Joseph T. Haskell. born 1797 In Newburyport. Massachusetts. USA and longtime, resident of Cincinnati, Ohio died in that city on 31 December 188I. As a boy he joined the Militia of Newburyport in her defence during the War of 1812. In 1817, he removed to Marietta. Ohio and two years later went to Washington DC. where he was employed by the Post Office Department until 1832. In that year he purchased a farm from the Shawnee Indian Chief, Blue Jacket, near Wapakoneta, Ohio, and established an Episcopal church and Sunday School in the chiefs wigwam. In 1837 he moved to Cincinnati where he worked twelve years In the post office, then twenty-five years as crier in the US Court.
When Confederate guerilla raider John Morgan threatened Cincinnati during the Civil War In 1862, although Joseph was sixty-six years old he shouldered his musket and joined the ranks to repel invasion. Four of his sons were in the Union Army at one time during the Civil War and one. Captain Joseph T. Haskell was still in service in 1882, and rose to be a Brigadier General.
Mr. Haskell was the eldest of thirteen children of whom the late Daniel Haskell. editor of the Boston Transcript newspaper was the youngest.
