May 20, 2020Captain William Charles Haskell, USN, Retired, of Norwich, NY and Arlington, VA, died April 24, 2020 in Burke, VA.
He was a good man who loved God, his family, our country, the United States Navy, and Norwich, NY.
Captain Haskell is survived by his daughter and son-in law, Anne and Bob DeLong, of Clifton, VA, and his son and daughter-in-law George and Emily Haskell, of New York City, and their children, Charlie, Elizabeth, and Henry. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Bengert Carry and her husband, Bill, of Sylvan Lake, MI, eight nieces and nephews in the Carry and Tuzo families, cousins Howard Sullivan and Chuck Sullivan, several O'Hara's and many Norwich friends who are "almost family," including Grace Benson Gustafson.
Captain Haskell is the son of the late George Francis Haskell, who came to Norwich from Hyde Park, MA, worked at the Norwich Pharmacal Company and the Norwich Knitting Mill and married Jane Conway Hartigan. Their son, William Charles, born on November 22, 1926, was five years old when his father died. In 1935, his mother remarried George W. Bengert, who started as a chemist at the Norwich Pharmacal Company and ultimately became President and Chairman.
Growing up on Hayes Street, Bill, as he was known as a young boy, had stars and stripes in his eyes and dreams of following the family tradition of becoming a Naval Officer. With that goal in mind, he attended New York Military Academy and The Severn School, and was then appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1945. Thus began 32 years of service to our country and 75 years of Navy stories. Bill Haskell became known as "Charlie" at the Naval Academy and upon his graduation from the Academy in 1949 the newly commissioned Ensign went to flight school at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL. It was here he met and married his "North Star," Dolores Pinney, in 1951, and took off on an adventure of almost 60 years until her death in 2010.
Captain Haskell's Navy assignments took him to many overseas ports around the world and he and Dolores lived all across the United States, with duty stations in: Quonset Point, RI; Corpus Christi, TX; State College, PA; Monterey, CA; Brunswick, GA; Key West, FL; Coronado, CA; Jacksonville Beach, FL; East Greenwich, RI; Norfolk, VA; North Kingstown, RI; Arlington, VA; Washington DC; Annapolis, MD, and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
It is said that for an active duty naval officer, "home is where the Navy sends you," but for Charlie, home was always Norwich, and most especially, Chenango Lake, where he and Dolores enjoyed more than 20 summers together, joined by family and friends from near and far. He was proud to have come from Norwich, always calling it an "All American Town," and the Lake, his "favorite place on earth."
An enthusiastic golfer and aficionado of Broadway music, Charlie was known for his gregarious personality, marvelous storytelling ("some of them are even true"), and exceptional grin. He loved life to the end and lived out his motto: "It doesn't cost anything to be kind." Highlights of Captain Haskell's 32-year Navy career included flying in the Korean War when he was barely out of advanced flight training. He went on to become a Carrier Pilot engaged in Anti-Submarine warfare while based on board the Aircraft Carriers USS Shangri-La, USS Wasp, and the USS Essex. He served in multiple squadrons and was stationed in Key West, FL during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Later, he served as Commander of Air Group 54, which had the distinction of extricating the astronauts and retrieving the Apollo 7 Space Capsule from the Atlantic Ocean. This was broadcast live on CBS with Captain Haskell narrating from the helicopter above the capsule for Walter Cronkite's Evening News.
In addition, he taught ROTC at Penn State University, attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forced in Washington DC, and received his Master's Degree from George Washington University. He often said that every job he had in the Navy was "4.0", except a few where he had to "fly a desk at the Pentagon." But perhaps the best was saved for last. His final assignment in the Navy was Deputy for Operations at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1973 until he retired in 1977. In this capacity, everything having to do with the Academy except academics and sports was in his portfolio. Captain Haskell was responsible for making the academy function both as a unique military installation and also a small town. Whether it was keeping the academy buildings and grounds ship-shape, organizing Presidential visits, procuring a new mascot, Bill the Goat (in Peru), or planning how to properly accommodate women as students at the Academy when that law passed Congress in 1974, Charlie was in the thick of it all, while Dolores served as the President of the Naval Academy Women's Club, a scholarship organization. For the first time in his career Captain Haskell had military quarters and the family lived in a 1800s old brick house overlooking the parade grounds, where Charlie had marched in formation three decades earlier as a Midshipman. He had come full circle.

NORWICH Dolores Pinney Haskell, 82, died Friday, July 2, 2010 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich, surrounded by her family.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bartholomews Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 6 at 11 a.m. followed by interment at St Pauls Cemetery.
Dolores leaves her beloved husband of 59 years, Capt. William Charles Haskell, USN (Ret.), daughter and son-in-law Anne and Bob DeLong; son and daughter-in-law, George and Emily Haskell, and three beautiful grandchildren, Charlie, Elizabeth and Henry.
Born in Pensacola, Florida, Dolores graduated from the College of Notre Dame and served as a social worker, before meeting Charley, a Norwich native and recent Naval Academy graduate, who was in flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station. They were married in 1951 and began a life of adventure with tours of duty in Florida, Texas, Rhode Island, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Annapolis, Maryland
In additional to her career in social work, Dolores served as the President of the Naval Academy Womens Club, volunteered with the George H.W. Bush Presidential campaign, enjoyed working in her daughters flower shop, and as a tour guide in Washington, D.C.
But always the center of her life was her faith and family. A faithful and true Catholic, Dolores attended daily Mass for most of her life, and counted her blessings every day, first among them her family. She was widely regarded as the quintessential Navy wife and reveled in her calling as Most-Best Mama to Anne and George.
Dolores brought high spirits, laughter, a great sense of fun and adventure, a bit of mischief and great love to every day, radiating a special joy as she lived her credo to the fullest: it takes courage to be happy. What everyone will remember about Dolores is her boundless enthusiasm, optimism, and unfailing cheerfulness throughout her life, even in the face of adversity, very recently saying, Im so glad to be alive!
For the past 20 years Dolores and Charley have made their homes Arlington, Virginia, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and Chenango Lake, where they have been blessed with wonderful friends. The Haskell family also wishes to express deep gratitude to our kind and loving caregivers: Almetha, Marie, Maxine, Cris, Bing, Juanita, Mirella and Joan.

April 4, 2019Rockport, MA - Robert Haskell Cooney, born March 1, 1929, son of the late Harold J. and Martha "Gertrude" (Waddell) Cooney. Husband of the late Mabel Jane (Wood) Cooney. Father of seven sons and lifelong resident of Rockport, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in his childhood home surrounded by family on Friday, March 22, 2019.
Bob graduated from Gloucester High School in 1947, where he was the winner of two individual drills and the Haskell Medal in the Manual of Arms Competition. He was a graduate of Huntington Preparatory School Class of 1948. He went on to attend Bryant & Stratton School. Some of his happiest, professional memories were while working for Eugene Thibeault at the Rockport Market in Dock Square from 1945-1958. Working with Mr. Thibeault, Bob learned how to operate a grocery store from start to finish.
His experiences with Gene provided him the opportunity to open his own store, "Bob Cooney's Market," which he operated at 3-5 Main Street from May, 1958, through the fall of 1972. During this time, he was proud to work with (employ) his father-in-law Stan Wood, his mother Gert, many "local characters" such as Harold Beaton, Donald Rowe, Buddy Woods, Alvin S. Brown III and most of his sons. Robbie, John, Jimmy, Chris, Billy and Steve all had an opportunity to do their best at stocking shelves, ringing the register, bagging groceries or taking care of customers on Rockport's Main Street. One of the services he provided during this time was "inside, home delivery." Many will remember Bob for his rather loud melodic whistle when he walked through town, and although he was a happy man, there were other reasons for his whistle. Too many stories to tell, none appropriate to print in a family paper, let's just say it was a better notice of arrival than a door bell.
After closing his store in 1972, Bob, went to work for Cape Ann Market from which he retired in 1992. Bob was active in the community. He was troop committee member of both the Rockport Sea Scouts and Boy Scout Troop #20. Bob and Mabel worked together on the sets for the drama department at St Peter's High School. Bob was a past president of the Rockport Rotary Club. He was a Corporator of the Granite Savings Bank for 43 years including bank trustee for 30 years and audit committee member for 23 years. He also served as Audit Committee chairman for many years.
Bob's biggest love was that of his lifelong partner and marriage of over 65 years to his high school sweetheart Mabel. Together they raised seven sons, helped neighbors, took care of family and ran their family businesses including the market and The Charbury House, which they operated as a bed and breakfast for many years. Bob and Mabel loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to Disney World to visit their son David where he worked. Other destinations they enjoyed together included Naples, Clearwater, Marco Island, and Boynton Beach, Fla. There were a few special trips that included Kodiak, Alaska, to visit their son Chris and his family, road trips across country with grandchildren, and a very special musical tour of Germany and Vienna with the Youth Orchestra of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (their grandson Andrew was a member) where they were able to see the sights of "The Sound of Music," the Salt Mines, Nuremburg and wineries. They also enjoyed trips to Puerto Rico, St. Croix, Hilton Head, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and many other locales up and down the East Coast.
Robert was predeceased by his wife Mabel; two of his sons, William Charles Cooney, and David Stanley Cooney; and three grandchildren, Brian, Thomas, and Katherine.
He is survived by his sons Robert D. and his wife Susan; John P. and his partner Joanne Curreri; James E. and his wife Norma; Christopher B. and his wife Diane; Stephen W. and his wife Annemarie whom he shared the last years of his life with in his childhood home on Atlantic Avenue. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his cousin Alvin S. Brown III and his wife Patricia.
In addition to his melodic whistle, Bob will be fondly remembered for his warm smile, sense of humor, and lighthearted approach to life. Someone who has influenced many, a man who experienced love, a man who was loved, a wonderful husband, an outstanding father of seven sons and a fabulous Grampy. Forever in our hearts.

Mable loved to travel. Her travels included multiple trips to Austria and Alaska, where she even went up to Point Barrow. She enjoyed travels to Hilton Head, S.C., Clovis, N.M., and to Florida including Naples, Marco Island and Disney World, where her son David worked. Mabel found great joy in her involvement with Boy Scout Troop 20.
