Mr. E. Llewellyn Haskell, aged 84 years, died Friday 20 Dec. 1957 at 40 Lebanon Street, Melrose, MA. Born in Augusta, Maine, s/o Abner and Melissa (Merrill) Haskell, he began a distinguished photographic career in Augusta doing studio work. He accompanied the first Maine Regiment to Tennessee during the Spanish American War of 1898, recording their training and then was sent as official War Department photographer to Cuba. Known among his associates as "Lew", he became the first fulltime photographer for the Boston Post newspaper and later worked for the Boston Herald, then for the Boston Globe from 1923 to 1955 when he retired. During WWI he was official government photographer at the Fore River Shipyard, and he had photographed every US president, starting with Grover Cleveland in 1904 at Buzzards Bay. At the disastrous Chelsea fire he kept clicking his camera as he retreated from the flames which melted the lead in his camera. He recorded the Grover Shoe Factory fire in Brockton in 1903 that claimed 43 lives. One of his major accomplishments was photographing the magician Harry Houdini as he plunged off the Harvard Bridge fully shackled. For that shot Lew Haskell won top prize among 37 contestants.
He was survived by his wife E. Louise (Martin) Haskell and two brothers, William and Aubrey.
