At Shady Grove Hospital. He resided in Montgomery Village, MD. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of Alabama and retired in 1975 from the Government Accountability Office where he supervised government transportation audits.His wife of 69 years, Mary Janet White Lawson died November 20, 2006.
He is survived by two daughters, Terry Lamond of Colorado and Mary Hurd Lawson of Maryland; two grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

February 20, 2009Gifford Lawson, 98, a retired auditing supervisor at the former General Accounting Office, died Feb. 8 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. He had bladder cancer.
Mr. Lawson, who lived in Montgomery Village, moved to Washington to join the GAO (now the Government Accountability Office) in 1945. He supervised government transportation audits until his retirement in 1975.Gifford Edmund Hurd Lawson was born in North Middleboro, Mass., and spent part of his youth in his mother's native Quebec. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1940 and worked for Union Carbide Corp. in Alabama during World War II.
His wife of 69 years, Mary White Lawson, died in 2006.
Survivors include two daughters, Terry Lamond of Longmont, Colo., and Mary Hurd Lawson of Montgomery Village; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Lionel Hurd served in the Canadian Army from 1940 to 1946. He was captured 25 December 1941 at Hong Kong and held as a prisoner of war until released in August 1945. He operated the old Luke Hurd farm at Newport from 1945 to 1970, and later resided at Sawyerville.
