June 15, 1993Services are today for longtime Beaumont resident and water conservationist Lewis W. Haskell, who died Friday in Banning.
The 91-year-old farmer was known for pushing county residents to conserve soil and water, years before environmental activism became politically correct.
"He was sympathetic to anything with the environment. Riverside County was his home," said retired Beaumont optometrist John Moore, a friend of Mr. Haskell's for 40 years. "If you wanted an honest, straightforward opinion, all you had to do was ask. You always knew where Louie stood."
Mr. Haskell died of a heart attack Friday at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Mountain View Cemetery in Beaumont.
For 45 years, Mr. Haskell was a volunteer flood control commissioner for the Riverside County Board of Supervisors and served on the Riverside County Flood Control District board. He monitored waste water and oversaw flood control plans of cities throughout the county. He retired three years ago.
He was recognized for his efforts by County Supervisor Norton Younglove.
"He was a pioneer in flood control. He made a very large difference," Younglove said after Mr. Haskell resigned.
For more than a quarter century, Mr. Haskell was a director of San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency and was a director of the San Gorgonio Pass Soil Conservation District. He was one of the founding board members of the agency, which was formed to help bring state water to the Pass.
"He was dedicated to getting supplementary water in here," said agency board President Philip Lamm. "They got a lot of pipeline built for not much money."
Friends said Mr. Haskell's love of the land came from a lifetime of farming in San Timoteo Canyon west of Beaumont, where his family settled in 1868.
Mr. Haskell lived in the canyon almost all his life, ranching and raising dairy cattle. The family sold the ranch and Mr. Haskell moved to Beaumont seven years ago.
In his youth, he attended classes at the one-room San Timoteo Canyon School through the eighth grade. Then, he began riding his horse to Beaumont High School.
Mr. Haskell was a member of the Beaumont Unified School District board of trustees from 1936 to 1947.
As a charter member of the Beaumont chapter of the Kiwanis Club and member of the San Gorgonio Catholic Church, he promoted programs that benefited youth, including scholarships, Boy Scouts and Little League.
He is survived by a son, James of Cherry Valley, three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren
