67762. Harold Sidney Brooking

Obituary

Harold Sidney Brooking of Treherne, Manitoba, dearly beloved husband of Elsie passed away on Saturday, May 4, 1991 at the Tiger Hills Health Center, Treherne, Man. at 80 years of age.

Born February 17, 1911 in the Treherne District, Harold spent most of his life in the area. On March 28, 1938 he married Elsie Simpson, later serving his country during World War II from 1940 to 1945 with the Royal Canadian Air Force, then working on road construction in the Brandon area for a time. In 1952 he began blacksmithing in Treherne and continued until 1979 during most of which period he also farmed in the Matcherrville District.

Harold was always an avid and committed community supporter serving on the School, Hospital, Museum and Legion Lodge Boards. He was a member of the Treherne Fire Dept., had been a Legion Zone Commander and had been District Deputy Grand Master of the 3rd Masonic District. He had been a member of Treherne Legion, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and an active member of the Treherne United Church. After several years as town councillor, Harold served as Mayor of Treherne for 5 years. In later years Harold became an avid genealogist and had served as chairman of the Treherne History Book.

Harold leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Elsie, one son Barrie and wife Dorothy of Minnedosa, Man.; one daughter, Barbara and husband Ray Pettinger of Shoal Lake, Man.; five grandchildren, Cary and wife Charlene Pettinger, Tannis Pettinger, Michelle, Brett and Chad Brooking; two great grandchildren, Khalicia and Carlyle Pettinger and one brother Leslie and wife Gladys.

He was predeceased by his father Sidney in 1958, his mother Inez in 1970, by one brother Charles in 1947 and by one sister Eileen McKinnon in 1990.


67763. Charles Curtis Brooking

Leading Aircraftman Brooking, aboard Beechcraft 'Expeditor' MkII (#1394) aircraft which was flying from Whitehorse to Teslin, both in the Yukon Territory, lost his life when the Expeditor crashed in a heavy snowstorm. Five servicemen and one civilian perished in this aircraft accident.

Leading Aircraftman Charles Curtis Brooking is commemorated on Page 594 of Canada's Second World War Book of Remembrance.

Mesa - Cora K. Stanton, 75, a homemaker, died March 26, 1985. at Valley Lutheran Hospital.

Mrs. Stanton was born in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada. She was a long time winter visitor to Mesa. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Colorado, Colorado Country Club and the Peterson and Williams Air Force bases' golf clubs.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence; daughters, Frances Crittenden; Coralee McTaggart and Elaine Joyce; a sister and a brother; and six grandchildren.

1925 - 2008

Mrs. Violet (Vi) Thomas, beloved wife of the late Mr. George Thomas, passed away at the Bow Island Health Centre on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at the age of 82 years.

Violet was born on November 29, 1925 on a farm near Bow Island, a daughter to Walter and Yvonne Egan. She grew up on the farm, learning the value of a hard days work.

On October 16, 1944, she married Bill Haskill and raised a family of three children. Bill passed away in 1962, leaving her to carry on the family farm with her children.

Violet kept herself busy and became involved with compiling information for the Silver Sage History Book. During this time, she got to know George (Jack) Thomas and later married. Violet enjoyed the company of her family and was the host of many gatherings. In her younger years, the family would enjoy the music she made playing the piano. She loved music and liked to dance. Her family was very important to her and in return, she was cherished by them. In 1973, Violet was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness. This proved to be a positive change in which she deeply believed in. Her commitment was unmatched as she was a strong advocate for Southern Alberta. For the past eight years, Violet had resided at the Bow Island Auxiliary until the time of her passing.

She will be sadly missed by her children including a son, Murice (Ursula) Haskill and their family, Brett (Michele) - Matthew and Dylan, Scott (Bob), Robin (Brenda) - Michael, and Daniel; a son, Curtis Haskill and his children, Karissa Haskill - Logan, Nicholas (Holly) and Tyler (Victoria); a daughter, Julie (Brian) Fode and their children, Chris (Tanya) Keeler - Heather and Zenon, Joel (Lisa) Keeler - Raine; a brother-in-law, Ron Geldreich and his family as well as special family member, Justine (Wayne) Ulmer and their family. Violet was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Yvonne Egan; first husband, Bill Haskill; second husband, George (Jack) Thomas; a grandson in infancy, Mark and a sister, Doreen Geldreich.

The death of Chester Sidney Agar, aged 34 years, 3 months and 5 days, took place at the General Hospital yesterday. deceased was the son of Sidney S. Agar, 130 St. Clair Street, and had been working on his father's farm in the country.

Mr. Agar had been ailing for only a few days with peritonitis, to which he succumbed. He is survived by his wife and three young children, also his parents and one brother in the west.

Norma A. Rivest, age 83, of Ovid, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008.

Norma was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Elsie, the daughter of Ward and Agatha (Andersen) Lewis. On June 18, 1944, she married Max Rivest in Elsie. He preceded her in death Oct. 21, 2001. She was the past village of Ovid treasurer and member of the Hiawatha Sportsman's Club.

Survivors include her children, Pat Rivest of Ovid, Connie Jones of Elsie, Gary (Debbie) Rivest of Corunna and Barry Rivest of Ovid; grandchildren Jamie Jones, Jim Jones II, Jennifer (Tim) Jones, Kathryn Rivest, Jason Rivest and Andrew Rivest; great-grandchildren Sydney Jones, Claudia Jones and Olivia Rivest.

ln addition to her husband, Max, she was preceded in death by brother Donald Lewis and sister Pauline Roof.
