MILLBURY - Ruth W. (Flewelling) Hall, 88, of the Millbury Convalescent Center, 5 Rhodes St., died Wednesday in her home.

Her husband, Arthur Hall died many years ago.

She leaves a son, Robert Hall of Nevada, and a daughter, Audrey Hall.

Born in New York, daughter of Stanley and Bessie (Paslow) Flewelling, she lived several years in Millbury.

Memorial services for Charlotte V. ''Ginny'' Flewelling, 65, of 315 Westholm Blvd., Geddes, who died Sunday at her home, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Camillus. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery.

A native of Kansas City, Kan., Mrs. Flewelling also lived in Boston before moving to Syracuse in 1950. She lived in Geddes 35 years. She retired in 1985 from Warners Elementary School after 25 years as a librarian with the West Genesee school district. Mrs. Flewelling began her career as a sixth-grade teacher at Split Rock Elementary School. She continued after her retirement as a substitute librarian until 1989.

Mrs. Flewelling was a 1945 graduate of Kansas University. After graduation, she became a stewardess with Mid-Continent Airlines and later was a secretary with M.I.T. in Boston. Mrs. Flewelling earned her master's degree in from Syracuse University.

Mrs. Flewelling was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Onondaga County Retired Librarians Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was active in the Elderhostel program. She also was member of Theta Kappa Alpha sorority and the West Hill Country Club.

Surviving are three daughters, Joan Attwood of Flagstaff, Ariz., Laurie Flewelling of Geddes and Diane Helmstetter of Wurtzburg, Germany; a son, Douglas of Camillus; two sisters, Alice Clarkson and Margaret Morgan, both of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


John D. Barr

John D. Barr, former prominent resident of Elizabeth, died Saturday (March 16, 1940) at his home, 197 Elm Street. He was the only Republican ever elected to the Elizabeth City Council from the First Ward.

Mr. Barr was born in Scotland and came to this country with his parents when he was 8 years old, about the time that the Singer Manufacturing Co. was removing its plant from Glasgow to Elizabeth. He was employed nearly all his life with the Singer Co., serving as a department head at his retirement about ten years ago. He lived here about twenty years.

In Elizabeth, he was elected to the City Council as a Republican from the First Ward and served from July 2, 1894 to June 30, 1896, holding the position of president of the City Council. Active in the affairs of the Aleyone Boat Club, he served many years as its president. He was a member of Tyrian Lodge, F. & A.M., of Elizabeth, and of the Singer Veterans' Association.

There are no immediate survivors. His wife Luella Bennett Barr, died about two years ago.

EAST KINGSTON -- Marjorie Tice Rowell, 82, of Main Street, died April 4, 2005, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Jean (Waldron) and Dewees F. Tice, and was raised in Melrose and Brookline, Mass.

She was a 1940 graduate of Brookline High School, and a 1941 graduate of the Katherine Gibbs School. She lived in the Boston area for many years before moving to East Kingston in 1976. From 1967 to 1983, she was comptroller for Park School in Brookline, Mass.

In addition, she managed accounts for many years for Church of Our Savior in Brookline. She was also a trustee of East Kingston Library. Mrs. Rowell enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, big band jazz, and the blues.

Family members include her husband, Nathaniel B. Rowell of East Kingston; a brother, B. Kent Tice of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Emily S. Burr of Manchester and Alison H. Burr of Windsor, Conn.; a son, Sturtevant T. Burr of Newton, Mass.; four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Sturtevant Burr, of Brookline, Mass.

John H. Somers, of 30 Newberry Lane, Glastonbury, CT, died Thursday (July 1, 2010).
Born in Marion, MA on December 14, 1925, son of Reverend Laurence Drew Somers and Olive Hiller Somers.

A resident of Glastonbury, CT, previously of Mystic, CT for many years. He saw action in the Pacific, in the US Marine Corps, during World War II.

He was the territory manager, in New England, for Cincinnati Milacron for over twenty-seven years, retiring in Mystic. There, he was on staff at the planetarium at the Mystic Seaport Museum where he lectured. He also served on the advisory board of the New London Salvation Army.

For over ten years, he was the Connecticut State Historian for the Society of Mayflower Descendants. He had two Mayflower descendants: Richard Warren and William Brewster. He was a member of Buckingham Congregational Church in Glastonbury.

He married Dorothy Newbold in 1950 and has two daughters: Linda Somers of Glastonbury and Karen Williams of Keene, NH. There are four grandchildren. He had a sister: Miriam Duris of NC, two brothers, Henry Somers of Manasquam, NJ, David Delano Somers of Rochester, NY.

He was a member of the Masons, Daskam-Columbia Lodge #25 of South Glastonbury.

Dorothy Olivia Somers, 93, of Glastonbury, died Tuesday, October 7, 2014. She was born July 25, 1921 in Boston, MA to the late William and Stella (Simmonson) Newbold.

The beloved wife of the late John H. Somers for 60 years, she was a resident of Mystic before moving to Glastonbury. Dorothy was a devoted mother who cared deeply for her children and adored her grandchildren. Graduating from Somerville High School in MA, Dorothy married John in 1950.

She is survived by their 2 daughters, Linda Somers and her husband Herman McKeever of Glastonbury, and Karen Williams and her husband John of Keene, NH. Dorothy is also survived by her four grandchildren, Jack J. Williams, Emily D. Andrukaitis, Kara Somers McKeever, and Amy Somers McKeever. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard Newbold, and her sister, Beatrice Sbraccia.

Jane W. (Whitcomb) Leslie, 88, a 47 year resident of Sterling, died peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2013 under the loving care of her family and the staff at Sterling Village in Sterling.
Jane was born and raised in West Boylston, the daughter of Ralph Oswald and Alta M. (Walker) Whitcomb and was a direct descendent of West Boylston's town founder, Ezra Beaman. Jane graduated from West Boylston High School and was an operator at New England Telephone for over 30 years, retiring in 1986.

She was predeceased by her husband, James F. Leslie, who passed away in 1955 and by her son, James R. Leslie, who passed away in 2002.

Jane is survived by her daughter, Diane Leslie of Shrewsbury; a sister, June Marvin of Sarasota, FL; nieces and nephews, including her niece and caregiver, Loret R.W. Schur of Sterling; and her dear friend, Leon "Woody" Woodcock of Sterling. Three brothers, Edgar A., Ralph O. and Lorenz E. Whitcomb and a sister, Jacquelyn Dolan, predeceased her.

Mrs. Helen Gertrude Fournier passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Master's Health Care Center in Algood.

Mrs. Fournier was born December 13, 1920 in Roxbury MA to the late James Leslie and Gertrude Delano Leslie. She was retired as a customer service representative from the Sears Corporation.

Helen is survived by one daughter, Doris "Dody" Quinn (husband Richard) of Leominster MA; three grandchildren, Marie Murphy (husband Murf) of Quebeck TN, Teresa Hart (husband Robert) of Sparta TN and Pamela Girouard also of Sparta. In addition Mrs. Fournier is survived by nine great grandchildren; William Measles (Kristie) of NY, Jessica Prater (Justin) of Sparta TN, John Hart also of Sparta, Brian Hart (Erica) U.S. Navy, Neal Hart, Matthew Cimino, Rodney Cimino, Michael Cimino and Nicole Cimino, all of Sparta. She is also survived by twelve great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Charles Fournier, one son Joseph Charles "Rusty" Fournier Jr., one brother Fredrick Leslie and a very special friend, Verna Heughan.

CHARLES CLAGHORN, III - Of Cocoa Beach,FL.

Charles Eugene Claghorn III, a retired accountant and author, died on Sunday, October 30, 2005, at age 93. He was born in Narberth, PA, on Dec.12th,1911.

Graduated from Pierce college in Philadelphia and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Mr. Claghorn was an accountant for the Interpublic Group in New York City. A resident of Riverside, CT. since 1950, he moved to Cocoa Beach, FL in 1978 and in 2002 to Merritt Island, FL. Gene, as he was called, was a descendent from a long line of composers and songwriters. He wrote the Biographical Dictionary of American Musicians and Composers and the Dictionary of Jazz and books on the American Revolution. His first book, The Mocking Bird, was reviewed in the TIME magazine on May 24, 1937. Gene was the author of many other musical and historical books. He was a past president of Brevard Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and past National Governor of the Honorable Artillery Company, USA - a hereditary society. A member of the Optimist Club. He was also a member of the Society of Cincinnati, Founders and Patriots, the Colonial Society of Pennsylvania.

His loving wife of 63 years, Eileen, survives him with their two sons, LT. Col. Charles of North Las Vegas, NV and Thomas of Milford, CT. Granddaughters, Melissa Smith and husband Clark of Rapid City, SD and Jennifer of Henderson, NV; two great-grandchildren, Colten and Kylee Smith of Rapid City, SD; and a brother, Donald of Vero Beach, FL.

Eileen A. Claghorn, 89, a homemaker, of North Las Vegas, passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008.

She was born March 6, 1919, in Cookstown, Northern Ireland.

She graduated in 1937 from Lower Marion High School in Ardmore, Pa., raised her family in Greenwich, Conn., and later retired with her husband, Charles, in Coco Beach, Fla. Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, of 64 years, Charles E. Claghorn III.

She is survived by her sons, LTC. Charles E. (Holly) Claghorn IV of North Las Vegas, and Thomas S. Claghorn of Milford, Conn.; granddaughters, Melissa Smith of Box Elder, S.D., and Jennifer Claghorn of Henderson; her great-grandchildren, Colten and Kylee Smith of Box Elder; and her sister, Greta Fyfe of Sunrise, Fla.

Donald Stuart Claghorn, 86, died Oct. 29, 2008, at Golden Living Center, Spring Hill, Kan.

He was born in Narberth, Pa., and lived in Spring Hill since 2007, coming from Vero Beach, where he lived 8‚½ years. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from Drexel (Institute of Technology) University with a bachelor of science in commerce. Before retiring in 1995, he owned and operated a gift and specialty shop on the boardwalk in Ocean City, N.J., for 34 years. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, founded by George Washington during the Revolutionary War. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Ethelyn; daughters, Donna Lorin of Olathe, Kan., and Patricia Lynn Plotkin of Egg Harbor City, N.J.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Allen and C. Eugene Claghorn, III.; and a grandson.
