TOWNSEND - Laura E. (Downing) Beers, 85, formerly of Elm Street Center, died Monday in Birchwood Care Center, Fitchburg, after a long illness.

Her husband, Charles A. Beers, died in 1964. She leaves two sons, Charles A. Beers and David A. Beers, both of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; a sister, Ainslee G. Goodridge of Wilton, N.H.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Born in Ayer, daughter of Herbert and Stella G. (Stratton) Downing, she lived here many years before moving to the nursing home in 1985.

She was a member of Townsend Methodist Church and its Ladies Benevolent Society.

WILTON, N.H. - Ainslee G. (Downing) Goodridge, 87, of 117 Badger Farm Road, formerly of 57 Winter St., Fitchburg, Mass., a retired nurse, died Monday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Nashua, after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 30 years, Edwin D. Goodridge; nephews and nieces. Her first husband, Robert A. Goodridge, died in 1965; and a sister, Laura Beers of Townsend, Mass., died in 1997. Born in Ayer, Mass., daughter of Henry A. and Stella G. (Stratton) Downing, she graduated from Henry Heywood Memorial School of Nursing in Gardner, Mass.

A registered nurse for more than 40 years, Mrs. Goodridge retired from Mount Elam Nursing Home, now Mariner Health Care in Fitchburg. She attended Highland Baptist Church, Fitchburg. She was a member of the Henry Heywood Memorial School of Nursing Alumni Association.


Edwin D. Goodridge

Edwin D. Goodridge, 86, formerly of Lawrence St. and Badger Farm Road, Wilton, died Aug. 28, 2003, in Health-Alliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.

He was born in Fitchburg, Mass., on June 22, 1917, the son of Alanzo and Mary (Miller) Goodridge. He was raised there, moving to Wilton in 1969, and returning to Fitchburg in April 2003.

Mr. Goodridge was an Army veteran of World War II and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge in the Rhineland, Germany, and the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. He was a tank commander and recipient of the Drivers Badge, Bronze Service Arrow Head, European, African, Middleastern Theaters with four stars, and the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.

He retired in 1979 after 25 years of service for the former Webber Lumber Company of Fitchburg as a yard foreman. Mr. Goodridge was a member of St. Bernard’s Church and the Teamsters Union 170. He enjoyed electronics and worked with cars, TVs and radios.

Mr. Goodridge is pre-deceased by his wife of 30 years, Ainslee G. (Downing) Goodridge, who died June 14, 1999; and three brothers, David H., Richard M. and Robert Goodridge.

He leaves two nieces, Ellen Brideau of Fitchburg, and Judith LeClair of Ashburnham; one nephew, David Goodridge of Fitchburg; three grandnieces; one great-grandnephew; and two great-grandnieces.
