May 29, 2009Edna M. Greenler, 96, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Community Care of Monmouth.
She was born March 21, 1913, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Fred G. and Dora Kaehlert Tholen. She married George A. Greenler on Feb. 12, 1938, in Jacksonville, and he preceded her in death Jan. 23, 1995.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan (husband, Mike) McKee of Monmouth; two granddaughters, Denise (husband, Pat) Mascari of Naperville and Kimberly (husband, Jack) Chenault of Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; three great-grandsons; one sister, Esther Morrison of Jacksonville; and one brother, Raymond Tholen of Pleasant Plains. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lorna Treutle.
Mrs. Greenler was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and Passavant School of Nursing. Upon graduation, she worked as a registered nurse at Passavant Area Hospital, then for the Corpus Christi (Texas) Health Deptartment during World War II. After the war, she returned to Jacksonville, working at the Morgan County Health Department. In 1947, she began working at Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where she also belonged to the Ladies Aid Group.

November 17, 1947John H. Dunham, aged 68, died at his home, 1422 South Dodge, Monday morning.
He was born June 3, 1879, at Bluffs, Illinois.
He had been working as maintenance man at the Davis Manufacturing company. He came to Wichita from Bluffs about 1900 and worked for the Blood orchards. During his early years here he helped lay the Orient railroad into Oklahoma. Turning to agriculture, he later farmed in this area for a good many years.
Mrs. Dunham preceded him in death in 1944.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Elzada Schreffler, 1321 South Vine; two sons, John, 138 North St. Paul; Francis, 1422 South Dodge; three sisters, Mrs. Dora Seaman, Bluffs, Ill.; Mrs. Carrie Johnson, Chicago; Mrs. Sadie Mills, Couer d'Alene, Ida., and five brothers, William, Jacksonville, Ill.; Ralph, Peoria; Roy, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Arch, Lakeland, Fla., and George, Bluffs, Ill. Five grandchidnn also survive.

March 31, 1944Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Dunham, 55, died last night at her home, 142 South Dodge. Born at Haysville August 4, 1888, Mrs. Dunham has lived in this community all her life. Her parents homesteaded four miles south of Wichita and one-half mile east of Broadway. She was a member of the Methodist church at Haysville.
Survivors are her husband, John H. Dunham; one daughter, Mrs. Elzada Schreffler, 1321 South Vine; two sons, John, in the navy, and Francis, 2525 South Mosley; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Benner, Rural Route No. 6 and Mrs. Bessie Carlson, 638 North Market, and two brothers, Lee Morgan, 235 North Sabin, and Jess Morgan, 301 Baehr.

November 5, 2009DUNHAM, ANNE "MARGUERITE" HASSON, 95, passed away November 2, 2009. She was born in Aliceville, Alabama and grew up in Texarkana, Arkansas. She attended the University of Alabama where she met her husband to be, "Jones" Joseph Dunham of Tuscaloosa. They were married in November 1934. Marguerite was devoted to Jones for 48 years, until his death in May 1982.
Marguerite loved Birmingham. As a longtime member of South Highland Presbyterian Church, she was an active participant in the Presbyterian Women and supported the Church's mission and ideals. Supporting disabled veterans and higher education were charitable causes close to her heart.
She was a 50 year member of the P.E.O. sisterhood, an organization dedicated to providing a college education to deserving young women. She was also a 50 year member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the General Sumter Chapter, an organization that perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence. She served as a Press Page at D.A.R.'s 61st Continental Congress.
Active in the community, Marguerite believed in preserving its history. She was a member of the Arlington Historical Association and the Birmingham - Jefferson Historical Society; organizations that strive to preserve the rich legacy and history of the Birmingham - Jefferson area. She was also a member of the Dogwood Garden Club, several bridge clubs, a supper club, the Study Club and the Hob-Lit Club. For many years she attended and supported the Alabama Symphony.
Her knowledge and perspective of the world were broadened by the reading and traveling she enjoyed so much. She was an avid reader of historical fiction, famous biographies and autobiographies. And, she had a passion for traveling, especially to England. In 1977 she traveled the globe aboard the Queen Elizabeth II with her husband, Jones.
Mrs. Dunham was predeceased by her parents, Yolande Cornelius Hasson and James Earnest Hasson; her brother, James Richard Hasson and her beloved husband, Jones.
She is survived by her son, Jones Charles "Chuck" Dunham, his wife, Mary, more a daughter than a daughter-in-law, of Birmingham and three grandchildren, Maleah Margaret Dunham of Birmingham, Jonathan Charles Dunham of Memphis and John Christopher "Goose" Dunham of Birmingham.
Marguerite will be forever remembered for her loving, gracious nature with family and friends.

June 22, 2003DUNHAM, WILLIAM KING, age 88, of Birmingham died at home on Friday, June 20, 2003. Born August 15, 1914 in Beardstown, Illinois, W.H. (Billy) Dunham's childhood was spent in Tuscaloosa and Abbeville, Alabama.
He graduated from Abbeville High School and received his B.S. from the University of Alabama. He served in the US Navy in WWII in the South Pacific and also in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Dunham spent many meaningful days with his three sons and grandsons sharing with them his love of the southern outdoors hunting, fishing and appreciating the wonder of God's created world. He was a longtime member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Homewood; First Baptist Church of Birmingham and, in his later years, he was an elder at the Montevallo Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Hendrik Hudson Post of the American Legion in Birmingham, a member of the Birmingham Transportation Club, and was a charter member of Green Valley Country Club in Hoover.
Following his military service, Mr. Dunham went into business with his brother to form Dunham GMC in Birmingham, which prospered and was a fixture among automotive businesses in the city for 34 years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy E. Dunham; mother, Edria Jones Dunham; wife of 48 years, Lorena Hall Dunham; sister, Myra Dunham Jewett; and brothers, Roy E Dunham, Jr.and Jones J. Dunham.

March 20, 2015Theda Wyatt Nordan Dunham, 93, of Birmingham died on March 19, 2015.
A longtime resident of Montevallo, AL, Theda spent the final years of her life at Covenant Place Assisted Living in Gardendale, AL.
Born in Clanton in Chilton County on March 28, 1921, she attended public school there through the ninth grade and then moved to Montevallo with her family in 1935. She graduated from Montevallo High School in 1938 and went on to earn a B.S. degree from Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo) in 1942. While in college, she was a campus beauty and participated in creative dance and the annual College Night competition. While a student, she was employed for three years as student secretary in the Executive Secretary's office at Alabama College. During the summer of 1941, she worked as secretary to Dr. A.F. Harman, president of the college. After graduation, Theda was employed as the confidential secretary to Mr. Hugh White, President of the Alabama Public Service Commission in Montgomery.
In September of 1942, she married Clayton O. Nordan, Lt. U.S. Army of Abbeville, AL.
During the war years she lived with her husband in Tullahoma, TN (Camp Forrest); Sparta, WI (Camp McCoy); Manhattan, KS (Ft. Riley); and Fayetteville, NC (Ft. Bragg). She returned to Montevallo in 1943 when Mr. Nordan was assigned to duty in the European Theatre. From 1945 until 1946, she was employed at Alabama College as Executive Secretary. Following Mr. Nordan's discharge from the service, he and Theda settled in Montevallo and established Nordan Hardware Co. and had three children. From 1947-1948 Theda worked as secretary to Alabama College President John T. Caldwell, and from 1950-1951 as secretary to Dr. M.L. Orr, Sr., Head of the Department of Education. From 1951 to 1953, Theda was the secretary and accountant, and was in charge of tenant selection for the Housing Authority of the Town of Montevallo. At the same time, she worked as bookkeeper for her husband's hardware business. In 1953, she was employed as secretary to R.E. Ballantine, the manager of the Westinghouse plant recently constructed on the outskirts of town. She remained there until 1958 when she resigned to become editor and bookkeeper of Times Printing Co. and The Shelby County Times Herald (Montevallo), which was owned and published by her father, W.M. "Mack" Wyatt. For a short time, Theda was also an instructor in Business Administration and Short-Hand at Alabama College. In 1960, Theda was hired as secretary to M.S. McGehee, manager of the Alabama Power Co. district office in Montevallo. The remainder of her working life was spent with Alabama Power until 1983 when she retired as a Senior General Clerk.
After Mr. Nordan's death in 1986, Theda married William K. Dunham of Birmingham in 1990. He preceded her in death in 2003. Others preceding her in death were her parents, W.M. Wyatt and Vedie R. Wyatt, Montevallo; her brothers, James A. Wyatt, Spring Hill, FL and William P. Wyatt, Montevallo; daughters, Barbara Jan Nordan, Montevallo and Judy Nordan Trotter, Calera.
Theda was a dedicated member of the Montevallo Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Treasurer, and Trustee. She was a member of the Montevallo Study Club, the Yomaso Club, the Montevallo PTA, the Swim Club, and the New Horizons Club. She was also an active and generous supporter of the Parnell Memorial Library in Montevallo. Theda was a loyal alumnus and supporter of the University of Montevallo all her life. In retirement, Theda remained active in the community for many years and also traveled extensively to destinations around the world. She will be remembered by family and friends as being totally devoted to others and as someone always ready to sacrifice her own interests and comfort for the good of those around her.

July 26, 2002MYRA DUNHAM JEWETT passed away July 24, 2002 in Denver, Colorado.
Myra was born on August 20, 1916 to Edria and Roy Dunham in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Alabama. She earned a Master's Degree from Columbia Teacher's College in New York City and taught English at Howard University.
Myra moved to Houston in 1942 to become the Director of Christian Education at Trinity Episcopal Church. Shortly thereafter, she met her loving husband, Bob Jewett, to whom she was married for more than 52 years. She greatly enjoyed her friends and membership in the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross. Throughout her life she had a deep appreciation of nature, and loved to watch the sunset at her farm with family and friends after a long day in the garden. She loved all plants and flowers, and also had a lifetime passion for literature and poetry.
Myra is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert K. Jewett, and her brothers Jones Dunham and Roy Dunham.
She is survived by her children Dunham and Jill Jewett of Houston, Jan and John Douglas of Denver, Colorado, and Lynne Smith and Martha Ward of New Braunfels; her grandchildren Ryan, Sarah and William Jewett, Mira Eklund, Peter, Alice and Jack Douglas, and Hart Smith; her brother and sister-in-law William K. and Theda Dunham of Birmingham, Alabama; and her sister-in-law Marguerite Dunham, also of Birmingham.

February 11, 2013Birmingham, AL - Jane Cameron Dunham, age 92, long-time resident of Birmingham, AL, passed away after a short illness on February 7, 2013. Born in Worcester, MA Jane grew up on Maple Street in West Boylston, MA where she graduated from Major Edwards High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Dunham, Jr. of Birmingham and her parents, Margaret Vallance Cameron and Hugh Cameron of West Boylston, MA, as well as her brothers, Ronald Hugh Cameron of West Boylston and her brother, Andrew Cameron of South Attleboro, MA. Jane is survived by nieces and nephews spread across the country.
Jane is a Veteran of World War II, proudly serving as a sergeant in the Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged from the military, Jane spent her working career with Traveler's Insurance Company, before finally retiring with over thirty years of service. She enjoyed bowling, often being involved in multiple leagues at once. She traveled the country during her retirement years bowling competitively and she bowled into her 90s. Jane also liked traveling abroad and loved dogs.

Marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served in Army Air Force for four years during World War II. Worked at Elliots Stake Bank in Jacksonville, Illinois prior to his retirement. Member of the LDS church. He enjoyed his family, mountains and his horses very much. Life member of V.F.W. Post 9276.
Survived by his wife, of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, a son, Kay Givan and Shirley Chapman, both Provo; Russell Seeman, Aurora, Colorado; 18 grandchildren, sisters, Dorothy Schroeder, Peoria, Illinois; Bess Hayes, Jacksonville, Illinois, three nieces and three nephews.

February 18, 2016Bess Hayes, 95, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at Prairie Village Healthcare in Jacksonville.
She was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Bluffs, the daughter of Elmer Francis and Dona Pearl Dunham Seeman. She married Albert Ray Hayes on Aug. 19, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1966.
Bess is survived by four children, Stanley (Sue) Hayes and Karen Hayes, both of Jacksonville, Janet (Rick) Whalen of Franklin, and Brent Hayes of Springfield; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Nancy Louise Hayes; one sister, Dorothy M. Schroeder; and one brother, Harold Francis Seeman.
Bess was a cook at the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville for many years. She was previously employed at MacMurray College. Bess was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church and enjoyed sewing, cooking, and helping others. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Health setbacks eventually led to Bess moving to Prairie Village, where she became active within that community and made special friends with both the residents and caregivers.

She was born Aug. 20, 1923, in Bluffs, Ill., to Elmer F. and Dona P. (Dunham) Seeman. She married Edwin J. Schroeder on Aug. 18, 1946, in Bluffs, Ill. He died Dec. 31, 2011, in Peoria.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harold.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda (Bill) Gauwitz of Metamora; son, William "Bill" (Vicki) Schroeder of Dunlap; granddaughter, Christine of Peoria; grandson, Michael of Las Vegas; grandson, Jeff (Sydni) of Washington; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Bess Hayes of Jacksonville, Ill.; sister-in-law, Margaret Schroeder of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews.
She worked as a registered nurse for Proctor Hospital in Peoria, last working as a registered nurse for Dr. William Campbell in Peoria Heights for over 30 years.
Dorothy was a member of Grace and Peace Lutheran Church in Peoria, where she was active in Martha's Circle. She also was a past member of American Legion Auxiliary.

January 3, 2012PEORIA HEIGHTS - Edwin "Ed" Schroeder, 90, a longtime resident of Peoria Heights, passed away at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at Lutheran Hillside Village.
Born April 3, 1921, in Virginia, Ill., a son of William and Emma Jorden Schroeder, Ed married Dorothy M. Seeman on Aug. 18, 1946, in Bluffs, Ill. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Linda (Bill) Gauwitz of Metamora; one son, Bill (Vicki) Schroeder of Dunlap; three grandchildren, Chris Anello of Pekin, Mike Gauwitz of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jeff Gauwitz of Washington; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Ed was preceded in death by three brothers, Herb, Lloyd and Alfred "Skip."
He was a WWII Army Air Forces veteran and a lifetime member of VFW Post 2602. He was also a member of the American Legion Peoria Post 2 and AMVETS Post 64.
Ed worked for the U.S. Post Office, retiring as a postal clerk in 1978.

Ellen M. Betassa, 82, of Ellensburg passed away Sunday, May 6, 2001 at Royal Vista Care Center in Ellensburg. She was born in Bluffs, Ill. on May 31, 1918, the first child of Croney D. Mills and Sadie (Dunham) Mills.
Her parents and Ellen moved to North Dakota in 1920 and she graduated from high school in Wahpeton, N.D. in 1936. The family moved to Ellensburg later that year.
Ellen married Bert Betassa in 1937. For the next several years, Ellen and Bert traveled as Bert worked as an operating engineer on heavy construction jobs throughout the Northwest. Ellen and Bert operated Bert?s Laundry Ease on Columbia Street from 1949 to 1973 when they retired. They enjoyed many years of fishing together, gathering mushrooms and picking huckleberries. In her spare time, Ellen liked to crotchet and do other crafts.

She loved to tell of her service to the US Navy's WWII efforts, working at the Johnsville Naval Air Station where she met her husband. She found it ironic that the very site where they met would years later house the facility to which she retired, after his passing. She enjoyed writing poetry and listening to music; learning to play both the organ and the guitar, later in life. She will be remembered for her generous ways, her caring nature and her unconditional love for her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.

She was born on October 13, 1927 in Barney, North Dakota to Croney and Sadie Mills. They moved to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho in 1937. Marian graduated from high school in 1945 in Coeur D'Alene.
Marian and Vincent J. Rogers were united in marriage in 1960. They celebrated 48 wonderful years of marriage. Marian retired in 1988 from Federal Court after 27 years of employment. Marian and Vincent spent many years traveling in their motor home and sightseeing on mountain roads always looking over the next hill.
Marian was preceded in death by her Mom and Dad, Croney and Sadie, brother, Dan and Sister, Ellen.
Marian is survived by her husband Vincent; nephew Danny; two nieces Denise (John) Tocydlowski and Danalle (Ed) Van Cestendal; and seven great nieces and nephews, all from Pennsylvania.

He was born January 1, 1927 at Gold Creek, MT to John and Marguerite Rogers. He was the fifth of eight children. He attended school in Gold Creek and graduated from Powell County High School in Deer Lodge, MT.
He married Marian Mills in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in 1960. Marian predeceased him in 2008 after celebrating 48 years of marriage.
Vincent was a carpenter by trade. Vincent and Marian spent many years traveling in their motorhome. They loved going for a ride in the mountains and picking huckleberries.
Vincent was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, sisters, Josephine Mehr and Frances Lange, brothers, Albert, George and Tony. Vincent is survived by sisters, Veronica Rabel and Teresa Smith and many, many nieces and nephews.
