December 3, 2019Leroy Frank Udell, 87, of Mancelona, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
The son of Frank and Zella, he was born in Bellaire on Feb. 9, 1932. He married his wife, Marilyn "Muggs" on Feb. 14, 1950.
Leroy grew up on his family farm in Alden. He worked on Old Mission Peninsula, was a milkman and then worked at Lamina until he retired after 40 years in 1995.
He was a simple man who worked hard for his family. He enjoyed sharing stories with his friends and family next to his barrel stove in the garage. He loved finding humor in life.
He also understood the importance of family values. Family members and friends would stop by the family farm and were always welcomed with open arms. Snowmobile, tractor, four-wheeler and side-by-side rides were some of the pastimes he enjoyed with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
Leroy loved all things John Deere (tractors, hats, shirts, suspenders, pajamas, you name it, he had it). He took great pride in his garden, which he and Marilyn tended to every summer. He also enjoyed watching Detroit Tiger games and sitting on his porch with Marilyn. For 69 years they were inseparable and were a beacon of love for their family.
He is survived by his four children, Jean (Jim) Lazar, Frank (Vicki) Udell, Sue (Lee) Malone, and Jim (Stacy) Udell; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Marilyn Udell.
The High River Times
December 2, 1948Mrs. Isabel Fowler, beloved wife of L.A. Fowler of High River, died at her home on November 27 at the age of 73 years. Her passing ended many years of illness and suffering.
She is survived by her husband, three daughters and one son. They are Mrs. Bert Rowland of Blackie, Mrs. Wm. McGillvray of Hartell, Mrs. Cliffo Robbins of Blackie, and Roy of Aldersyde. Eighteen grandchildren also survive, as well as three sisters, Mrs. John Douglas of Carnduff, Sask.; Mrs. John Bridgeford of Grand Falls, N.D.; Mrs. Walker Dale of Willow Cove, Ontario.
Mrs. Fowler was born at Dundalk, Ontario, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fraser, who were members of the Fraser settlement, early pioneers of that part of Ontario. She was married to Mr. Fowler in 1900, and continuing her pioneering heritage, she came as a bride with her husband to the new great west. Their first farm home was on the Highwood in the vicinity of the present site of Aldersyde. In 1907 they moved into High River where Mr. Fowler operated a flour mill. In 1912 they returned to farming, taking up land on Gladys Ridge, but still retaining their High River home. In 1939 they came back to town to reside.
During the years of early settlement, church services were held at Mrs. Fowler's home and she continued her active devotion to church work, until invalidism forced her retirement. She was a splendid wife and mother, and a sympathetic and helpful neighbor. Her recent years of inactivity and illness have been borne with great fortitude, and in courageous Christian spirit.
