June 18, 1996Merton B. Haskell, who with his twin brother were part owners and the operators of Skylark Airport in Lake Elsinore, died Sunday at his home. He was 82.
Mr. Haskell, of Lake Elsinore, had been ill for several years as the result of a wound he suffered during World War II, said his brother, Malcolm.
He was instrumental in rebuilding Skylark in the mid-1980s after the 150-acre airport was flooded during storms in 1980 and 1983. During the rebuilding, though, he was involved in battles with the city over the work that needed to be done.
With his twin, Mr. Haskell had operated flight schools and managed municipal airports around Southern California since the end of World War II, including the airports in Long Beach, Fullerton and Palm Springs. He co-managed Bear Creek Airport in Murrieta until a few months ago.
Mr. Haskell was born in Rockland, Maine on Sept. 18, 1918. The brothers joined the U.S. Army Air Corps at the start of World War II. While stationed in England in 1943, Merton Haskell, a glider pilot, was injured during a bombing raid on his barracks, his brother said.
Mr. Haskell also is survived by a daughter, Carole Lynn Carvalho of Suisun; and a son, Roger of Studio City.
