72990. Herrold Arthur Rickey

Dallas County News (Adel, IA)
December 27, 2016

Herrold Arthur Rickey, 90, died peacefully on Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, surrounded by the love of his family.

Herrold Rickey was born May 1, 1926, to Arthur and Birdie (Herrold) Rickey on a farm south of Woodward, Iowa. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1944. After graduating, he met Doris Cireta Mowrer from Perry, Iowa. They fell in love and were married on June 2, 1946. Shortly after their marriage, Cireta became ill and had to go to Oakdale Hospital. Of course, Herrold followed her there where he worked as a maintenance worker. Together they raised five children: Diane (Lee) Amundson, Connie (Steve) Pearson, Mary (Mark) Boyd, Martha Ervin, and Glen (Kristen) Rickey. The family was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 19 grandchildren.

Herrold worked hard all his life in several jobs, including on the farm, the gas station, the grain elevator, the creamery truck, and building awnings. He sharpened saws out of his home beyond his 90th birthday. He was very proud of his work at Northern Natural Gas, where he retired in 1983 after working 37 years.

Herrold was loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. To his family, he was dad or grandpa, the man who shared his home, his love, and his strength and loved us all unconditionally. The times we had together at the lake and at the Rickey Christmas were memories we will cherish. To his friends and neighbors he was someone you could always count on, to plow a garden, sharpen a saw, enjoy conversation on the deck, and share his knowledge to help solve a problem. He cherished his special friend, Sylvia, and greatly enjoyed their long rides in the countryside and many conversations over dinner.

To all of us he was the model for the best we could aspire to be: kind, generous, and unassuming despite the great man we all recognized him to be. We were blessed to be a part of his life and will miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife of 64 years, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

72997. John Norman Haskell

Cremation Society of Virginia

John Haskell was born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 23, 1944, to Kathleen and Melville Haskell.

He passed away peacefully on November 13, 2024, at the age of 80.

Those who knew John laughed with him. He was known by everyone for his situational wit, humorous storytelling, and infectious laugh. That being said, those who knew John also had deep conversations with him about politics, history, and world events. They also probably learned something about his many hobbies and passions: sailing, motorcycles, building and flying model airplanes, playing banjo and guitar, making stained glass windows, painting and drawing, skeet shooting, and reading many many books. His interests and curiosity ranged far and wide. Those who knew him also knew how much he loved his wife, how proud he was of his two daughters, and how much he delighted in his three grandchildren. He was kind to all he encountered, whether human or animal.

After graduating from high school, John enlisted in the Air Force in 1963 where the military discovered his talent for language acquisition. He spent a year studying at the Air Force's Intensive Russian Language Program at Syracuse University. He then served over two years overseas, finishing with a long stint in Trabzon, Turkey where he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. After his honorable discharge he attended the University of Massachusetts from which he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Russian Language and Literature.

While at the University of Massachusetts he also met his wife of 57 years, Rose (Chiasson).

After a few years of selling trucks, cars, and motorcycles, John moved with his family to Virginia in 1975. He spent the next 26 years working as a Russian linguist, senior analyst, and manager with the Central Intelligence Agency's Foreign Broadcast Information Service. During this time John also earned his Master's Degree in International Transactions at George Mason University. He was most proud of the year that he spent working on the President's Daily Brief, reflecting his deep commitment to our national security.

John is survived by his wife, Rose, his daughters Laurel Rigertas and Johanna Haskell, their spouses Todd Rigertas and Renee VanFleet, grandchildren Emmett Rigertas, Chloe Rigertas, and Eleanor Haskell, sister Christine Riddle, as well as many sisters/brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. He loved you all.
