69969. Roy David Haskell

The Windsor Star (Windsor, Ontario, Canada)
December 11, 1968

Chatham - Roy David Haskell, 42, who died early Tuesday morning with his wife, five young children and his father-in-law in a roaring farmhouse blaze near West Lorne, was a big man.

Not only was he big physically - six foot, one, 220 pounds - but big in other ways.

His sister, Mrs. Hector Lozon, 75 Lorne4 Ave., Chatham, remembered "Roy" Tuesday night as she sat on her sofa with her husband in their comfortable home, surrounded by her children.

She said the realization of what happened early that morning in eight-degree-below-zero weather had not fully sunk in.

Killed in the fire were Mr. Haskell. his wife, the former Sylvia Bebensee, 27; their children, Patrick, 7; Carol. 6; Judy, 5; David Jr., 4, and Shirley 1, and Mrs. Haskell's foster father, Jodhua Bebensee.

Mr. Haskell is survived by his mother, the former Rose Pepper of of Chatham; sisters, Mrs. Gordon (Grace) Plumb. of Raleigh Township; Mrs. Hector (Florence) Lozon of Chatham; Mrs. Lester Mifflin of Thamesville; brothers, Harold of Glencoe and Clinton of Chatham.

...

Mr. Haskell was who worked hard and enjoyed himself when he had time off.

Eight years ago, while working in a nursing home near Dresden which was run by another sister, Mrs. Gordon Plumb of Raleigh Township, Mr. Haskell met Sylvia Bebensee, a practical nurse who had who had just been hired to work at the home.

They fell in love and married.

It wasn't an easy life. He had two Sundays off every month and the rest of the time he worked.,

The money wasn't good. "He worked for what he made," Mrs. Ozon said, "but he never complained about life."

But Christmas was coming and the Haskells had planned to spend the holidays in their frame home by a snowy country road in in rural Elgin County.

They had invited Mr. Haskell's mother, Mrs. Rose Haskell of Chatham to join them.

Mrs. Lozon said she thought they had started buying Christmas gifts for the five children.

The Haskells used their family allowance cheques to purchase the gifts, then stored them away until the 25th.

Sometimes the various families would get together for Christmas, but usually family gatherings took place during the summer months in the form of picnics.

The tree oldest children attended public school in Glencoe.

According to all reports the family didn't have a chance to get out of their home Tuesday.

At least one of the family, Joshua Bebensee, Mrs. Haskell's foster father, was found by fireman in his bed. He had been an invalid.

Constable Robert Squire, of the Dutton Ontario Provincial Police detachment, who was first on the scene, said all that was left standing when he arrived on the scene were three pieces of timber at the front of the house which collapsed moments later.

"Absolutely nothing could be done by the time I got there," he said Tuesday night from his home.

All the bodies were found by 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, he said, and the three adults were sent to Toronto for identification purposes.

Constable Squire said it was difficult to say whether any of the children had been in their beds when found in the rubble.

He felt that there would likely be an inquest into the tragedy, which was termed the worst in the history of Elgin County.

Robert Kaufman, an Ontario fire marshal from London is investigating.

The home was heated by a wood stove in the dining. room.
