June 28, 2002LEOMINSTER -- Annie Frances (Gettens) Goodale, 103, of 116 Biscayne St., died Thursday, June 27, in HealthAlliance Hospital/Leominster, after an illness.
Born Dec. 24, 1898 in Leominster, she was the daughter of William and Annie Marie (Sheehan) Gettens and lived here all of her life.
Mrs. Goodale was a member of the Holy Family of Nazareth Church, St. Leo's Church and the Leominster Golden Age Club. She was also an avid hat maker.
She leaves four daughters, Madeline Loiselle of Lady Lake, Fla., Sister Janice Goodale of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Leominster, Marie Farnsworth and Eleanor Goodale, both of Leominster; 32 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
Her husband, Everett B. Goodale Sr., died in 1958. She was predeceased by a son, Everett B. Goodale Jr., two daughters, Sister Mary Lorraine of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Lorraine Ruth Goodale and one brother, Leroy Gettens.

January 12, 1994DOVER, Del. - Alston L. Preston Jr., 87, of Philcris Drive, formerly of Leominster, died of cancer Monday in Kent General Hospital.
His wife, Elizabeth Mary (Campbell) Preston, died in 1981.
He leaves a son, John Preston of Dover; a daughter, Joanne Irvine of South San Gabriel, Calif.; his twin-sister, Alice Preston of Dover; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was born in Leominster, son of Alston L. Sr. and Alice L. (Goodale) Preston, and had lived in Quincy, Mass., and later in Dover for many years.
He graduated from Northeastern University.
Mr. Preston worked for General Foods many years, retiring in 1971.

April 14, 2006LEOMINSTER - Phyllis N. (Day) Carter, 87, of the Life Care Center of Leominster, formerly of 810 Lancaster St., died Friday, April 7, after an illness. She was born in Bangor, Maine on March 26, 1919, the daughter of the late Walter and Francena (Clark) Day.
Mrs. Carter was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leominster and the Friendship Guild. She was a member of the former Lancaster Street School PTA, a Civil Defense Air spotter in World War II, volunteer reader at Johnny Appleseed School in Leominster, and provided child care services to pre-school children and her great-grandchildren.
Her employment included jobs at Woolworth's and Deary Bros. She and her husband hosted holiday meals for service men stationed at Fort Devens during World War II. She loved children, poetry, cowboy movies, Lawrence Welk, and helping people.
Mrs. Carter is survived by her only son, Wilbur Henry Carter, Jr. and his wife Joan (Docekal) Carter of Leominster; her grandchildren, Debra Turner of Leominster, Kirk Carter of Hudson, and Scott Carter of Harvard; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Christopher Turner of Leominster.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur H. Carter, Sr. in 1962. She also had a brother, Melvin Day of Easton, who predeceased her.

February 19, 2003LUNENBURG -- Gladys M. (Merrill) Goodale, 95, of 92 Leominster Road, died Monday, Feb. 17, at home after an illness.
Her husband of 42 years, George W. Goodale, died in 1980. She leaves three sons, Glenn W. Goodale of Castleton, Vt., James R. Goodale of Eastham and John W. Goodale of Princeton; two daughters, Jane L. Nye of Onalaska, Texas, and Elizabeth G. Torre of Wilton, N.H.; a sister, Eleanor Dinsmore of Cochranton, Pa.; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She attended Lunenburg High School and graduated from the former Stevens Business College in Fitchburg. She was born in Leominster, daughter of Benjamin F. and Edith (Ropes) Merrill.
Mrs. Goodale was the welfare director for the Town of Lunenburg, and was then a welfare district director for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Fitchburg, retiring in 1972. She worked at the former Fitchburg Yarn Co. from 1927 to 1939. She was a leader of the Lunenburg 4H Club, and a member of the Fitchburg Professional Women's Club. She enjoyed making braided rugs, knitting and crocheting. She loved to travel and was an avid reader. She spent winters in Florida, and summers in Ashburnham.

July 13, 2006Helen Goodale died July 7, 2006 in Claremont, California. She was born December 23, 1904, in Almena, Kansas. She lived in Pomona and Claremont since 1926, when she moved to California as the bride of Ralph Goodale. Helen was a graduate of Oregon Aricultural College, now Oregon State University at Corvallis, Oregon. She was a retired elementary school teacher. After retirement, her teaching continued as a docent at the Santa Ana Botanic Gardens for 13 years. She enjoyed her activities with Trinity Methodist Church, Retired Teachers, Sierra Club and Pomona Lawn Bowlers.
Helen leaves three daughters, Phyllis Roberts (Roy) of Orange, California; Lenore Boss (Herb) of Claremont; Judy Henderson (John) of Bakersfield, California; and son, William Goodale (Susan) of Palos Verdes, California. She had 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Helen Goodale is best remembered for her devotion to family, dedication to teaching, interest in nature camping, backpacking and for the love of music that she passed on to her family.

December 12, 1992A funeral for Kenneth F. Goodale, a longtime resident of the Portland area, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Everhart & Kent Funeral Home in Canby. Private interment will be in Zion Memorial Park in Canby.
He died Tuesday in his Southeast Portland home of complications from Parkinson's disease. Mr. Goodale was 90.
Born March 4, 1902, in Hecla, S.D., he was raised and schooled in Anaheim, Calif. He attended Pomona College as well as Oregon State College, where he was a member of Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. He married Reba M. Moore on April 4, 1936, in Fullerton, Calif.
Mr. Goodale worked as a bank manager for a number of years until his retirement. He lived in Canby from 1964 until he moved to the Southeast Portland area in 1989.
Survivors besides his wife include his daughter, Sally Jo Schenk of Portland; and three grandsons.

May 25, 2004Funeral for former Yamhill resident Reba Moore Goodale of Milwaukie was held Saturday in the Canby Funeral Chapel. Private interment was in Zion Memorial Cemetery.
She died May 19, 2004, in a Milwaukie care center. She was 94.
She was born Aug. 11, 1909, in Union, Mo., daughter of Allen R. and Helen Bruns Moore. She graduated from high school in Mount Vernon, Wash., and received her teaching license from Bellingham Normal School. She taught in the Mount Vernon area during the school year and traveled to Los Angeles during summers to complete her bachelor's degree.
It was during such a trip she met her future husband, Ken Goodale. They married April 4, 1936, after a brief courtship.
The Goodales lived in California a short time, then relocated to the Northwest to be closer to her family. About 1952, the Goodales moved to Yamhill, and she taught elementary classes and music in various schools in the Yamhill area.
Mrs. Goodale received her master's in education degree in 1956 from Linfield College in McMinnville. She taught briefly at the college.
In 1964, the Goodales moved to Canby and lived there until 1989, when they moved to a Milwaukie retirement community. Her husband preceded her in death in 1992.
She attended Tabor Heights United Methodist Church with her daughter Sally and was active in the retirement community. She was involved with music all of her life and took pleasure in combining it with her faith. She also enjoyed spending time with her daughter and grandsons, attending family reunions and returning to Mount Vernon and talking about her childhood years there.
Survivors include her daughter, Sally Jo Schenk of Milwaukie; her brother, Glenn Moore of Bremerton, Wash.; and grandsons, Erik Schenk and Matthew Schenk, both of Milwaukie, and Christopher Schenk of Long Beach, Calif.

Walter B. Goodale, 88,of Hilcrest Ave., died Monday at Sacred Heart Nursing Home.
He was born the son of Frank E. and Susie S. (Pratt) Goodale.
He attended Plattsburgh High School and Albany Business College. Mr. Goodale worked for his father as a young man and later became partners with him in the wholesale grocery business at FE & WB Goodale Wholesale Groceries on Lower Court St. in Plattsburgh. He later became sole owner/operator until his retirement in 1959.
Mr. Goodale's first wife, Mabel D'Allaire Goodale, died in 1971.
Survivors include his wife, the former Ada Mabel (Craig) Downey; four daughters, Mrs. Floyd (Betsy) Thayer of Rockland, ME, Mrs. Billy Joe (Dora) Leopard and Mrs. Bradley (Virginia) Trombley, both of Plattsburgh, and Mrs. Nicholas (Myra) Piazza of New Bern, NC; one brother, E. Dudley Goodale of Wilmington; 11 grandchildren.
