The South County Spotlight (Scappoose, OR)
November 8, 2018George Warren LeMont passed away on November 3, 2018, at the Thanksgiving House in St. Helens with family at his side.
He was born in his grandmother's home to Frank and Marian (Sutton/Gilliam) LeMont in St. Helens on October 5, 1933, and lived in St. Helens and Columbia City his whole life. He would say he "never got enough money saved to get out of town," but he loved it here. He enjoyed the history of St. Helens and the fact that his ancestors came around The Horn from Bath, Maine, by ship and up the Columbia River to St. Helens in the 1850s.
He will be greatly missed and was known for his humor and quick wit. He was also known for his big smile and hugs, especially in his later years. A sign hung on his door at the Thanksgiving House which said, "Hug Department: Always Open (24-7)." Even as his health failed, and he and his wife moved to adult foster care homes, he maintained an amazing attitude and made it easy for others to help him. His family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers he has had and Kindred Hospice.
Growing up in St. Helens, George and his buddies were able to enjoy the small, relatively safe town that St. Helens was during his childhood. They roamed the entire town and spent hours along the river and in the river and managed to survive! He attended St. Helens grade and high schools and Portland State University taking courses in Business Management and Accounting.
He had a variety of jobs starting at a young age. At the age of 18, he joined the Army Guards because he and other St. Helens boys were strongly urged to join by their football coach who was Captain Dick Miller. As it turned out, George served 15 years with the Army National Guard and eight and one-half years with the Army Reserves (Infantry) and was a Captain when he retired.
He married Betty Means in 1952 and they raised four children. He began his full-time working career at this time when he and his mother became partners of LeMont's Highway Market along Highway 30 near Wikstrom Road. Next, he owned and operated LeMont's Chevron Gas Station along Highway 30 in St. Helens. He had a variety of jobs, including log scaling, a wrecking yard business, and he worked as a truck driver for various companies where he hurt his back and was off full-time work for a time. During this time, he went to Portland State and then prepared taxes for others and got an office job at Kaiser and Owens Corning (Kaiser sold to them). He started in the Production Department and moved to the Customer Service and Invoicing Department. He worked there 11 years until the plant closed in 1981. He and Betty divorced and both remarried.
After Owens Corning closed, he became a self-employed handyman. In 1983 he was hired as Public Works Director for Columbia City. At that time the population was only about 700 and he was the only full-time Public Works employee. He took care of water, sewer, streets, mowing, building maintenance, and also served as the building official, deputy marshal and dogcatcher (a risky job providing Bonnie and Clyde, two dogs that needed homes). During this time, he married Jean (Suhrbier) DeFrance, and they worked together for Columbia City for many years and retired in 1999. This marriage also brought two more daughters into his life.
During his adult life, George enjoyed many things some of which were: motorcycle riding, camping, boating, fishing, digging clams, crabbing, hunting, bowling, basketball, RV'ing, playing cribbage, shopping for antiques, reading, and spending time with family and friends (and making margaritas).
He was a member of the St. Helens Elks Lodge for 54 years. He held offices locally including Exalted Ruler and the offices leading up to that position. He also served as the District Deputy for the Oregon Northwest District for two years and held a number of state offices as well.
He was also a member of First Lutheran Church in St. Helens and enjoyed the fellowship of his church family and also served on its Council and the Maintenance Committee.
He leaves a family who treasured him as a fun and very supportive and loving man: Valerie Wick (Rich) of Paradise, Texas or Mesa, Arizona (depending on the season), Curtis (Lance) LeMont (Tami) of Columbia City, Joanne Pellham (Steve) of St. Helens, George LeMont Jr. (Jamie) of Columbia City, Maria Weiss (Troy) of St. Helens, Jana Baltzell (Brian) of Scottsdale, Arizona, his wife and best friend Jean LeMont of Columbia City, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lorraine Bassine, and an infant grandson.
