Ten persons apparently died when fire ravaged the passenger-carrying Norwegian freighter
Sandanger off the Mexican coast Thursday. A rescue ship saved 45 persons, the body of an unidentified woman was found and nine other persons are missing and presumed dead. The victims were believed to include the ship's seven passengers, all from California.
Apparently most of the all-Norwegian crew and the passengers were asleep when fire
erupted aboard the 5,600-ton vessel off the coast of Mexico,early Monday. The ship was en
route to Le Havre, France, via tho Panama Canal.

We are sad to announce that our mom and Grandma, Janie Lynn Haskill, passed away on January 19, 2024.
Janie was born on October 19, 1935 in Pasadena, California to Loren and Dorothy Lynn. Janie grew up in Southern California and attended Mt. San Antonio College and Whittier College, where she received her bachelor's degree. On December 19, 1958, she married her husband, Bill, and they started their family in West Covina, CA and welcomed two sons, Rick and Tim.
Bill and Janie relocated their family to Visalia in 1972. Janie's true passion in life was teaching - something she dedicated over 30 years of her life to. She was a teacher in Visalia for many years. Janie received her master's degree from Fresno State, ultimately becoming a school assistant principal. She retired from Visalia Unified School District as an administrator, and upon her retirement, she continued to sub as an administrator within the school district. Janie had a heart and love for teaching and impacted the lives of countless students, teachers, and administrators throughout her long and fulfilling career.
Janie and Bill spent their retirement years traveling to many car shows with their beloved 1955 Thunderbird. Janie enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, visiting with her family and friends, and her pug dogs. Janie had a profound love for her family and she beamed with pride whenever she spoke of her grandchildren. Janie was a passionate woman, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Janie was predeceased by her husband, Bill Haskill, and sister, Debbi Merritt.
She is survived by sister, Patricia Carroll; son, Rick, and his wife, Kathy; son, Tim, and his wife Stacie; grandchildren, Kirk (Kristin), Jennifer (Patrick Dotsy), Tanner, Gunnar (Erin), and Makenna; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today for Harry E. Jillson, 59, a decorated veteran of World War II and San Jose resident for 30 years. He died Saturday in a Palo Alto hospital after a short illness.
Born in Kansas, Jillson served in the Army in the south Pacific during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for bravery and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
Jillson, of 817 Hillsdale Ave., was a millman for the Birnie Lumber and Fence Co. of San Jose. He and his wife were married 30 years ago in the Grace Baptist Church here.
Besides his wife, Geraldine E. Jillson, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Carol Ann Graham of Escondido; two sons, Gary Jillson of San Jose and Virgil Jillson of Campbell; a stepson, Dwight Murray of Sacramento, and seven grandchildren.

May 25, 2012Wayne Robert Buckman Feb. 26, 1935 - May 18, 2012 Resident of Clayton Wayne Robert Buckman, long time resident of Clayton died Friday, May 18th at the age of 77.
He passed away at home surrounded by his loving family, wife of 55 years Jacqueline Buckman, daughters Terri Buckman and Linda Reed and sons, Wayne Buckman and Michael Buckman. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, two great grand children, two brothers and a large extended family.
Wayne was raised in San Francisco in the Mission district, where he attended Riordan High an all male Catholic school. Wayne joined the Coast Guard in 1954 where he proudly served his country. Upon returning, he got a job with Pacific Bell which became a 28 year career.
Wayne met his future wife "Jackie" when he was 18 and she was 14. They married in 1957 and started their family. In 1965 they moved to Concord to raise their children. They finally settled in the town of Clayton at the foot of Mt. Diablo in 1978. Wayne reflected more than once to his children, "The smartest thing I ever did was to marry your mother."
Wayne loved to have a good time. He played softball nearly all his adult life. His last league was the Walnut Creek Creakers. Wayne was also passionate about boating, fishing, music and old movies. He was a regular patron of the Clayton club. He could be spotted there with his loyal sidekick, a scruffy Jack Russell terrier, named Brilly. Wayne's photographs of several of Clayton's elder cowboys and characters hang on the wall of the historic saloon. Wayne Buckman was a grand character and patriarch of a large family. He was known as a good joke and story teller.
