September 6, 2002BARRE CITY - Neal Dunham, 80, of 5 Auburn Street passed away Tuesday August 27, 2002 at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin,
Born in St. Johnsbury, Vt. on April 25, 1922 he was the son of Harry and Iva (Sawyer) Dunham.
The family later moved to Wilson, Conn. where he attended schools and was a graduate of Wilson High School, Class of 1940.
He entered the U.S. Army on October 8, 1942 until March 5, 1943. After the service he returned to Conn. where he was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and was also a reserve officer for the Manchester Police Department. He was in the National Guard of Conn. served as Sergeant in the 43rd. Division until Dec. 20, 1953, where he also was a Mounted Police Guard.
On August 1, 1942 he married Lois Elwood in Wilson, Conn. They were married until 1951.
On December 20, 1953 he married Sylvia Marcoux in Hartford, Conn. They came to Barre in 1954. She passed away in 1993. In April of 1994 he married Mildred Beede. She passed away on May 28, 2002.
Neal was employed at Dessureau Machine Shop as a machinist from 1954 until 1962. On April 14, 1962 he joined the Barre Police Dept. where he served as Sergeant and Captain until June 30, 1984 when he retired.
He was a member of the American Legion Post # 10 of Barre.
Survivors are two daughters, Cynthia Decker and her companion Larry Lawyer of Bakersfield, Vt. and Linda Wiley of Hebron, Conn.; one son Richard Lavoie and his wife Josie of Tucson, Arizona; four step-daughters, Jackie Matheson of Graniteville; Paula Casablanca of White Sulphur Springs, N.Y.; Tina Carpenter of Barre and Nancy Baer of East Barre; one step-son Douglas Carpenter of Newport, N.H. He also leaves numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three step-sons, Normand Lavoie, Gerald Lavoie and Gary Carpenter; one son-in-law, Brian Decker.

September 20, 1941South Londonberry - Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the Baptist church for Nelson B. Smith, 63, who died Saturday in Brattleboro Memorial hospital. Rev. Christian Petersen officiated. Burial was in Gleb View cemetery.
Mr. Smith was the senior member of the mill firm, Nelson B. Smith & Sons, here. For many years also he was a road commissioner.
He was born March 11, 1878, in Topsham, one of three children of Oscar and Jane (Randall) Smith.
He married Hattie M. Landsear in Putney Oct. 21, 1903. The couple lived most of their married life in Brookline and South Londonderry.
He was a member of the West River lodge, I.O.O.F., No. 24; Kent Rebekah lodge, and Oasis Encampment.
Surviving him are his wife, four children - Mrs. Margaret Jaquith, Mrs. Lena Slade, Nelson B. Smith and Herbert O. Smith - a half brother, George Griswold of Stratton, and eight grandchildren.
A son and daughter died a number of years ago at ages of 14 and 15, respectively.

February 5, 2005SOUTH LONDONDERRY -- Lena Beatrice Slade, 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Equinox Terrace in Manchester Center.
She was born July 9, 1908, in Brookline, daughter of Nelson B. Smith and Hattie (Landfear) Smith.
She attended schools in South Londonderry.
She married Ora J. Slade on March 20, 1935, in Chester. He predeceased her in 1979 after 44 years of marriage.
She lived most of her life in South Londonderry and was a postal clerk assisting her husband, who was Postmaster. She retired in the 1970s.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in South Londonderry for 50 years and served as assistant treasurer for a number of years. She was also a member of the American Legion and the Home Demonstration Group.
She liked to knit and crochet and enjoyed reading romance novels and working on jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed going out to eat. She was especially fond of flowers and plants.
She is survived by five nieces and three nephews; many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by five siblings, Margaret Jaquith, Ruth Smith, Nelson M. Smith, Robert L. Smith and Herbert O. Smith, all of whom lived in South Londonderry during their lifetimes.

March 23, 1988Ruby Anne Parsons, 88, of Parsons Road died Monday evening at her home. Born in Newfane on March 31, 1899, she was the daughter of George and Mabel (Wiswall) Griswold. She attended schools in Newfane and Whitingham.
On April 26, 1915, she married Hermon Parsons, who died Nov. 8, 1969.
Mrs. Parsons resided in Wilmington all of her married life. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary of Nelson E. Pickwell Post No. 15 in Wilmington and the Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 1034 in Brattleboro. Mrs. Parsons particularly enjoyed her home and family.
Surviving are four sons, Ralph H. and Ernest G. of Brattleboro, Burnerd H. of Wardsboro and Richard E. of Wilmington; three daughters, Verna E. Canedy of Halifax, Agnes M. Pietrunti of Staten Island, N.Y., and Shirley E. Crawford of Wilmington; a brother, Kenneth Griswold of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Lydia Cleveland of Leasburg, Fla.; 24 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.
Several brothers and sisters predeceased her.

A nativr of West Brattleborp, he was the brother of Mrs. Eliza David and Mrs. Lydia Cleveland, both of Bennington.
He was born July 20, 1900 to George and Mabel Griswold and was employed for many years at the Lovejoy Tool Co. in Springfield before retiring in 1965.
In addition to his two sisters in Bennington; he leaves a widow, the former Elizabeth Davis; a son, William of NorthSpringfield; a daughter, Mrs. Byron Parry of Perkinsville; two brothers, Ralph of West Brattleboro and Kenneth of Milton; another sisyer, Mrs. Riby Parsons of Wrst Brattleboro; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

February 2, 1972Daniel E. Davis, Sr., 69, of Woodford, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning at his residence.
He had been employed by Burgess Brothers Inc. since 1968 and previously worked for Burrington Construction and the Draper Corporation.
The son of Charls and Stella (Moon) Davis, he was born in Searsbug Nov. 23, 1902 and received his education in Searsburg schools.
He married the former Eliza Griswold on Jan 20, 1924 in Searsburg and they have always made their home in the Bennington area.
Mr. Davis was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors besides his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Lena Prouty of Bennington; three sons, Albert Davis of Searsburg; Francis of Cheshire, Mass., and Daniel E. Davis, Jr. of White Creek, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Becker of Hoosick, N.Y. and Mrs. Frederick (Gladys) Harrington of Palmer, Mass.; two brothers, Ernest Davis and Cassius Davis both of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

June 27, 1996Mrs. Mildred L. Griswold, age 77, died in the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington Wedmesday afternoon, June 26, 1996 shortly after arrival.
She was born in Highgate, July 25, 1918, daughter of the late Homer and Minnie (Startwell) Burns.
She worked for several families in the Franlin County area and was a former member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Swanton.
Her survivors include her four children, Betty Tippery and Clare Griswold, both of St. Albans, Kenneth E. Griswold Jr. and his wife Patricia of San Antonio, Texas, Homer "Chuck" Griswold and his wife Sandra of Milton; a sister, Hortense Wheeler of Swanton; a brother Ellis Burns of Hartford, Conn.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was predecesed by her husband Kenneth E. Griswold Sr. in 1995.

Lydia Coretta Cleveland, 100, a resident of East Road, passed away May 29, 2018 at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation surrounded by her family.
Lydia was born in Whitingham, VT on April 21, 1918 the daughter of the late George and Mabel Etta (Wiswall) Griswold. She was youngest of 8 children and was 3 years old when her mother died.
She was raised by her adopted parents George and Cora Harris, moving to Vernon, VT where she received her early education at Vernon, VT elementary school, graduated in 1936 from Brattleboro High School and from Concord Memorial School of Nursing, Concord, NH class of 1940. Lydia worked as a Registered Nurse at Putnam Memorial Hospital (now Southwestern Vermont Medical Center)for 29 years retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, MT. Anthony Chapter #1 and later the Red Mountain Chapter #41 in Arlington, VT. Lydia also served as President of the Bennington County Registered Nurses Association for several years. She wintered for 20 years along with her husband in Fruitland Park, Florida where she served as President of the Fruitland Park Home Owners Association planning and organizing several cruises. Prior to settling in Florida, her & Stanley spent many happy times traveling with their camper as members of The Good Sam Camping Club. She enjoyed flowers (raising many African violets), sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, knitting & crocheting afghans, sweaters, scarfs & hats for her family. In Florida she took classes in the craft of Quilling and presented family with many beautiful framed works of art.
Upon moving back to Vermont she lived with her daughter Carol Harrington in Bennington.
Lydia is survived by her children David G. Cleveland and significant other Linda Dahn of Middletown, NY; Joseph A. Cleveland and wife Bonnie of North Richland Hills, TX; Steven G. Cleveland and wife Darlene of Bennington and Carol C.Harrington also of Bennington; grandchildren Lynne and husband Andrew Farrell of Bennington; Frank Harrington and wife Susan of Warrenton, VA; Gregory Cleveland and significant other Melanie Charpentier of Shaftsbury; Brian Cleveland of Loveland,Colorado; Jennifer Broome and husband Michael of Conroe, TX ; Eric Cleveland and wife Diane of Lake Stevens, Washington; Joseph Cleveland Jr and wife Traci of Benbrook, TX ; Julie Roff and husband Paul of Alvarado, TX; Lori Hill and husband John of Sacramento, Calif; Jason and Jared Anderson of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; 23 great grandchildren ; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley G. Cleveland whom she married February 12, 1941 in Concord, NH. Mr. Cleveland died November 25, 1995.
She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law Arnold Harrington (died June 2013).

Mr. Cleveland was a retired machinist for an electrical component company. Born in New Hampshire, he moved to Central Florida in 1980. A member of First Methodist Church of Bennington, Vt., he also belonged to the Mount Anthony Moose Lodge 13 F&AM, Loyal Order of the Moose 1233 Green Mount Shrine Club, Mount Anthony Order of Eastern Star Chapter 1, Cairo Shrine Temple, Lake County Shrine Club and Scottish Rite Consistory. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors: wife, Lydia; sons, David G., Middletown, N.Y., Joseph, Watauga, Texas, Stephen, Bennington; daughter, Carol Ann Harrington, Bennington; brothers, Carl E., Laconia, N.H., Roland M., Novato, Calif.; sisters, Margaret E. January 15, 2000SOUTH LONDONDERRY - John "Jack" Nelson Stevens, 79, died Jan. 13, 2000, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born May 21, 1920, in Worcester, Mass., son of Mae (Moultrop) and John Stevens.
He received his education in the South Londonderry schools and graduated from Leland and Gray Seminary in 1940.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.
He had worked at Smith's Mill in South Londonderry for many years before his retirement in 1985.
He married Shirley E. Rose on Oct. 13, 1945, in Sunderland, Mass.
He was a 50-year member of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the board of directors of the Londonderry Memorial Park, a member of the Londonderry School Board, as well as a member of the First Baptist Church in South Londonderry for many years. He was also a member of the Robert T. Shepardson American Legion Post 82 in Londonderry, Vt., for many years.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed camping very much. Boating was most especially enjoyable to him. In his most recent years, he had spent winters in Florida, where he was involved with the community events as well as spending time boating.
Survivors include two sons, David G. and wife, Margaret Stevens of South Londonderry and Douglas J. and wife, Bonnie Stevens of South Londonderry; four grandchildren; Holly MacGilfrey, and Rebekah, Mark and Erica Stevens; three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Alexia and Brittani MacGilfrey; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley, in 1998; and a sister, Hazel Rose.

Wednesday 15 January 1969Northampton � Jacob J. Englehardt, of 121 Straw Ave., Florence, died Tuesday in Cooley Dickinson Hospital. He was born here, Sept. 7, 1898 and had lived in Hatfield most of his life coming to Northampton about 25 years ago.
He was a World War I Army veteran and had been employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital for many years, retiring in Dec. 1966.
Besides his widow, Mae Randall, he leaves three step-daughters, three brothers, Ruppert, Louis and Theodore, all of Hatfield, and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Hammack of Miami, Fla., two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley Randall, age 96, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away quietly in her home on Feb. 20, 2018.
She was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Helmer and Inez Bjornberg.
She enlisted in the U.S. Navy Waves Reserve in 1945 and received training at Hunter College, New York City, and later at St. Albans Naval Hospital, Long Island, followed by duty at Norfolk Naval Hospital. She married Philip Randall on Sep. 8, 1945, at the Norfolk Naval Chapel in Norfolk, Virginia.
Shirley graduated from Frederick High School in Wisconsin and later earned her Bachelor's degree in home economics education from UW-Stout in Menominee and a Master's degree in clothing and related art with a specialty in textiles at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Her career in teaching home economics began at Grantsburg High School and was followed by Beecher High School, Flint Community College and finally retired from UW-Stevens Point in 1988.
She had many hobbies and was a very active member of the First English Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids. Among her favorite activities, she enjoyed hand quilting, traveling, gardening, Red Hat Club, church activities and especially spending time with family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Michael Randall and Jeff (Marlyce) Randall; her daughter, Mindy (Kevin) Pixler; daughter-in-law, Leslie Randall; sister, Janet Winn; seven grandchildren, April Pixler, Jennifer (Meyer) Lehman, Erin (John Czarnota) Randall, Jill (Jeff) Kersten, Justin (Amanda) Pixler, Brooke (Brandon) Nontelle and Alicia (Jacob) Hutkowski; 11 great-grandchildren, Avery, Emmet and Oren Lehman, Jonathan Czarnota, Cole and Connor Kersten, Ethan Grunden, Dakota Doeller, Mason and Easton Pixler and Brinley Nontelle.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Philip W. Randall; and son, Philip T. Randall.

March 27, 1996William J. Randall Jr., 73, of 297 Roosevelt Ave. died Sunday in Baystate Medical Center.
He was a 38-year bus driver for the former Springfield Street Railway (now the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority), and retired in 1987. Born in Northampton, he was a lifelong resident of this city. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church.
He leaves his wife, the former Anna Beshara; a son, William J. of Springfield; three daughters, Linda A. Tracy of Springfield, Darlene M. Renaud of Palmer, and Lisa M.
