73539. Ralph Everett Howe

Ralph E. Howe, 79, of 1 Sycamore St., Hudson, died Saturday evening, Oct. 4, 1997, at home.

Mr. Howe had worked for the Federal Aviation Administration Center as an air traffic controller and retired from the FAA as a supervisor after working there for 36 years.

He was also a member of the CCC.

Mr. Howe served in the Marines as a radioman in China, prior to World War II.

He had been a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church since 1963.

He was known to be a hunting and fishing enthusiast. He also enjoyed traveling to the St. Petersburg, Fla., area with his wife during the winter months.

Mr. Howe was born in Lynn, Mass., on Oct. 12, 1917, son of the late Percivel and Suzanne (Schneider) Howe.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen (Daisey) Howe of Hudson three sons, Ralph Howe of Litchfield, Stephen Howe of Virginia Beach, Va., and David C. Howe of Hudson a brother, Robert Howe of Lynn five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.


Frank C. Davis

Frank C. Davis, aged 53, who had laterly lived with his daughter at Winthrop, Mass, committed suicide Tuesday afternoon a the jail by hanging himself from a door. The act was committed between 2 and 3 o'clock, during the absence of the Turkey Beverly S McGaughey at the station, whither he went for a prisoner, Oscar Santos of Newmarket, committed for stabbing Emmnuel Silver, a fellow Portuguese.

It need not be stated that Mr. McGaughey and his prisoner were startled at entrance to the corridor Santos was hurriedly placed in a cell and the officer then cut down the body, but life had sped. Santos, thinking the hanging an act of punishment and further frightened by the officer's knife, was literally terror-stricken. For hours he lay with face covered.

Davis came last Saturday evening to the home of his father-in-law, Edward Nichols, High Street. Sunday morning, in sudden frenzy, he seized a hammer and dealt three blows at William Foss, of Lynn, Mass.. Mrs. Nichols' brother-in-law, who was lying upon a lounge. Fortunately a chair before the lounge broke the force of the blows and Mr. Foss was not badly injured.

Davis was arraigned in police court Monday for assault with intent to kill and committed to jail. For four years he had suffered from locomotor ataxia, which doubtless affected his mind.

He was born in Newfield, Maine and was a carpenter. Besides the widow he leaves, in Winthrop, a daughter by a former marriage.


73555. Howard I. Ross

Howard I. Ross died on Aug. 12, 2009, of cardiac arrest. He was 97. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith, who died in 2005.

Born in 1911, in Ipswich, Mass., to Herbert and Bessie Ross, he was the oldest of six children.

In his teen years he worked at Myopia Hunt Club in Wenham, Mass., training and caring for horses. He then worked as a veterinarian's assistant to Dr. Horace Lambert in Beverly, Mass., and did carpentry work at wealthy estates around Beverly's North Shore. Not one to retire, he handcrafted fireplace bellows, which turned into a full-time business for him and his wife, Edith.

In 1974, he and Edith moved to California to be closer to family. He took a part-time job as a crossing guard at West Davis Elementary School (now César Chávez). For 16 years, he enjoyed the children and parents there. During this time, he built numerous cubbies, bookshelves, storage and file boxes, coat racks and various other projects requested by the staff. He also built equipment for other Davis schools and some in Sacramento.

He is survived by his son, Howard K. Ross and his wife, Margaret, of Chirton, Wiltshire, England, and his daughter, Judith Schmatjen and her husband, David, of Davis. He regularly received letters and visits from his six grandchildren and even got to enjoy his five great-grandchildren in recent months.

He is further survived by three sisters in Massachusetts: Elizabeth Atherley and Helen Hulbert of Ipswich, and Jennie Cronin of Hamilton. Two other sisters, Bessie Wood and Bertha Smith, have passed away.


Edith Keene Dolliver

Edith Keene Ross died at Sierra Convalescent Hospital in Davis on May 7, 2005, of pneumonia. She was 92. She formerly was a resident of the Memory House in Davis.

A family graveside service will take place in June.

Born Dec. 10, 1912, in Beverly, Mass., to Amos and Annie Dolliver, she was the oldest of six children. She and her husband moved to Davis 30 years ago to be closer to family.

She was a member of the Women's Organization at Davis Community Church and taught Sunday School. Because of her love of children, she provided day care for dozens of families in her lifetime, both in Massachusetts and California.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Howard I. Ross of Davis; her son, Howard K. Ross and his wife Margaret of Chirton, Wiltshire, England; and her daughter, Judith Schmatjen and husband David of Davis.

She is further survived by her brother, Amos Dolliver of Pueblo West, Colo.; her sister, Amy McRae of Wenham, Mass.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hamilton � Jennie M Cronin, 89, a lifetime resident of Hamilton and wife of Robert H. Cronin, Sr. passed away on June 7, after an extended illness.

She owned "Antiques and Elderly Things" in Essex for over 25 years. Her love for antiques was only eclipsed by her love of gardening and bird watching.

For many years she was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Hamilton.

In addition to her husband of 68 years, she is survived by her son, Donald M Cronin of Danvers; a daughter, Rebecca A (Cronin) Wingate of Hawaii; and a grandson, Daniel M Cronin of New Hampshire. She was predeceased by a son, Robert H Cronin Jr., formerly of Lynn, and one brother, and four sisters.


George A. Hulbert

George A. "Al" Hulbert, 82, of Ipswich, husband of Helen I. (Ross) Hulbert, died April 12, 2008 at Beverly Hospital following his unexpected illness.

Born in Ipswich January 7, 1926, son of the late Walter H. and Gladys (May) Hulbert, he was raised in Ipswich and was a 1944 graduate of Ipswich public schools.

During World War II, Mr. Hulbert served in the Navy as an aerial photographer. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Ipswich, and for the next eight years he was employed as a brakeman with the Boston & Maine Railroad. For the next 18 years, he served as a fireman with Ipswich Fire Department. He retired in 1977 and relocated to Punta Gorda, Fla.

In the late 1940s, Mr. Hulbert raced stock cars at the West Peabody Speedway under the name of "Al May." He was an avid NASCAR race fan, enjoyed collecting antique autos and loved boating and fishing in the local waters. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 80 of Ipswich and was a former member of the John T. Heard Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Ipswich.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by a son, Chuck Hulbert and his wife, Marlene, of Ipswich; a daughter, Sally Arledge, and her husband, Wesley Pierce of Salem and Samantha, Cody and Jaclyn Hulbert; a sister, Elizabeth Hulbert; and a nephew, Doug Hulbert, all of Ipswich.

He was the father of the late Susan Hulbert, formerly of Ipswich.

Edith MacMath died peacefully at age 87 on July 10, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.

"Edie" was born Grace Edith Lord on February 17, 1924, in Malden, Massachusetts, to Grace Edith McMullen and Harry Holmes Lord.

She was married in 1948 to Thomas Austin MacMath and they had four children.

The MacMath family has lived in West Bloomfield since 1963.

"Edie" is predeceased by her husband, Thomas, and her brothers Harry Lord Jr. and Charles Lord.

She is survived by her four children: Patricia MacMath Jarden, Rchard MacMath, Dennis MacMath, Barbara MacMath Young, their spouses, Richards Jarden, Jacqueline Woolley, Gregory Young; and five grandchildren: Ryan Young, Courtney Young, Liam Woolley-MacMath, Jessie Woolley-MacMath, Kipp Jarden, and step-granddaughter Natalia Jarden.

Funeral Services were held at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd. Farmington Hills. Interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
