Norma McNutt gave time, talent generously
From teaching children with Down syndrome how to swim to embroidering tablecloths for a hospital auction, Norma Gene "Nornie" McNutt's desire to help others was a big part of her life.

Mrs. McNutt died last Wednesday (Jan. 23) of complications of liver disease. She was 80.

Born April 23, 1921, in Sioux City, Iowa, she moved with her parents to Yankton, S.D., where she attended public schools and earned a degree in physical education at Yankton College. It was there that she met her future husband, Thomas Jay McNutt.

The couple married Sept. 20, 1947, in Seattle, where Mrs. McNutt had relatives and worked for the Port Authority.

As a member of the Women's Army Corps in the early 1940s, Mrs. McNutt traveled all across the United States and Canada, promoting war bonds and greeting hospital ships. She played the French horn in the corps' marching band and was a drum majorette. Her love of music continued beyond her work in the corps.

"She loved Bach and Mozart," said her daughter, Jeannie VanValkenburg, "but her favorite was 'The Nutcracker.' "

Mrs. McNutt put her physical-education degree to good use in Seattle, where she served as head of the downtown YWCA's physical-education department for several years. But she was most proud of her work helping children with Down syndrome learn to swim.

She also taught physical education at The Bush School from 1959 to 1966 and coached the girls basketball team at St. Brendan's Catholic School in Bothell.

Mrs. McNutt was very active in the church. She was a lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Brendan's and attended national conventions in the 1980s. As president of the North Central deanery for the Seattle Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, she spoke out for greater participation by women in all aspects of church life, especially as teachers, preachers and decision makers.

Her charitable acts were many, from fund raising for United Good Neighbors to embroidering tablecloths for Children's Orthopedic Hospital auctions. The six months of work that went into producing each piece was deeply appreciated by those lucky enough to receive one.

"They were cherished," said her husband, remembering his wife embroidering the tablecloths in front of the television. Mrs. McNutt would often give them to friends' daughters who were getting married.

Residents at Brittany Park retirement home in Woodinville, where the couple moved in April 1999, recall Mrs. McNutt's bridge- and pinochle-playing skills. She would organize bridge parties for friends from the home and from her old Royal Oaks neighborhood.

And woe to those who cheated, said VanValkenburg. "She would call them on it and they respected that. She was persnickety."

They also remember her sense of humor. She always had a joke or funny story, said Dorothea McGrath, a friend and resident of Brittany Park.

"She would come into a room, say 'hello hello hello,' and everyone knew the party was going to start," said VanValkenburg.

Mrs. McNutt is survived by her husband; daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie and Michael VanValkenburg of Carnation; son and daughter-in-law, Paul MacNaughton and Diane Brooks of Everett; and three grandchildren.
