March 15, 1994Albert "Hap" Haskell died dancing, just the way he would have wanted it, said the former Beaumont mayor's wife, Barbara. The 84-year-old was square dancing at the Beaumont Women's Club Friday when he had a heart attack. He died at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning. Said family friend Lyle Millage: "If he'd had a choice, that probably would have been his choice to go that way." "The first thing I thought was, that's what he would've wanted," said another friend, Lora Lee Barrett. Friends remembered Mr. Haskell yesterday as a positive, happy person who loved to dance.
For four years, he shared his views with the community in his weekly column, "As I See It," which ran in the Community Advisor newspaper. Editor Hal Lowe said Mr. Haskell wrote "about the local scene from sort of an old-timer's standpoint." Mr. Haskell took a break from his writing last fall so he could travel. He was getting ready to start writing again. "He always had an opinion on everything," said Community Advisor Publisher Ken Smith.
"He was always involved with community affairs to try to make the community better," Smith said.Mr. Haskell especially loved to dance. Mr. Haskell and Barbara Haskell belonged to several square dance clubs. He was past president of the Pass Squares and a member of Sunkist Squares in Redlands. Over the years he had belonged to other clubs no longer in existence, such as the Double B's Square Dance Club and the Bavarian Squares, once based in Beaumont. He also was a member of the Cow Counties Hoedown Association, for which he served as a district director and insurance chairman. "That's the main thing I remember about him was the square dancing, and always with a smile, always with a hug," Barrett said.
Barrett last saw that smile in January at the Haskells' 50th wedding anniversary party at the Beaumont Women's Club. The Haskells renewed their wedding vows, then celebrated with a day spent with friends. "They danced all afternoon long," Barrett remembered.
Mr. Haskell was born in Auburn, Maine. When he was three, his family moved to Raton, N.M., where Mr. Haskell grew up and graduated from high school.He moved to Beaumont in 1958. Mr. Haskell served as a Beaumont city councilman from 1963 through 1968 and as mayor from 1969 until 1976.
He owned and operated a restaurant called the Snack Shack in Beaumont for five years and owned Haskell's Real Estate from 1966 until 1981. He was a member of the Banning-Beaumont-Cherry Valley Board of Realtors. He served as president of that organization in 1975, and in 1989 was honored with their Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1973 Mr. Haskell received an honorary lifetime membership in the California Association of Realtors.
Mr. Haskell was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Desert Edge Post 4417 in Banning.
He was president of the Cherry Festival Committee in 1983 and chairman of the Cherry Festival Pancake Breakfast in 1984. In 1988 he earned the Honored Citizen Award. He also was the 1984-85 president of the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital board of directors. He also had held offices with the Exchange Club. He was a longtime member of the Beaumont Church of Religious Science Chapel By The Park in Beaumont and had been elected recently to chair the board of directors for the church.
Mr. Haskell is survived by his wife; two daughters, Nancy Obleman of Bellflower and Carrie Masters of Beaumont; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Harriet Bristow of Cherry Valley.

April 29, 2008LEWISTON - Donald C. Haskell, 89, died peacefully April 22, at St. Mary's Hospital.
He was born in Auburn, July 9, 1918, the son of Henry I. and Anna C. Haskell. He attended schools in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1937.
He went on to college at Wentworth Institute in Boston, and then returned home to work at the Continental Mill, until it closed in the early 1960s. On Nov. 15, 1941, he married Laura A. Perkins of Auburn and had two children, Bruce and Richard.
Upon retiring in May 1981 from the L-A Sewerage Treatment Facility, where he was superintendent of maintenance, he and his wife became snowbirds and wintered at Brittany Estates in Leesburg, Fla., and summered at their family cottage at Orr's Island.
He loved all sports, especially skiing and sailing and enjoyed participating as well as being a spectator. He was an avid self-taught sailor who designed and built two of the many sailboats he owned over his life time.
He was a founding member of the Orr's Bailey Yacht Club and was actively involved in sailboat racing in the Casco Bay area for many years.
In his later years with failing health, he and his wife moved back to Auburn and lived at Schooner Estates, where he continued his love for sports, but now only as a spectator.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Laura; two sons, Bruce C. Haskell and his wife, Dona, of Auburn and Richard D. Haskell and his wife, Sandra, of Farmington and Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Michael S. Haskell of Falmouth, Kerri Anne Perron of Sabattus and Maren Haskell of Franklin, N.J.; and six great-grandchildren.

March 18, 2014AUBURN Laura Perkins Haskell, 93, passed away Friday, March 14, at Androscoggin Hospice with her son at her side.
She was born in Auburn on Dec. 21, 1920, to Edwin and Gertrude Perkins, and graduated from Edward Little High School. She married Donald C. Haskell on Nov. 15, 1941, and they spent 63 years together until his death in 2008.
Her greatest loves were her children and grandchildren, and the times spent at the family cottage on Orrs Island. She was employed by the Auburn Water and Sewerage District for many years. After her retirement, Laura and Don became snowbirds and spent 20 winters in Leesburg, Fla. Always a sports fan, she enjoyed watching baseball and basketball games, attending her last game at the age of 92.
Laura leaves behind her son, Bruce and daughter-in-law, Dona; son, Richard and daughter-in-law, Sandy; and three grandchildren, Michael and wife, Judy, KerriAnne and husband, Joe Perron, and Maren Haskell and fiancé, Sebastian Monte.
She was predeceased by her sister, Edwina Upham; brothers, Ervin and Dwight Perkins; and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Haskell.

August 27, 1997David M. Haskell, 73, well-known area educator, died Monday at Caribou.
He was born in Auburn on March 24, 1924, the son of Otis and Edietta (Dunham) Haskell.
He was a graduate of Edward Little High School and received his B.S. as well as his master of education degree from the University of Maine at Orono. Following graduation, he toured as a professional dancer and actor with the Maine Theater in Camden. He served with the Navy Seabees during WWII in the Pacific theater and was a life member of the Lister-Knowlton Post 9389 VFW.Mr. Haskell was a retired English teacher who taught at Caribou High School for more than 35 years as well as teaching speech classes at the University of Maine at Presque Isle for several years. He was the director of the Caribou High School Drama Department for many years, directing such plays as ''Pajama Game,'' ''South Pacific,'' ''Cabaret'' and ''Oklahoma.'' He was also the first director of the Caribou Performing Arts Center, which opened in 1988.
Mr. Haskell was an active member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where he was a past member of the Parish Council. He also attended and served as a lector at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Stockholm. For many years he served as a trustee for the Caribou Public Library and was also treasurer of the Madawaska Lake Campers Association.While many former students described Mr. Haskell as a very tough teacher whose voice was often heard down the corridors of Caribou High School, they remember him as someone who demanded their respect and their very best effort. Many have praised him as someone who made a difference in their education and often explained that later in life they appreciated the discipline and work ethic they learned from him, as he was a frequent invited guest at many Caribou High School class reunions.
His wife, Martha Hamilton Stevens Haskell, died in 1986.
Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie Flagg of Caribou; two stepsons, Whitford Stevens of Caribou, and Willard Stevens of Sanford; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

April 2004Betty House of Medford died Friday (April 9, 2004) at the age of 82. Mrs. House was born on Oct. 31, 1921 in Venice, CA and grew up in Carmel Calif.
She attended College at UC Berkley and UCLA, graduating in 1948. She received her Masters Degree in English from SOSC in 1972. On Feb. 18, 1949 in Long Beach, CA she married Edwin D. House who preceded her in death Dec. 28, 1987. They moved to Medford in 1960.
Betty taught English at Crater High School from 1969 to 1973 and taught writing at SOSC in 1982. She moved to Yachats, OR in 1993, until failing health caused her to return to the Rogue Valley in 2002.
She will be remembered for her love of the English language, both as a writer and as a storyteller. She was a published poet and her last public reading was in Yachats in 1998.
Survivors include her sister, Jane Betts of Pebble Beach, CA; two daughters, Alysoun House of Eugene, Carolyn Marshall of Medford and one grandson.
