Shutesbury, MA �  Elizabeth Stern, 93, passed away peacefully and comfortably at her son's home on September 25, 2016.

Elizabeth "Betty" May Alexander was born June 8, 1923, in Middletown, CT, to Mary M. {Shoneck} and Robert R. Alexander and is the oldest of her siblings.

She was married three times; Roger E. Butler, Fred Ellis Rowan and Douglas N. Stern.

She was employed as an accountant but finished her career as an executive secretary with Van Epps Construction Company, of Old Saybrook, CT., before her retirement in 1974. She was a master at sewing and had a passion for weaving, knitting and cooking. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and loved to share her cooking and canning secrets with her family and friends. She was involved with several churches including her most recent congregation, the Wesley United Methodist Church of Hadley. She also worked with the local Hospice Shop and Amherst Survival Center. Elizabeth touched so many people with humor, kindness of heart, and her honest and most deliberate straightforwardness.

Those that knew her would remark that she was never afraid to try new things. Elizabeth is survived by her brother and his wife, Richard and Roberta Alexander of Gasetts, VT, her sisters, Grace Stalsburg of Deep River, CT, Gloria Burdick of Ivoryton, CT, Roberta Ziobron of Deep River, CT, and Paulette Grisky of Ivoryton, CT. Her sister Mary Hubert of FL predeceased her.

She is also survived by her son and his wife, John and Yvette Rowan.

Her son, William A. Rowan III predeceased her, as well as her late Husbands, Fred Ellis Rowan and Douglas N. Stern.

Nancy R. Hutchison, 102+, died April 15, 2006 at Stuart Nursing & Restorative Care Center.

She was born July 11, 1903 in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Rolla, MO and Pelham, NY. She was the daughter of Nancy and William Rowan, a Grand Mason of NY State. She was raised with four brothers, Jim, John, Fred and Bill and a sister, Martha, all deceased.

She resided in Fair Lawn NJ with her beloved husband Kenneth, a Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Pace University in New York City, who predeceased her in 1975.

She was a longtime and faithful member of the Church in Radburn, a volunteer to many civic and charitable organizations and a dedicated NY Mets fan.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Lynn Hutchison of Norwood, NJ, a son William Rowan Hutchison and daughter-in-law Marion Lipman Hutchison of Jensen Beach, FL and Manns Harbor, NC, a granddaughter Gail Florence Hutchison-Lay of Manteo, NC, Marguerite Ann HutchisonRhodes with great grandsons Billy and Kenny Thomason and great granddaughter Emily Thomason, all of Kernersville, NC.

A grandson, John Kenneth Hutchison, predeceased her in 1996.

Florence Emaline Rowan, 94, Meta, died Nov. 23, 2002, at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged.

She was born Dec. 11, 1907, in Clearlake, Wash., a daughter of Jasper A. and Nancy Stubbs Baker. She was married June 12, 1929, in Liberty, to John Fred Rowan, who died June 1, 1989.

She co-owned and co-operated the IGA store in Meta for many years.

Survivors include: one foster daughter, Ruth Ehman, Raytown.

One son, Tommy Rowan, preceded her in death.

Dorsey E. Rowan of Seattle, Washington, formerly of Meta and Jefferson City, Mo. died on Saturday June 26, 2004, in Seattle, Wash.

He was born November 29, 1914, in Meta Mo., the son of Nathan J. Rowan and Meta Schriefer Rowan. He was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission and subsequent contractors at the Hanford Nuclear Plant in Richland, Wash.

He is survived by his son Dorsey E. Rowan Jr. of Seattle, Wash., one brother, W. Barry Rowan of Jefferson City Mo., three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A daughter, Carol Ann Phillips preceded him in death.

Dr. W. Barry Rowan, 84, of Jefferson City died Saturday, February 25, 2006 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born November 22, 1921 in Meta, Missouri, the son of Nathan J. and Rose Otke Rowan. He was a 1939 graduate of Meta High School, and a 1941 graduate of Jefferson City Junior college. Dr. Rowan graduated from St. Louis University School of Dentistry in 1945. He was married October 20, 1945 to Clara Huhman, in St. Louis University College Church.

Dr. Rowan served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps as a ship's dentist in the Pacific until 1947. He began private dental practice in Meta until 1961, when he moved to Jefferson City and continued until his retirement from full-time practice in 1991.

He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree; Jefferson City Dental Society; Missouri Dental Association; American Dental Association; Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity; Phi Beta Kappa; and Omicron Kappa Epsilon honorary dental fraternity. He was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He enjoyed his family especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards and fishing with family and friends. He was a passionate baseball fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He will be remembered as a gentleman.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Clara and his six children: Dr. Ken Rowan and wife Lou Anne of Jefferson City; Jim Rowan of Kansas City; Jan Miller and husband Duane of Leawood, Kansas; Sue Ann Malinee and husband John of Leawood, Kansas; Joe Rowan of Kansas City; Mary Schwartz and husband Bill of Prairie Village, Kansas; and thirteen grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers: Dr. Robert Rowan, Fred Rowan, N.J. Rowan, Jr., James Rowan, Dorsey Rowan; and his sisters: Ethel Thompson and Mildred Gerard.

Keith K. Vaughan passed away Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center due to heart failure.

He was born in 1934 to Maude and Forest Vaughan in Everett, Wash. They moved to Cardiff, Idaho, when he was young and then moved to Headquarters, where his parents worked for Potlatch Forests Inc. He grew up in the "Circle" at Headquarters and attended Pierce schools and graduated from Pierce High School in 1952. He met Ramona (McDonald) Llewellyn and in 1954, they were married in Lewiston. By 1961, the family consisted of two older daughters, Kathie and Susan, and two younger sons, Scott and Kris. They lived in Lewiston until 1963 and within one year had lived in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. Keith was a "gypo" logger and went where the work was. He lived in St. Regis, Mont., for three years before moving back to Pierce.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as a great mechanic and all around "fix-it man." He made his living hauling logs but could do anything he put his mind to. In 1972, Keith, Ramona and the boys moved to Superior, Mont., where he lived for 43 years. In early 2015, the family moved him to Serenity Place in Lewiston so he could be closer to his daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maude and Forest Vaughan; his wife of 52 years, Ramona; an infant son, Bryon Keith; his brothers, Norman and Joe Vaughan. Survivors include children Kathie (and Glen) Smith of Lewiston, Susan (and Mark) Snider of Clarkston, Scott (and Bridgette) Vaughan of North Pole, Alaska, and Kris (and Doreen) Vaughan of Superior, Mont.

Ramona was born May 7, 1933, in Helena, Mont., to Ray and Ione McDonald. She lived most of her life in Lewiston, Pierce, St. Regis, Mont., and Superior.

Ramona married Keith Vaughan Dec. 20, 1954, in Lewiston. An earlier marriage ended in divorce.

She was very active in Women in Timber for several years. She enjoyed their time camping and fishing. She especially enjoyed the trips they made to Alaska and traveling in their motorhome.

Mrs. Barrett was born Nov. 27, 1921, in McCleary.

She enjoyed hiking and picking berries with her family.

Her husband, Irvin, died in 1992, and Mrs. Barrett lived with her son, David, for the past 10 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Claudia Cook of Vancouver, and Ruth Lyman and Becky Stover, both of Nampa, Idaho; five sons, Mike of Las Vegas, Jon of Osan Air Base in Korea and Steve, Phillip and David, all of Vancouver; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In life he had worked for the Boeing Company for 42 years. Since 1958, he was an active boater and was a member and past Commodore of Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club. He was also President of the Interclub Boating Association of Washington. Keith also enjoyed traveling around the country in their motor home and was a past president of Monaco Northwest and Monaco International.

She was born June 15, 1919, in Hoquiam, Wash., to Seth and C. Elta Sorter Bunch. She married Edward Parker Haskell on Nov. 21, 1936, in Montesano, Wash.

She was a cook for most of her life, including more than 20 years at the Elks Lodge in Florence.

Surivivors include a son, Ed Haskell of Folsom, Calif.; three daughters, Betty Bergstrom of Ione, Tammy Gunderson of Tumwater, Wash., and Penny Grotting of Ontario; and 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Her husband and a daughter, Cheryl, died previously.

Robert James Scheckla

Ocean Park resident Robert J. "Bob" Scheckla, 81, died June 20, 2002, at home.

The son of Albert and Gertrude (Ochs) Scheckla, he was born Dec. 22, 1920, in Tigard, Ore. He grew up on the family farm in Tigard where his parents raised garlic and strawberries.

Mr. Scheckla worked in the Portland shipyards during World War II. He then served four years with the Navy in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Mississippi and was in Toyko Bay for the formal surrender ceremonies.

Returning to Tigard, Mr. Scheckla delivered mail before moving to Coquille, Ore., where he was a bartender at the American Legion.

In the 1950s, he and brother Howard Scheckla operated Ole's Nook in Ocean Park. He later tended bar at Doc's Tavern in Ocean Park. He worked a number of years in seafood processing at Eastpoint Seafoods in Nahcotta until he retired.

Mr. Scheckla was baptized in the Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Long Beach Elks and a member of the Moose and Eagles lodges in Ocean Park.

He enjoyed clamming, spending time with family and friends and gardening. He always had a soft spot for birds, chickens and any winged creatures. His family will remember his sense of humor and his committment to helping his fellow man and "the underdog."

He is survived by one daughter, Cyndi Keyes of Marysville, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Kathleen Kary of Ocean Park; two brothers, James Scheckla of Sheridan, Wyo., and Bernard Scheckla of Aurora, Ore.; three sisters, Ethel Harris and Clara Kreick, both of King City, Ore., and Lucille Wilberger of Myrtle Point, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews; and longtime companion Darline Swaggart of Ocean Park.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chuck Scheckla and Howard Scheckla; and three sisters, Marie, Helen and Edith.
