July 30, 1996A longtime farmer who also raised race horses, George Philbrook, 78, died at Southwest Washington Medical Center on Sunday, July 28, 1996. He had lived in the Vancouver area 48 years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia, at home; one daughter, Chris Philbrook of Vancouver; one son, John R. of Vancouver; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Philbrook was born May 17, 1918, in Portland. He started farming on 10 acres in Ridgefield, eventually expanding to 130 acres in Pleasant Valley. In addition to raising chickens and selling eggs, Mr. Philbrook grew corn and beans. In the mid-1970s Mr. Philbrook began growing berries, many for U-pick.
He served on the board of the Federal Land Band and Farm Home Administration and was a member of Manor Grange. He loved animals and since 1972 had raced quarter horses in the Northwest. He was a member of the Oregon Quarter Horse Association, the Northern Racing Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.

February 3, 2001Virginia E. Philbrook, who lived 53 years in the Vancouver area, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Vancouver. She was 80.
Mrs. Philbrook and her husband of 54 years, George, were farmers and raised berries on a 130-acre farm in Pleasant Valley. After her husband died in 1996, she continued to operate the farm.
She was a member of Manor Grange, Oregon Quarter Horse Association and American Quarter Horse Association.
Survivors include one daughter, Chris Philbrook of Vancouver; one son, John R. of Vancouver; one sister, LeClede Porter of Sandpoint, Idaho; and three grandchildren.

January 7, 1996A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 1996, in Salmon Creek United Methodist Church for Catherine ''Katie'' P. Blanding, who died Jan. 2 of lung cancer at age 74.
Mrs. Blanding was born July 22, 1921, in Portland. She lived in Vancouver, Wash., for 35 years.
She was office manager for her husband's heating and air-conditioning business. Her husband, Kennard, died in 1978.
She retired from the University of Portland's financial aid office in 1989.
She attended the church.
Surviving are her son, Kennard of Vancouver; daughters, Catherine Bigelow of La Center, Wash., Deborah VanderHoek of Oak Harber, Wash., and Susan of Vancouver; brother, George Philbrook of Vancouver; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

July 18, 2012FREEPORT � Bernice Eleanor Williams, 90 of Freeport died quietly in her sleep at her home with her family by her side in the evening of July 11, 2012. She was born on January 09, 1922 the daughter of the late Frank and Bernice Mello.
Eleanor served as a Corporal in the Marines during WWII and later worked at Eastland Shoe for over 40 years before retiring to her farm in Freeport.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Warren Williams and is survived by her daughters Susan Vokey of Freeport, Wanda Paulin of Windham, son Warren Williams Jr. of Freeport, many loving Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren as well as 3 Brothers: Brian Mello of Poland, Arthur Mello of Brunswick and Richard Mello of Hawaii.

Richard "Brother Mel" Mello, 82, of Kapolei, an Air Force and Navy veteran, Honolulu Police Department motorcycle patrol officer and minister, died in Honolulu. He was born in Blue Ridge, Maine. He is survived by son Norman, daughter Norma Hughes and brothers Brian and Robert.

March 30, 1989Andrew W. Carter, 74, of Dennis, died Monday, Mar. 20 at Cape Cod Hospital.
Born in Brockton, he was a graduate of Brockton High School and had worked for the Brockton Savings Bank. After moving to Dennis 23 years ago, he worked as a statistician for the former Bass River Savings Bank, retiring in 1979. During retirement his hobby was raising and selling trees and shrubs, about which he had extensive knowledge. He was treasurer of Bass River Community Church, where he frequently sang duets with his wife.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor (Saline) Carter of Dennis; a son; a brother; a sister and a granddaughter.

June 14, 2011Eleanor Genevieve (Saline) Carter passed away June 12, in Saco, Maine, at the age of 91.
She was the widow of Andrew W. Carter, who passed away in 1989, after their marriage of 45 years.
Mrs. Carter was born in Brockton and graduated from Brockton High School in 1937. She worked in Boston at the Massachusetts Rating and Inspection Bureau, and following her marriage in 1944 she lived in Brockton with her family. In 1966 she, her husband, and son Richard moved to Dennis, Massachusetts, where she was active in the Bass River Baptist Church. She was on the Deacon and Finance boards, was President of the Ladies' Society, and sang in the choir as well as in duets with her husband. She was also active in the Cape Cod Christian Women's Club, serving as Chair in 1973 and 1974. She became a member of South Yarmouth United Methodist Church in 2004. In 2009 Mrs. Carter moved into the Wardwell Home in Saco, Maine, to be near her son and his family.
She is survived by her son Richard and his wife Nancy, of Alfred, Maine, and her granddaughter, Selina Carter, currently in graduate school at Syracuse University, as well as by her sister-in-law, June Saline of Harwich, widow of Eleanor Carter's brother, George Saline.

May 1, 2011Karen A. Carter, of Easton, died on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the Southeast Nursing and Skilled Care Center in Easton. She was 56 years old. She was born in Brockton; daughter of the late Raymond and Mary (Williams) Carter.
She was the sister of John Jack A. Carter of Easton and the late Diane L. Carter.
Karen worked at the North Easton Savings Bank since 1972 and was a Senior Vice President at the Bank. She was a member of the Easton Historical Society and the treasurer of the Easton Salvation Army. Karen enjoyed reading.

October 19, 1991Lloyd N. Alden of Brockton, a retired Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority employee, died Monday at Goddars Memorial Hospital in Stoughton after a brief illness. He was 70.
Born in Boston, he was a longtime resident of Brockton and attended Brockton public Schools.
Mr. Alden was employed as a bus driver for the MBTA for many years.
He was a member of the Olivet Memorial Church.
Mr. Alden is survived by two sons, David L. of El Granada, Calif., and Daniel S. of Beverly; two sisters, Marie and Helen Sears, both of Brockton; a brother, Williamn of Brockton; six grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

September 17, 2008BURNHAM - Charlotte I. Strout, 79, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family, Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008.
She was born May 2, 1929, in Ellsworth.
She attended school in Waltham and Bucksport before moving to Hulls Cove and marring Ira Strout in November 1949. They moved to Burnham in 1977.
Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, Ira; a son, Dennis; and two daughters, Gloria Strout and Nancy Dunkel.
She is survived by eight children, Clifford of Yarmouth, Donna Phelps of Englewood, Fla., Eugene and his wife, Roberta, of Bar Harbor, Marcia Damon of Pittsfield, Trudy White of Lewiston, Beverly King and husband, Bryan, of Burnham, Clayton and his wife, Denise, of Seawall, Arnold and friend, Heidi, of Ellsworth. Charlotte has 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

August 15, 2011RANDOLPH - Ruth C. Zervas, 98, of Randolph passed away peacefully on Aug. 12, 2011.
She was born in Blue Hill, Maine, and lived in several areas throughout Maine. She was a graduate of Gardiner High School, where her father was superintendent of schools. She earned a degree from Bates College and was elected a member of the Bates College Key Club.For more than 25 years she was the alumni class secretary of her graduating class. She also attended the Modern School of Applied Art in Boston, studying clothing design, copy writing and related subjects. She taught at the former Stevens School in Hallowell and at Long Lang School in Middletown, Conn. She lived in Hartford, Conn., for many years, returning to Maine with her children after the death of her husband.
After relocating to Maine, she worked for the Maine Department of Human Services with an emphasis in finding foster homes for children who were in state custody.
She was a member of the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church of Gardiner.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carter Zervas, and her son.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Brown and her husband, Charles, her daughter-in-law, Rachel Zervas and her grandchildren, Jessica Brown and Claudia Zervas and various other relatives.

December 8, 2020Randolph - Cynthia A. Brown, age 74 of Randolph passed away Friday, December 4, 2020 at her home. Cindy, as she was called, was born and raised in Hartford, CT. After the sudden passing of her father, Myron Zervas, the family moved to Gardiner, ME to reside with her grandmother, Pauline Carter.
Cindy graduated from Gardiner Area High School and then attended Ricker College where she met her husband Charles. Cindy transferred to Thomas College, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. She furthered her education at Williams College and the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
Cindy started working at Depositors Trust, now Key Bank. She gained experience in auditing, marketing, and the executive area, retiring as Vice President and Trust Administrator.
Cindy was a Notary and a past Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kennebec Valley. She loved all animals and felt no animal should go hungry. She had a fondness for cats and always had rescue cats.
Cindy was predeceased by her grandparents, Father, Myron, Mother Ruth Carter and brother, Carter.
She is survived by her husband Charlie Brown and her daughter Jessica Brown.

April 10, 2004LANDSDOWNE, Pa. -- Carter Michael Zervas, 52, formerly of Gardiner, Maine, passed away on April 2, 2004, at Keystone House in Wyndmoor after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Hartford, Conn., and raised in Hartford and Gardiner. He graduated from Gardiner Area High School, graduated with honors and a bachelor's degree from Colby College and received a master of fine arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Brooklyn Museum School in New York. Carter was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant from the prestigious Institute of International Education, which allowed him to study art in Florence, Italy. After returning to the United States, he and his wife returned to Florence, where they lived and traveled for two years.
At an early age, Carter displayed a talent and passion for art. A realistic painter, his work was exhibited professionally in many galleries in the Philadelphia area. His work also has been exhibited at the Gold/Smith Gallery in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, Maine. His subject matter included landscapes, figures and still-lifes. His later work explored storytelling via large, imaginative paintings, often with humorous or melodramatic overtones.
Carter is survived by his wife, Rachael, and daughter Claudia, of Pennsylvania; his mother, Ruth Zervas of Randolph, Maine; his sister, Cynthia Brown and her husband, Charles, of Randolph, and their daughter, Jessica; and several nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was predeceased by his father, Myron Zervas; and his grandparents, Michael and Julia Zervas and A. Raymond and Pauline Carter.
