September 26, 2008Uteva Edna Powers, 87, died Wednesday Sept. 24, 2008.
Family members provided some of the following information.
Uteva died peacefully at her home in Manhattan. She was born on July 17, 1921 in Leonardville, the daughter of Lorenz G. and Miriam Ann (Lewis) Pfeffer. The family moved to Walsenberg, Colo., but returned to Riley, where she graduated from Fairview Elementary School and Riley Rural High Schoo
Uteva attended business school in Manhattan. She was united in marriage to Felix Powers on Oct. 5, 1941. She mothered four children and worked part-time at various jobs, but found her calling when she started taking classes at K-State and decided to major in journalism.
She took her first class in the Spring of 1966 and graduated in May of 1977. She worked for the Manhattan Mercury as area editor and contributing writer and most recently as Senior Page editor.
Uteva and Felix were avid travelers. They traveled to every state in the Union and drove the Alaska Highway twice. The "big one" was their 1982 trip to New Zealand and Australia which, included stops in England, Hawaii and Tahiti.
Spirituality was an important part of Uteva's life. In her spiritual journey, she belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Blue Valley United Methodist Church, and for the past 20 years, the Unity Church of Manhattan. Uteva, Felix and daughter Liz were active in Manhattan Civic Theater. Uteva was also very involved in her community Home Extension Group.
Uteva was preceded in death by her parents; her son: Paul Powers on May 7, 1998; her husband Felix on Nov. 2, 1999; her daughter: Liz Powers Wilderson on March 12, 2001 and her sister: Delora Dallinga on Oct. 11, 1991.
She is survived by her son John Powers and his wife Martha of Wamego, Kansas; her daughter: Sharon Powers of Independence, Missouri; two brothers: Lewis Pfeffer of Hacienda Heights, Calif., and Ivan Pfeffer of Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters: Elaine Baer of Riley, and Sarah Simmons of Hemet, Calif.; her daughter-in-law: Susan Powers of Fayetteville, Ga.; her son-in-law: Robert Wilderson of Corvallis, Ore.; six grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
Samuel Lowe was a farmer.
Jonathan Torrey was a fisherman (1870 Deer Isle Census). He is listed as a farmer at age 74 in the 1920 Federal Census for Deer Isle. He served in the US Navy during the Civil War.
Moody Barrett Powers was a sailor (1850 Census, Deer Isle, Maine).

George Washington Holden was a fisherman according to the 1860 Deer Isle census. In the 1870 census he is listed as a "book agent" and the Deer Isle town records lists him as a teacher in November 1900 at age 70.
