UNUM RETIREES NEWS
The Ninth Edition
July 2012We heard from Roger Haskell, Lyman Haskell's son, that Lyman passed away on September 17, 2011. On July 15, 2011, his 96th birthday, he experienced an intestinal blockage. It was corrected surgically, but due to his age and other factors he was in the hospital for two weeks and in rehab for two more, and never regained enough strength to return to his assisted living status. He spent a month in Roger's home, and then went to VNA Hospice for a few days until he died.
Born near Gainsville FL in 1915, he was graduated from the University of Florida in 1937 after lettering in swimming for four years. He married Margaret Sinkinson, on August 23, 1940.
Lyman served in the U. S. Army in Europe during WWII, earning a Bronze Star and other medals, and being retired from the Army Reserve after the war as Lieutenant Colonel.
He worked briefly for Shawmut Bank in Boston, and later joined Union Mutual Life Insurance Company in Portland, where he worked until 1975.
After Margaret's death in 1977 Lyman married Enid McCarthy, with whom he lived until her death in 2004. Until 1999 when he became unable to get around well, he spent his retirement between Florida in the winter and Chebeague Island, Maine in the summer. He spoke fondly of his years at Union Mutual (that dates him if nothing else does) and of the people with whom he worked.
