteer at St. Patrick Hospital.

Blakeslee, Eleanor (Knowles) Age 97 Died Saturday, July 15, 2017, in Smithfield, RI.

She was the youngest of seven children born to the late Abbott Knowles and Flora Schaffer.

She married the late R. Randall Blakeslee and started a family before moving to Rhode Island in 1953. They lived in Omaha, NE, from 1968 to 1976. Eleanor had a career in family life and sex education, substance abuse, and marriage counseling. She worked with CODAC and East Bay Mental Health in Rhode Island and Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She volunteered in the Girl Scouts, Methodist Youth Fellowship, the PTA, and on the Warwick Youth Advisory Council. She enjoyed gardening, bird-watching, playing the piano, and cross-country camping trips.

Eleanor is survived by six sons and daughters and their partners: John Blakeslee; Carolyn Blakeslee and Andrew May; Paul and Jane Blakeslee; David Blakeslee; Linda Blakeslee and Roy Henderson; Peter Blakeslee and DeAnn Stover; plus eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Janet Colby Bills, 70, of Edgewater, died of cancer yesterday at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mrs. Bills was born in New London, Conn. She attended public schools in both Massachusetts and Connecticut and studied one year at Connecticut College. She moved to Washington, D.C., in the late 1940s. A domestic worker most of her life, she also worked as a secretary at the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington for two years.

For 12 years, she volunteered at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.

Her interests included gardening and traveling.

Surviving are her daughter, Melinda Bills of Edgewater, and one brother, Wells Colby of Richmond, Va.

"Ex-Judge Arthur L.Mundo Dies"

Arthur L. Mundo, a Superior Court judge here for many years and one of the youngest men to be appointed a judge in California died Monday at Balboa Naval Hospital. He was 88.

Cremation is planned, with the ashes to be scattered at sea by the Navy. No services are scheduled.

Judge Mundo was just 33 when he was appointed a Justice Court judge, equivalent to a present-day municipal judge. James Rolph Jr. He was elected and then re-elected and retired in 1958. Judge Mundo was known to thousands of newcomers to this country as the judge who administered their oath of citizenship, a duty of his until the U.S. District Court took over naturalizations in 1957.

In addition to his 30 years as a judge, he also had a career in the Navy. He was a veteran of World War 1 and a member of the Naval Reserve. He was recalled to active duty in 1942 and was a commander of a Navy legal staff in Pearl Harbor during World War 2.

He left the Navy in 1945 and was reappointed to the bench. A native of Boston, he earned his undergraduate and law degrees from George Washington University in Washington D.c. and began his San Diego law practice in 1924. He was a deputy district attorney and then an assistant city attorney when he was appointed to the court. He retired under a new law that permitted jurists who have served 20 years to retire at 60. Since retirement, his life was filled with traveling, writing, and enjoying homes in La Jolla, Point Loma, and San Diego.

Judge Mundo is survived by his wife, Clara; a daughter, Barbara Bouque of San Francisco:  two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Edith M. (Tingley) Whiteside 94, of Falmouth, died Nov 12, at her home with her family at her side. She was the wife of the late William F. Whiteside who predeceased her in 1964. Born in Everett, she was the daughter of the late Hiram J. and Edith (Smith) Tingley.

Edith worked for the Auguet Electronics in Mashpee. She enjoyed knitting for the Weeks Shop and working as a seamstress for Eds cleaners. She also enjoyed needlepoint and was an avid Red Sox fan.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly L. White and her husband, Kenneth of E. Falmouth and Shirley Fogarty and her husband, Bart of West Wareham; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was sister of the late Hazel Whiteside and Ruth Maser.

She was the wife Of the late Harold R. Maser. They were married for 41 years.

Mrs. Maser was born In North Reading and graduated from Brown High School In Malden. She was active In First Baptist Church Of Wilmington, where she was the organist and pianist, and was involved with the Grange In Wilmington. She moved to Falmouth In 1987.

She enjoyed gardening and music.

Surviving are two daughters, Virginia R. Morris Of Whitefield, Maine, and Elizabeth A. Goding Of East Falmouth; a son, Harold R. Maser Jr. Of Paulsboro, N.J.; two sisters, Edith White Of Falmouth and Hazel Whiteside Of East Weymouth; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
