The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Kendall Sturtevant Reed (NSN: 0-20264), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the line of his profession while in command of the U.S.S. OAKLAND (CL-95), during the attacks against Palau 6 September 1944, against Mindanao and Visayas 9 through 14 September 9144, against Luzon on 21 - 22 September 1944, and against Nansei Shoto and Formosa 6 through 14 October 1944. During three particularly vicious and sustained enemy air attacks he kept his ship firing with such accuracy and in such powerful volume as to provide a telling factor in repulsing the attacks without damage to the Task Group. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
