Records of North Titcomb St., 3rd Congregational Church, Newburyport
(copied 21 August 1984)Nathan Haskell joined the North Congregational Church April 1816 by letter from the 4th Temple Prospect St. Church as member # 260. He was excommunicated on 31 October 1825. The following was found in the Records of the Proprietors of the Third Religious Society, 1768-1826:
Whereas, Brother Nathan Haskell by the unchristian language he has openly used in this church and the spirit of anger and ill-will he has manifested in interrupting Brother Banister while speaking and requesting him not to call him brother has deeply grieved the church and brought dishonor and reproach to the cause of the redeemer and thereby broken his solemn vows and covenant obligations. And whereas notwithstanding the repeated and earnest entreaties with him by this church in their meetings and by the members of it individually and the forbearance and brotherly love uniformly manifested toward him in order to convince him of his criminality and lead him to genuine confession and penitence for the same. He still openly and repeatedly expresses his unwillingness to confess his fault-but on the contrary in the course of the discipline which has been pursued with him has attempted to justify himself and on several occasions both before the church and also more publicly has used unchristian expressions respecting members of this church and has continued to manifest a spirit contrary to the gospel of Jesus and whereas while under the discipline of this church he has, contrary to his solemn obligations and vows and without the knowledge of the church, united himself to another church and now publicly owns himself to be under watch and discipline, whereby he has manifested a spirit of insubordination and contempt toward the discipline and authority of this church. We are therefore constrained by a sense of the solemn obligations resting upon us and the duty we owe to the Saviour and his cause, which we are ever bound to cherish and protect, to pass the following vote:
Resolved that Brother Nathan Haskell be and hereby is excommunicated from this church.
Margin note: The votes on this and the preceding page were communicated to the Sisters of the church at a meeting held November 16, 1825.
