October 23, 2002BULLHEAD CITY -- Longtime Bullhead City Fire Board member Jack Newby died Tuesday night. He had been in ill health for several months.
According to Larry Tunforss, public information officer for the Bullhead City Fire Department, just last week members of the department held a luncheon for him at the fire station.
"We knew he was not going to re-run for the board position which is up at the end of the year," Tunforss said. "It was kind of a retirement party for him from the fire board, which he served on since citizens of the fire district voted for a five member board in November 1989."
When Newby came to Bullhead City, he had been a volunteer firefighter in Watsonville, Calif., for 40 years.
In the state of Arizona, he was well known through the entire state because of his membership with the Arizona Fire Districts Association (AFDA).
According to Tunforss, the AFDA holds two conferences a year and Newby attended all of them. New board members from throughout Arizona would go to him for advice and respected his opinion.
While on the Bullhead City Fire Board, he served as chairman for two years, and has been the secretary for the last six years.
"Jack got on the fire board because of his desire for fire station three on McCormick," Tunforss said. "He was instrumental in bringing that fire station into existence. During his term, he was very supportive and saw stations five and six added to the Bullhead City Fire Department."
"Jack was a loyal and dedicated fire board member since the boards inception," Bullhead City Fire Chief Rick Southey said. "His expertise and compassion for the community will be greatly missed."
According to retired Fire Chief Bill Wagner, Newby was a great friend
"Besides his family, he enjoyed a great cigar, a good game of golf and the Bullhead City Fire Department. He was a great, upstanding gentleman who served this community without compensation from 1989 until Tuesday."
Fire board chairman Alan Carlson remarked that Newby's "prior firefighter service and knowledge was instrumental in keeping Bullhead City Fire Department at the forefront of the fire service in Arizona."
Newby is survived by his wife Nita, and two children, son Jack Jr. and daughter Jamie.
