73401. Donald McMillan Haskell
The Astorian
October 23, 2024Don Haskell should not slip away unnoticed. Haskell, who died Oct. 16 at the age of 92, was one of the most interesting characters in one of Astoria's most productive decades.
He played a little-known role in the very beginnings of the restoration of the Liberty Theatre. He was an early member of the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners under its new home rule charter, and one of few commissioners who understood their role. From his experience as a Chicago corporate lawyer, Haskell knew the difference between making policy and micromanagement.
In its earliest days, the nonprofit Liberty Restoration Inc. needed a feasibility study in order to apply for grants. But it lacked the funds to pay for such a study. Haskell, who was a member of the regional strategies board, wired the process to give the Liberty group a grant to do the work.
Through his marriage to Carol Ross, Haskell was related to a broad swath of old Astoria. Through investments started while still in Chicago, he was one of the town's major landlords until he sold his properties to Sean Fitzpatrick, who is now the mayor.
Though some friends wondered over his strongly held belief that the 2020 presidential election result was the product of a wicked cabal of conspirators, he remained bright and engaged throughout his long life. In addition to politics, he was interested in everything from classic cars to the singularity. Driving his perfect Jaguar, he and Carol often zoomed straight through from Astoria to San Francisco, where the Mayo Clinic tended to their health care.
Maritime history was one of Haskell's abiding interests, long serving on the Columbia River Maritime Museum's well-endowed board of directors, whose wealth and great connections play a significant role in that institution's sound finances and lofty ambitions. He was a neighbor to the museum for many years at his office in the former Wecoma Partners overwater building, now home to the Columbia River Bar Pilots.
His magnificent cabin cruiser, which longtime residents may recall tied up in the West Mooring Basin, was one of his most personal connections to Pacific Northwest waters. Whether puttering around the Columbia estuary or navigating the Inside Passage, Haskell was an accomplished skipper, with intrepid Carol handling the lines wherever they docked.
Throughout his long and rather astonishing contest with cancer, he remained fit and resolute no doubt partly thanks to countless hours in the Astoria Aquatic Center. At 80, he was in better physical shape than many men half his age. He was shooting for 100, and gave its attainment a good shot. His activity even extended to carpentry; no dinner guest could fail to be wowed by his personally crafted hardwood paneling.
Perhaps best of all, Haskell was good at forging and maintaining friendships, reaching across generations to take an interest in a broad cross section of society. In what may inelegantly be described as a coffee klatch or more grandiosely as a leadership forum, he and others including former Mayor Willis Van Dusen regularly met to discuss local public policy and every other subject of interest.
His loss subtracts a brilliant legal and philosophical mind from discussions here on the coast.
