Nancy Ruth Collier Sherman, 91, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014.

Nancy was born in Fort Worth on Sept. 14, 1922, to James Collier and Nellie Lee Homan Collier.

She graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in 1940. She attended John Tarleton College for a year, then joined the war effort.

She married W.C. "Bud" Sherman in 1945.

Nancy and Bud were later founding members of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, where she served as volunteer church organist for several decades. After raising four sons, she returned to school in the early '70s and graduated from UTA with a bachelor's degree in nursing. Nancy had a longtime interest in genealogy, connected with her membership in the DAR, the Daughters of 1812, and similar heritage organizations. She held office in several of these organizations, at both the local and state levels.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, and by her son, Winn.

Survivors: Nancy is survived by sons, Clayton, Lee and Chris; and granddaughter, Cindy Sherman.

Aola F. Haskell, 90, of Spring Street and formerly of Cumberland Avenue, Portland, died June 1, 2000, at a local nursing home. She was born in Portland, a daughter of Charles R. and Rose Smith Haskell, attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School.

Miss Haskell was employed by Dun and Bradstreet. She worked 22 years as an office manager for Dr. Henry Tabachnick, retiring in 1973. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Ellen Haskell, 83, of Linden Street and formerly of Carrignan Avenue, South Portland, died Thursday at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida.

She was born in Brighton, Mass., a daughter of Denis and Winifred Cairns Sullivan. She attended Boston schools and was a graduate of Jamaica Plain High School.

Mrs. Haskell came to the Portland area in 1946 and for many years was employed at the Lafayette Town House as resident manager, retiring in 1978. In 1978 she moved to Port Orange. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Portland and a communicant of the Epiphany Church in Port Orange.

Her first husband, Edward Seymourian, died in 1967. Her second husband, Robert F. Haskell, died in 1978. A son, Malcolm J. Seymourian, died in 1994.

She is survived by a son, Edward D. Seymourian of Portland; a sister, Mary Puzo of San Diego; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Charles M. Haskell, 81, formerly of Cumberland Avenue, died Sunday at a South Portland nursing home after a lengthy illness. He was born in Portland, a son of Charles R. and Rose Smith Haskell. He attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1936.

He served in the Army field artillery during World War II. Mr. Haskell was employed by Portland Terminal for over 30 years as a crew dispatcher. He enjoyed working with and teaching baseball to children. For many years he organized and coached a Little League team known as ''Haskell's Aces.'' He was a member of the Harold T. Andrews American Legion Post as well as the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.

He is survived by a sister, Aola Haskell of Portland.

DOVER-FOXCROFT--- Mildred D. Levensalor, 87, wife of the late George E. Levensalor, died Feb. 20, 2003, at a local nursing home.

She was born March 1, 1915, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of George B. and Maude (Clark) Dow.

She graduated from Foxcroft Academy, Class of 1932. She lived in Bangor for 56 years before moving back to Dover-Foxcroft in 1999. While in Bangor, she was a longtime member of the First Universalist Church sand the AUW Guild. Mildred was a 40-year member and past Regent of the Francis Dighton Williams Chapter DAR. She was also a member of the Maine Mayflower Society and a Life Member of the Eastern Star. Mildred enjoyed genealogical work. Besides extensive research on her own family, she thoroughly enjoyed helping others trace their family history. She was also especially fond of spending time at Sebec Lake with family and friends.

In addition to her husband, Mildred was predeceased by a daughter, Norene McClure and a sister, Bernice Hesketh.

She is survived by a son, George W. Levensalor of Millinocket; two granddaughters, Michelle McClure of Woonsocket, R. I., and Theresa O'Brien of Lewiston; two great-grandchildren, Tucker and Caleb O'Brien of Lewiston. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Crowley of Augusta; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Alice Nellie Dow Shepardson, 103, went home to be with the Lord on April 14, 2014, at Hibbard Nursing Home, surrounded by her family.

She was born at her home in East Dover on Jan. 4, 1911, to Lewis Herbert Sr. and Lillian Mitchell Dow, the fifth of ten children.

Alice was raised on a farm in East Dover and attended schools in East Dover and Foxcroft Academy, graduating in 1929. Alice was a 50+ year member of the East Dover Grange and attended regularly until it dissolved. She worked in the office at Foxcroft Academy and also as an operator at the Dover Telephone Company.

She married Alphonso Leroy Shepardson on April 26, 1941, and continued to work while he was in the service during World War II.

Upon his return after the war, they purchased Tri-County Cleaners, formerly the Piscataquis Steam Laundry. Alice also worked for the Department of Health & Welfare until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, The Wesleyan Society and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was awarded the Boston Post Cane in July 2012, which is an honor given to the oldest citizen of the town of Dover-Foxcroft. Alice loved to travel with her family. She had a love for music and learned to play the piano at an early age. She enjoyed many summers with her family at the camp on Sebec Lake. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and a multitude of other crafts.

Alice was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 50 years; her brothers, Elwin, Elmer, Stanley and Ralph Dow; and sisters, Ada Dow Foley and Ruth Dow.

Alice is survived by two sisters, Helen Dow Thomas of Naugautuck, CT and Luella Dow Ostrofsky of Easton, CT; one brother, Lewis H. Dow, Jr. and wife, Leona, of Sebec; four children, Margaret "Peggy" Wakeland of Bowerbank, Lucette Merson of Baltimore, MD, Lewis Shepardson and wife, Laura, of Aztec, NM and Rachel Kimball and husband, Bryan, of Sangerville. She leaves eight grandchildren, Teri Mace and husband, Bob, TimWakeland and wife, Allison, Tami Flanders and husband, Paul, Ted Wakeland and wife, Katherine, Dawn Peck and husband, Carl, Mathew and Sara Shepardson, and Toby Kimball; ten great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

NAUGATUCK   Mrs. Helen Elizabeth (Dow) Thomas, 101, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at her home. She was the widow of John B. Thomas who passed away in 1990 after more than 50 years of marriage.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, March 14, 1914, a daughter of the late Lewis and Lillian (Mitchell) Dow.

She was a graduate of Foxcroft Academy and formerly lived in Watertown and California, prior to moving to Naugatuck in 1984. She was a former employee of Sylvania in California for more than 20 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Watertown and in her earlier years, had been active in many church activities such as the choir, Sunday School and Youth Leadership.

She leaves one son, John Thomas of Naugatuck; two daughters, Evelyn Nelson of Waterbury and Betty Blanner of West Springfield, Mass.; one brother, Lewis Dow of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine; one sister, Luella Ostrofky of Easton; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two daughters, Marcia Gray and Helen Mary Derengowski, and four brothers and three sisters.

Sebec - Lewis H. Dow Jr., 90, passed peacefully surrounded by his family, Sunday November 3, 2019, at his home.
He was born October, 6, 1929, in Dover-Foxcroft, ME, the son of Lewis and Lillian (Mitchell) Dow.

Lew grew up in Dover-Foxcroft and graduated from Foxcroft Academy, class of 1948. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserves. Lew married the love of his life, Leona Finnemore in August of 1951. They have shared many happy years of marriage together. Lew was employed by Agway for thirty-six years. He was the manager of the Dover-Foxcroft Agway store and served his community with care. Once retired, he worked for Volka Agricultural Missionary traveling abroad to third world countries teaching them how to farm and he also enjoyed driving school bus. Lew contracted Macular Degeneration years ago which caused his eyesight to fail but that did not stop him from being active. He shared his love for music by organizing and directing a community choir which performed an array of showtunes at the local churches and nursing homes. He developed a love for woodworking in his later years and said he wished he had discovered working with wood sooner. He cheered for the Foxcroft Academy sports teams and his favorite professional teams; Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. However, his heart was most full when he spent time with his family and said he couldn't have been more blessed.

Lew was a member of Masonic Lodge #52, a long standing member of the United Methodist Church and more recently found a fond fellowship with the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church.

He is survived by four children: Deborah Dyer and her husband, Dennis of Dover-Foxcroft; Judy Dow and her spouse, Deb of Sebec; Shirley Manzo and her husband, Thomas of Maricopa, AZ; and Lewis H. Dow III and his girlfriend, Renee of Millinocket. Lew leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Each child held their very own special place in his heart.

He is also survived by his sister Luella Ostrofsky of Easton, CT and many nieces and nephews.

Sebec - Leona Mae Finnemore Dow, 88, passed at home early morning Saturday, April 17, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 28, 1932, in Caswell, ME, the daughter of Jonas and Margaret (Burgoyne) Finnemore.

Leona spent her childhood in Limestone, ME, before she and her family moved to Atkinson her junior year of high school. She graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1951. She met the love of her life, Lewis Dow, in August 1950.

They were married the following August, and shared more than 67 happy years of marriage. Leona was a caregiver for her husband when Lew took sick in their final years together, before he passed in November 2019.

Once the children were in school, Leona held various positions in manufacturing, banking and retail. Her love for the outdoors kept her active with her family all her life. She was always playing tennis, softball, golf or fishing with the kids in the summertime. Leona was proud to be chosen to fly in a Red Baron biplane, and received a certificate for being Honorary Ground Crew Member of the Red Baron Stearman Squadron from General Aviation in Bangor, ME.

Leona never failed to share her talents by teaching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to cook, sew and knit. After retirement, she would plan an adventure or project for when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren visited. She always looked forward to the annual family gatherings on Memorial Day weekend and at Christmastime. Her favorite time of year was spring when she could get out in her flower gardens; prepping them to flourish so she could enjoy them all summer.

As a long standing, active member in the Methodist church, Leona served on various committees and was influential in fund raising projects. As a member of the MIOSAC GFWC, she was instrumental in the Pinwheel project, awareness to prevent child abuse. Leona was an avid fan of whichever sports teams her grandchildren participated in, and all other school activities. She was also a faithful fan of Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. She was very active, independent and strong.

She is survived by four children, Deborah Dyer and her husband, Dennis, of Dover-Foxcroft, Judy Dow and her spouse, Deb Dagnan, of Sebec, Shirley Manzo and her husband, Thomas, of Maricopa, AZ, and Lewis H. Dow III and his significant other, Renee Tash, of Millinocket. Leona also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will miss her beyond words. Gram, Grammy or GiGi, as she was lovingly called, held a special place in her heart for each one of them. She is also survived by her sister, Meda Durepo of Lee, NH, and many nieces and nephews.

Leona touched the hearts of many and will be missed.
