August 27, 2000MERTIE A. DeVOLL, 97, of Indian Run Village, a retired employee of the Larchwood Inn, Wakefield, died yesterday at Scallop Shell Nursing Home, Peace Dale.
She was the wife of the late Millard DeVoll. Born in North Kingstown, a daughter of the late William Dow and Mertie A. (Potter) Johnson, she was a lifelong South County resident. Mrs. DeVoll had also worked at the Peace Dale Mill for several years.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for 67 years.
She leaves a granddaughter, Joyce A. Holland of Narragansett, and a grandson, Brian P. Martin of Apollo Beach, Fla.; a brother, Eugene P. Dow of Saunderstown; two sisters, Nellie A. Briggs of West Kingston and Charlotte Crowell of Warwick; four great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson. She was the mother of the late Doris E. Beck and sister of the late William D. Dow and Laura E. Brown.

DEBARY - Charlotte Crowell, 80, of River Drive, a former manager for Dunkin' Donuts, Warwick, R.I., died Thursday at home.
Mrs. Crowell moved to this area in 2003 from Rhode Island. She was a member of Community United Methodist Church of DeBary.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Patterson, Haines City, and Everett and Stephen Hunt, both of Rhode Island; a daughter, Elizabeth Vihlen, DeBary; a stepson, David Crowell, Rhode Island; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Eben F. Haskell was a seaman.
Arnold Olsen Haskell was a banker. He lived in Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts.

October 29, 2014ST. PETERSBURG - Avis J. Haskell passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 98 in St. Petersburg, Florida on October 23, 2014.
She was born in Massachusetts, the daughter of Harold and Leona Johnson, and the sister of Harold "Jerry" Johnson Jr. who have since predeceased her.
Avis fondly recalled spending many happy childhood summers on Vinalhaven, Maine. Following her high school graduation, she won the Golden Voice of New England and received a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music.
She was employed as a jewelry buyer in Boston for several years, and was active in local theater groups, where she met and married her husband Arnold O. Haskell of 37 years. They raised two children in Quincy, and returned to Deer Isle, Maine every summer for vacation beginning in 1946. Avis sang in the Hough's Neck Congregational Church choir, taught Sunday School, was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years, and taught evening adult ball point painting classes for 5 years in 5 Massachusetts schools.
She and Arnold moved back to his boyhood home of Deer Isle in 1971 upon his retirement. Widowed in 1983, she moved to Florida to care for her mother. In St. Pete she continued performing in operas, dinner theaters, and musicals. An avid ballroom dancer, Avis volunteered for many years at the Coliseum Big Band Dances. She returned every summer to Deer Isle until 2007. Avis will be especially remembered for her infectious optimism and generous heart. Many may remember her seemingly endless energy, and too many activities to list.
She is survived by daughter Val Haskell of California, son Mark Haskell of Florida, nephews Hal and Bob Johnson of Texas, and niece Susan Molino of Arizona.
Burial will be at Hillside Cemetary in Sunset, Maine.
Miles Brown served in Italy and France in WW2. He was a carpenter and caretaker on Deer Isle.

Madolyn Ella Thompson, 93, housewife, died Saturday, November 25, 2000 at Sunbridge of N. Reading in Wilmington, .
She was born March 19, 1907 in Deer Island, Maine the daughter of Martin and Mabel (Grey) Greene.
Madylyn came to Everett at an early age, and attended the Everett School system. For at time she worked at Thompsons Spa, where she worked as a casheir and wrapped pastries. After her marraige to Milton Thompson, she resided in Malden where they raised their close knit family. After Miltons retirement, they moved to Plaistow NH. They grew vegatables on their farm, and were active the the church social scene. Madolyn also enjoyed planting flowers, knitting, embroidering, and making afghans.
She is survived by daughters Beverly Mc Millen of Malden, Mary Osterholt of Malden, Helene Sawyer of Lynn, and son, Bradley Thompson, and brothers Kenneth Greene of Everett, Victor Greene of Lynn.
She was preceded in death by her husband Milton, her father Martin Greene, her mother Mabel Grey, her brothers Arthur Greene, Thomas Greene, Donald Greene, and Martin Greene.
