MARY HODGES GRINNELL, age 84, died Feb. 17, at Saline Memorial Hospice.

She was born in Little Rock, Ark., on Oct. 19, 1927, to the late Ligon and Mary Dodge Hodges.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Beall Grinnell.

Mary is survived by: a daughter, Mary Eleanor Grinnell, of Ft. Bragg, Calif.; close cousins, Leila Springer (Scott); and children, Jackson and Nell and Kirk Dodge all of Memphis, Tenn., Mary Lou Crane and Lila Sue Romeo of San Marino, Calif.; and many life-long friends.

Mary, popularly known as "Babe," received a BA degree in education from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Women's University, and a MA from Arkansas State Teachers' College, now UCA. She began her teaching career as a first grade teacher in Marlin, Texas, before returning to Little Rock to teach in the Little Rock public schools.

Mary was the founding principal of The Cathedral School, as well as the first grade teacher, until she and her husband moved to St. Louis, Mo., where she began as a kindergarten teacher at a public elementary school in University City. After both retired, they returned to Little Rock where she became active in the St. Vincent's Hospital Auxiliary, receiving one of the honorary outstanding volunteer awards, the Retired Teachers' Association, a Little Rock Garden Club, and Cathedral church activities.

Mary loved music and always had season tickets to the symphony. She was an avid gardener and was a member of several bridge clubs.

STUART - Shirley A. Stanlik, 79, of Stuart died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at her home.

She was a native of Burlington, Iowa.

She was a unit supervisor at McHenry (Ill.) Hospital for 15 years.

She was a member of Peace Presbyterian Church, Stuart.

She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, animals, cooking and reading.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Stanlik, on April 6, 1987.

Survivors include a son, Bill Stanlik and wife Sherry of Fremont, Wis.; and a sister, Carol Mark of Burlington.

44643. Paul Eugene Ebert

Paul Eugene Ebert, the son of Albert W. and Ella Haskell Ebert, was born in Burlington on 26 September 1917.

Paul graduated from Burlington High School with the Class of 1936.

On 25 June 1941, Paul married the former Lois Anne Nau (Class of 1938), daughter of Dale Lester and Helen J. Kellar Nau, at First Methodist Church in a 2:00 p.m. ceremony. Paul and Lois lived in Indiana Harbor, Indiana after their wedding until the first of September when they moved to their new home in Hammond, Indiana. From this marriage they had one son, Thomas Paul.

A graduate of Coyne Electrical Trade School in Chicago, Paul worked for Inland Steel Mills in Indiana Harbor.

Paul enlisted in the United States Army on 12 February 1943 for the duration of the war. While assigned to Headquarters Detachment, 9th Troop Carrier Command (Pathfinder) Group in early 1945, Paul became ill and was eventually hospitalized on 9 March 1945 in Paris, France. On 12 May Paul was brought back to the United States and admitted to the U. S. Army Air Force Hospital at Fort Logan, Colorado, where he died on 10 July 1945 from bacterial endocarditic (inflammation of the inner lining of the heart).

Paul was survived by his wife, son, and father.

Sergeant Paul Eugene Ebert, United States Army Air Force, was buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery (Block 275A, Lot 14, Grave 6) on 13 July 1945.

Born Sept. 9, 1925, near Burlington, he was the son of Walter Harrison Sr. and Florence Ida Haskell Miller. On June 19, 1949, he married Wanda Helphrey in Winfield.

Mr. Miller was a farmer.

He was raised near Burlington and moved with his family to Pleasant Lawn in 1941 and was a graduate of Pleasant Lawn High School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Evening Rotary Club, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was a 50-year member of the New London Masonic Lodge No. 28. He served on the Pleasant Lawn School Board and served as a board director for Mount Union Co-op Elevator, Production Credit Association of Mount Pleasant, FMHA, Farm Bureau and Hope Haven Development Corp. of Burlington.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Patricia Coe of Mount Pleasant, Joan Padley of Marion and Teresa Miller of Burlington; one son, Jim Miller of Scott City, Kan.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.


Wanda Frances Helphrey

Wanda F. Miller, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at Savannah Heights in Mt. Pleasant.

Born October 23, 1928, in rural Mt. Union, IA, Wanda Frances was the daughter of James W and Iva (Reid) Helphrey.

She grew up in the Mt. Union area and was a 1945 graduate of Mt. Union High School. Wanda attended Iowa Wesleyan College obtaining a teaching certificate, which she used to teach third grade in Keota, IA.

On June 19, 1949, Wanda married Walter Harrison Miller, Jr. in Winfield, IA. He preceded her in death on August 26, 2003.

After Wanda's marriage, she joined her husband in farming in the Pleasant Lawn area until moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1996. A member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, where she was active in U.M.W., Wanda served on various committees and boards. She made baptismal banners for the church since 1988. She enjoyed playing Bridge, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, along with do crocheting and needle work.

With a community spirit and dedication to many organizations in the community, Wanda was a member of many social and civic organizations, some of which included P.E.O. Chapter OX, T.T.T., Tuesday Study Club, and Westside Mother's Club. She was also a member of San Souci, volunteered at Henry County Health Center through R.S.V.P., and was a past member of Eastern Star.

Wanda is survived by four children, Patricia (Aaron) Coe of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Joan (Tom) Padley of Marion, IA, Teresa Miller of Burlington, IA, and James (Carmen) Miller of Scott City, KS; five grandchildren, Katie Padley-Bolo, Melinda Padley-Jones, Allison (Elad) Padley-Shapira, Cacee (Trevor) Cox , and Guy (Jessi) Miller; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her loving husband, Walter, Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Virginia Riepe; and a brother, Robert Helphrey.

Jack C. Haskell, 88, of Chesapeake, Va., died Friday, March 2, 2012.

Mr. Haskell served 27 years in the Navy and earned a Bronze Star, and Navy Occupation, American Campaign and Asian-Pacific Campaign medals. He also received a certificate of appreciation signed by President Richard M. Nixon. He was the first chief at Fleet Works Study Group Atlantic to make the new senior chief rating in December 1960 and visited the Pentagon with an admiral. He achieved the rank of master chief, one of the youngest at the time. He also shook hands with President Lyndon B. Johnson while he boarded the USS Northampton.

Survivors include his wife, June E. Haskell; three sons, Jack Haskell of Parsippany N.J., Michael Haskell of Suffolk Va., and William Haskell of Virginia Beach, Va.; two daughters, Terry Robinson of Lusby, Md., and Kathy Bryan of Chesapeake; one brother, Paul Haskell of Springville, Va.; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Chesapeake - June E. Haskell, 93, passed away July 7, 2017 surrounded by her loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, BTMC Jack Charles Haskell, eight siblings; Helen, Minnie, Opal, Ruth, Elsie, Hank, Keith, Wilbur, and her parents Lee Thomas and Myrtle Cole.

She is survived by five children; Jack Haskell of NJ, Mike Haskell (Vivian) of NC, Bill Haskell (Sherry) of VA, Terry Robinson (Rick) of MD, Kathy Bryan (Howie) of VA, brother-in-law Paul Haskell of IA, sister-in-law Lois Dye of IA, and many nieces and nephews. She had ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren whom she loved dearly.

She loved Elvis, country & western music, reading, old jewelry, collectable dolls and old movies. She was an avid Duke Men's Basketball fan and a Washington Nationals fan and rarely missed a game. When she wasn't watching her favorite sports (and yelling at the TV screen), she was always ready to play a competitive game of Rummy. She was tough, surviving cancer and a heart attack many years ago. After the passing of her husband, June lived with her daughters Terry and Kathy, sharing her time between MD and VA. She spent her last few weeks in MD under the care of her granddaughter Rhoda Robinson of AZ. She was the Matriarch of the family and will be greatly missed.

Her ashes will rest alongside her beloved husband Jack at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

Marjorie Ella Capps, 84, of Burlington, died at 4:45 AM Saturday, May 29, 2010, at her home in Burlington.

Born January 28, 1926, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Jack William and Frances A. Haugh Haskell. On September 8, 1945, she married Arnold Clark in Galesburg They later divorced. She then married Richard Capps on November 26, 1953 in New London, MO. They later divorced.

Marjorie worked for the Arion, and worked at several other bars in the area. She also worked as both a supervisor and an associate for the Burlington School District for 29 years, she retired in 2004. More recently, she worked at Catfish Bend for three years as a security guard. She was a graduate of Burlington High School. She is of the Catholic faith. She was a member of both the Eagles Club and AARP. She enjoyed working with the students and the public and being with her family and her dog (Sam). She liked animals and was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald W. (Mary) Clark of Colfax, IA, James "Jim" D. (Jackie) Capps of Burlington; three daughters, Marjean S. (Mike) Vorwerk of Gladstone, IL, Cyndi A. Eipert of Aberdeen, WA, and Mary Lou Capps of Burlington; eleven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Jack C. (June) Haskell of St. Cloud, FL, and Paul W. Haskell of Springville, IA; and eight nieces and seven nephews. She was preceeded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother and one grandaughter.

Robert L. Haskell, 79, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at Northbrook Manor Care Center, Cedar Rapids, where he had been a resident since July 7.

Survivors include his wife, Lois (Dye) Haskell; his daughters, Elaine Daughtery of Port Byron, Ill., Deborah Robinson and Betty Usher, both of Bellevue, Neb., and Roberta (Dean) Drahos of Winter Haven, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Melinda Dye of Charlotte, Iowa; and a stepson, Keith Dye (Rhonda) of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jeremy Usher, Darrell Daughtery Jr., Katelyn Dye and Thomas Dye; and his beloved Australian Shepard, Lil Guy. Also surviving are two brothers, Jack (June) of St. Cloud, Fla., and Paul of Springville; a sister, Marjorie of Burlington; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty.

Robert was born March 3, 1929, the son of Jack William and Frances A. (Haugh) Haskell. He grew up on a farm near Burlington, where he developed his love of horses. Robert served in the U.S. Army, 7th Infantry Engineer Battalion, from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean conflict. He moved to the Springville area in 1955 and worked at Rockwell Collins for 29 years as a repair operator on Line 6. Robert married Lois (Dye) Haskell on Sept. 24, 1994. He was previously active in the Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association, Broken Bit Saddle Club and a member of American Legion Post 298. Bob will be lovingly remembered for his love of horses, fishing, boating, dancing, bright-colored hats, fancy western shirts and country music.
