Emily P. Haskell died 9 June 1992, aged 78, in Woodbridge, Virginia. Until 1987 a lifelong resident of Brunswick, Maine, she taught school for 19 years.

She was survived by daughter Alice Hughes of Lorton, Virginia, and son Randall Haskell of Waldwick, New Jersey, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Randall was the Master of the Texas Liberty Ship, SS Filipi De Bastrop in WWII. The ship was built in Houston in 1943 or 1944 and is now a part of the atrificial reef in Tampa Florida.

We regret to report the passing of Theron A. "Ted" Pickering, 85, at Deer Isle, Maine, USA, 8 November 2005.

Son of Ernest H. and Cora (Bray) Pickering, he served as yachtsman before the war. In 1943 he joined the US Navy, serving in the amphibious forces in the Pacific where he participated in six assault landings on enemy held beaches. Following the war, he was employed by the New England Telephone Company until retirement in 1982.

Predeceasing him were his sister Emily Pickering and her husband Captain Randall E. Haskell. Survivors include nephew Randall J. Haskell, wife, Sandra and their children, Russell and Scott.

Fern Garlock

Mrs Fern Garlock Haskell died at St. Michael's hospital, Grand Forks, Dec. 26, 1971.

She was born in Bemidji June 17, 1911, the daughter of the late Dr and Mrs. A.V. Garlock. She graduated from a five-year nursing course at the University of Minnesota and was an educational and nursing instructor at the Lawrence North Memorial hospital in 1938 at New London. Conn.

Her late husband, Edward Y. Haskell was in the insurance business at Harrisburg, Pa. before entering the Merchant Marines. While he was in the service. Mrs. Haskell and son came to Bemidji to live and Mrs Haskell became the first educational director and supervisor of cadet nurses at the Bemidji Lutheran hospital.

After Mr Haskell's return from the service, the family moved to Grand Forks.

She is survived by her son, Edward Y Haskell of Grand Forks and a brother, Robert Garlock of Bemidji.

DEER ISLE and ROCKLAND '96 Edna F. Hardy, 84, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at a Deer Isle healthcare facility. She was born April 14, 1920, in Deer Isle, the daughter of Sterling and Alice (Dodge) Stinson.

Edna was educated in Deer Isle schools and raised her family there, before moving to the Rockland area. She worked as a CNA in a Camden Nursing Home for a few years, and then worked as a seamstress for Amalgamated Cotton Textiles at Van Balens in Rockland for 25 years. During her semi retired years, Edna did housekeeping for others on a part time basis. She enjoyed crafts, dancing, sewing, and yard sales.

Edna is survived by two sons, Elwood "Sam" Hardy and his wife, Judy, and Douglas Hardy Sr. and his wife, Ruth, all of Deer Isle; a sister, Elizabeth Stinson Knight of Ohio; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-stepgrandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Marjorie Stinson Dunham, Chester Stinson, and Laura Stinson Eaton; and a grandson, Daniel D. Hardy.

DEER ISLE   Elwood "Sam" E. Hardy, 68, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 23, 2008, at his residence. He was born June 10, 1939, in Stonington, the son of the late Granville and Edna (Stinson) Hardy.

Sam worked for a few years at Crotch Island Quarry. He worked for more than 40 years of his life as a self-employed contractor.

He is survived by his wife, Judith May (Barbour) Hardy; a son, Sammy Scott Hardy, both of Deer Isle; a granddaughter, Stormi Gayle Hardy of Stonington; a brother, Douglas A. Hardy of Deer Isle; an aunt, Leonora "Tottie" Billings; many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Sam was predeceased by a nephew, Danny D. Hardy.

Marguerite Whiffen, 68, died Monday at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a long illness.

She was born at Blue Hill, a daughter of Frank and Carrie Haskell Hardy, and attended Deer Isle schools.

For many years, Mrs. Whiffen worked on the SAD 5 school lunch program.

She attended the Rockland Congregational Church.

Surviving are her husband, Ronald P. Whiffen; a daughter, Cindy Bertrand of Mansfield, Mass.; a sister, Lenora Billings of Deer Isle; three brothers, Emery and Roger Hardy, both of Deer Isle, and Phil Hardy of Houlton; and three grandchildren.

NORTH EASTON, MASSACHUSETTS '96 Ronald P. Whiffen, Jr., 72, formerly of Cedar Street, Rockland, Maine, died early Sunday, November 23, 2003 at North Easton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after an extended illness. Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, March 16, 1931, he was the son of Ronald P. and Eleanor Weiderman Whiffen. He attended Gloucester schools thru his senior year when he moved with his family to Rockland. He graduated from Rockland High School, class of 1949.

In July of 1955, he married Marguerite Hardy in Rockland. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to 1953. Returning to civilian life, Mr. Whiffen returned to commercial fishing, a trade he learned from his father. He ultimately spent his working career, captaining commercial fishing vessels out of Rockland. He first worked at Forty Fathoms and later F.J. O'Hara and Sons, from which he retired in the early 1980's.

Mr. Whiffen was pre-deceased by his wife in 1995 and a brother Edward in 2002. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Bertrand and her husband David of Mansfield, Massachusetts; a brother Frank Whiffen and his wife Cheryl of Spring Hill, Florida; a sister Frances Pedersen and her husband Arnold of Pawhatan, Virginia; a sister-in-law Grace Whiffen of Rockland; three grandchildren, Leanne, Michael and Paul Bertrand as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was a homemaker.

Mr. Weatherford died Thursday, Jan. 12, 1995, at his residence. Born Oct. 5, 1916, in Paducah, Ky., he moved to Shasta County in 1979 from Riverside. He was a police officer in Burbank and retired as a lieutenant.

Shirley Rae Baloun, 58, of Groveland died Sunday at her home.

Mrs. Baloun was a native of Illinois. She lived in Groveland nine years and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence Baloun of Groveland; children, John Winn of Jamestown, Floyd Buchan of Castaic and Dennis McIntyre of Alta Loma; stepchildren, Ron Baloun, Mitch Baloun, Renee Baloun and Rachelle Baloun, all of California; brothers, James Weatherford of Oregon and Terry Weatherford of Monrovia; and sisters, Donna Fletcher of Fillmore, Linda Manfull of Oregon and Cindy Hansen of Redding.

Clarence Baloun

Clarence Baloun, a former resident of Tuolumne County, died of natural causes on October 26, 2015, at the Loma Linda University Medical Center in Southern California. He was 81 years old.

Clarence was a Fireman-Engineer for the City of Downey for 24 years. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1956. His home was in Lake Forest, CA for the last 10 years of his life.

Clarence was a member of the Catholic Church in Groveland and the California Fireman's Association. He loved woodworking, camping and outdoor activities and watching western movies (especially John Wayne movies). He especially enjoyed being at family get-togethers.

Clarence is survived by his children: sons Ronald Baloun of Menifee and Mitch Baloun of Lake Forest; daughters Renee Pietrok of Yorba Linda and Rochelle Corlett of Thousand Oaks; along with 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Clarence is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Rae Baloun.

Mr. Pastoret died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Redding Medical Center. Born Nov. 7, 1937, in Duluth, Minn., he moved to Shasta County in 1969.

He owned and operated Aladdin Welding in Redding, and was a member of the Redding Moose Lodge and Palo Cedro Golf Course.

Survivors include wife Iva; five children; five stepchildren; and many grandchildren.

HUNTLEY - Karen L. Blaney, 66, of Huntley, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012. She was born Dec. 20, 1945, in Chicago, the daughter of James and Mildred (Haskell) Toal.

Karen loved traveling, especially to Aruba, until her heath declined. She was very fortunate to receive a double lung transplant that enabled her to live 10 additional years with her loving family. She truly enjoyed watching her favorite TV programs and visiting. Through it all, her family was by her side and she dearly loved spending time with them.

She is survived by her beloved children, Kimberly Jaminski and Mark Blaney; loving granddaughter, Karly Blaney; stepfather, Frank Campanile; dear brother, Jim Toal; special friend and father to her children, William "Billie" Blaney; special cousin and caregiver, John Toal; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Frank Toal.

WEST FRANKFORT -- Dora P. Dugger, 76, of Westfield, Ind., formerly of West Frankfort, departed this life Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Westfield, after a long illness.

She was born July 14, 1926, in West Frankfort, a daughter of George and Maggie Wesson Haskell.

Dora was a graduate of Frankfort Community High School, class of 1943.

After high school, she worked at Bendix Corp. in Chicago, making parts for airplanes during World War II. She was a "Rosie the Riveter" gal. She was a cook at Pickett's Cafeteria in Westfield for 20 years before retirement.

She attended Sheridan Bible Church in Sheridan, Ind. Dora married Ellis Wayne Dugger on Dec. 27, 1944. There were married until 1996 and had six children.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Trudy and Jerry McMullan and Cynthia and Mark Holliday, all of Westfield, Ind.; four sons, Larry Dugger and Timothy E. Dugger, both of Westfield, David L. Dugger of Indianapolis, Ind., and Richard A. Dugger of Frankfort, Ind.; two sisters, Marie Crowell of Champaign and Jean Rae Winget of Evansville, Ind.; a brother, C. Edward Haskell of Addison; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She was affectionately known as "Grammie Dorie" and loved very much by them. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and six sisters.

He was a coal miner and iron worker. He was a member of the American Legion Post 389 and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Zeigler, IL. He served in World War II.

Survivors include one daughter, Lynn Zimmerman of Fort Lauderdale, FL.; one brother, Bill Kelley of West Frankfort, IL.; two sisters, Margaret Hemphill of West Frankfort and Mildred Sticklus of Chicago, IL.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, Paul and one infant sister, Ruth.

CHAMPAIGN   Marie JoAnne Crowell, 83, of Champaign passed away peacefully on Friday evening (March 18, 2016).

The eighth child of George and Maggie Haskell, JoAnne was born on Sept. 1, 1932, in West Frankfort, Ill. Joanne married Gene Crowell on Nov. 26, 1955.

A dedicated and loving wife and mother, she and Gene have three children, Nancy (Kent Hawthorne), Tami (Ron Schnorf) and Danny (Linda); and five grandchildren, Ambar, Tina, Curtis, Courtney and Sara.

JoAnne is preceded in death by her husband, Gene, and 10 siblings. Whether you know her as "JoAnne" or "Marie," you know that she was an incredibly strong and generous woman with a fierce and compassionate love for her family and friends. Her love was truly unconditional; she loved us to our core.
