February 2, 1977Laura (Tapan) Safford, 87, of Belmont, a former Williamstown resident who operated a music school there, died last night in Belmont. She was the widow of Charles L. Safford, who for many years was music director and organist at Williams College.
Mrs. Safford was born May 8, 1889 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she studied at the Santa Cecelia Conservatory, winning a gold medal as a cellist. A graduate of the Institute of Musical Art in New York City, now the Julliard School of Music, she studied cello with the late Willem Willeke, and later studied with the late Mme. Schuman-Heink ans other well known voice teachers.
For many years before moving to Williamstown, she was head of the vocal department of the Hartford (Conn.) School of Music. She opened her Williamstown studio in 1948. She moved to Pittsfield in the fall of 1954, and was head of the voice department of the Pittsfield Community Music School and was a voice teacher at the former Miss Hall's School.
She leaves two sons, Charles Louis Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, and Theodore R. Safford of Falmouth, Foreside, Maine; and a daughter, Ellen S. Goodwin of West Newton.

May 19, 2005WILLIAMSTOWN -- Charles Louis Safford Jr., 85, of Cleveland, formerly of Williamstown, died April 9.
Born in New York City on Aug. 7, 1919, son of Charles Louis Safford Sr., former chairman of the Williams College music department, his family moved to Williamstown in 1929. At age 12, he saw John Philip Sousa conduct his marching band at the 40th anniversary of the Bennington (Vt.) Battle Monument. He graduated in1937 from Exeter Academy and, in 1941, from Williams College, where as bell ringer at the chapel he often played popular songs instead of hymns. He moved to Cleveland in 1946 and back to Williamstown in 1980.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was stationed in India as a cryptologist, decoding Japanese messages.
Mr. Safford was employed in the contract sales department of Halle Brothers Department Stores Co. in Cleveland, retiring in 1980.
Music was his avocation and piano playing his special talent. He was known for his ability to play any song requested. From the 1950s through the 1970s, he was musical director and accompanist for numerous groups in Cleveland, including Nisi Prius, Junior League Follies, Candlelight Theater and the Hermit Club. He also was a trustee of the Bascom Little Fund, which disperses funds to deserving music students.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir and was substitute organist. While in Cleveland, he was a member and usher of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
After returning to Williamstown, he founded and directed the bell choirs at St. Patrick's Church and at the Williamstown Youth Center.
He also was a co-founder of the college's octet and sang in its Alumni Octet throughout his life. He played piano and percussion in the Berkshire Symphony, and was archivist of the college's music department.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, the former Margery Rogers; two sons, Platt Rogers Safford and Thomas Bradbury Safford, both of Cleveland; a daughter, Esther Dean Safford of Cleveland, and eight grandchildren.

Midge was born in Denver and grew up in Cleveland. She was a graduate of Laurel School ('41) and Connecticut College. Upon retirement in 1979, Midge moved to Williamstown with her husband, Lou Safford. She recently moved back to Ohio to be near her family.
She is survived by her children, Platt, Esther and Thomas, eight grandchildren, and a sister Judith R. Collens, of Medina.

December 2, 1999Theodore Safford, 78, of Winter Street and formerly of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.
Born in New York City, a son of Charles L. and Laura Tappen Safford, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy, Williams College and Juilliard School of Music in New York.
Mr. Safford was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.
He was in broadcasting for 25 years and was employed for 10 years at the Veterans Affairs Center at Togus, retiring in 1983.
His lifelong interest was in music, singing and playing the bagpipes in several groups in New England, his family said.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Doris C. Safford of Gardiner; his son, Charles D. of Roswell, Ga.; his daughter, Leslie A. Safford of Waltham, Mass; his brother, C. Louis Jr. of Williamstown, Mass.; his sister, Ellen S. Goodwin of Amherst, Mass.; and his grandson, Zachary Schimler Safford.

She was born on April 24, 1915 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to the Rev. and Mrs. John F. Virgin.
She moved to Pittsburgh, PA and attended the PA school of Horticulture. Most of her married life was spent in Bradfordwoods, PA where she was active in many community events. She served as both the Pennsylvania and national president for the Federated Garden Clubs of America.
Elinor moved to Kennewick, WA in 1984 and became active in Basin Bloomers Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband Rutherford B. Snyder and son John R. Snyder.
Elinor is survived by her daughters Mary Shoop and Beatrice Walton and her husband Lawrence Walton. She was the beloved grandmother to 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

May 30, 2010Dr. Robert Minturn Lockwood III passed away on May 19, 2010 at Denton Presbyterian Hospital. Known as "Doc Lock" to his employees, friends, and patients, he served the community for 52 years in the practice of radiology. He was a loving father of three children.
Robert was born August 28, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA. He attended Harvard and later graduated from University of Pennsylvania Medical School. In 1956, he came to Denton, and went on to co-found the Family Radiology clinic on Scripture Street. A scholar at heart, Robert loved music, language, and the arts. He was an avid reader, fossil collector, gardener, birdwatcher, poet and playwright. His jolly personality and excellent sense of humor were beloved by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean & Esther, and his first wife, Ann.
After Ann's death, he was instrumental in establishing Ann's Haven Hospice, and served for many years at its medical director.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; his children, Ben Lockwood, Millie Lockwood, Rachel Cross and her husband John; and his granddaughter, Anna Morshedi and her husband Grant.

June 4, 1995LeROY - Merrill E. "Diz" Dean, 66, of LeRoy died at 9:06 p.m. Friday (June 2, 1995) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.
Mr. Dean was born April 11, 1929, at Mount Sinai, Ind., the son of Harry and Clara Belle Peck Dean. He married Eljean Benning April 9, 1952, at Aurora, Ind. She survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Richard and Clayton Harry, both of LeRoy; Thomas, Lexington; and Lynn, Champaign; three daughters, Catherine Frasor, Lexington; Julie Exum, Torrance, Calif.; and Cheryl Shepherd, Bloomington; one brother, Harry Dean, Aurora, Ind.; two sisters, Marge Waldon, Aurora, Ind.; and Delores Strunk, Lawrenceberg, Ind.; and 12 grandchildren.
One brother preceded him in death.
He farmed in the Anchor and LeRoy area for 42 years and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, LeRoy Country Club, LeRoy Sportsman's Club, Bloomington Elks Lodge; and the National Rifle Association.

March 5, 2004DEAN, Harris W., 94, died February 14, 2004 at John Knox Village Med Center in Tampa.
Harris was born March 4, 1909 in Moore's Hill, Ind., the son of William P. and Ethel Bruce Dean.
He married Helen Irene Tuschhoff in Decatur, Ill. on May 31, 1936. She preceded him in death on January 9, 1982.
He later married Emily Guilford in 1993. She survives him.
Two children, Martha Jane (Charles David) Outen of Dunedin, Fla., and Ronald LeRoy (Hilda) Dean of San Rafael, Calif.; his grandchildren in Florida and Georgia; as well as nieces and nephews in the LeRoy area also survive him.
He attended Illinois State (Normal) University, where he starred in both football and basketball, serving as captain of both teams. After graduation, he taught english and history and served as basketball coach in several Illinois public schools. In 1936, he received the Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Iowa. He was Superintendent of Schools in Lexington, Ill. from 1939 until he entered the war in 1942. He joined the Navy and served four years as Chief Gunnery Officer aboard the Battleship USS North Carolina in the Pacific. He resumed his studies after the war and received an Advanced Masters in 1946 and a Doctorate in Education in 1947. He has also received Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from the University of South Florida in 1972 and Campbell University in North Carolina in 1979. In 1947, he became Director of Student Teaching at Ball State Teacher's College in Muncie, Ind., and left after a year to head the Department of Educational Administration at Florida State University in Tallahassee. In 1960, he joined the newly created University of South Florida and served as Dean of Academic Affairs and Vice-President. He also served as Acting President of the University. He retired in 1972 and divided his time for the next ten years between Tampa and LeRoy. He was active in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, serving on numerous committees for many years. For his last twenty years, Harris was a resident of John Knox Village.

She was born in Lexington, Ky., and lived in Akron until 1957, then resided in Massillon until recently moving back to Akron. October 16, 1989John C. Guckeyson, 81, died October 15 in Akron City Hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Akron and lived in the area most of his life. Mr. Guckeyson was employed by Roger's Manufacturing Co. for 15 years retiring in 1979, was a member of American Legion Post 449 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

She had resided in Akron for many years and currently lived in Ravenna.
Born Aug. 1, 1912 in Charleston, W. Va. to Maude (Watson) and Edward Burdette. Ruby joined the big, wonderful Shepherd family in October of 1936 when she married Dreyfus, celebrating 65 years together in 2001.
Preceded in death by Dreyfus in 2002; son, "Buzz" and daughter-in-law, Natalie; parents; brother, James Burdette and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

A dental technician, Mr. Shepherd was a life resident of Akron and a member of the First Church of God there.

May 28, 2007John M. Helphinestine, 93, of 1334 Gorge Blvd., Akron, Ohio died Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the Salem Community Hospital.
He was born March 6, 1914 in Ewing, Kentucky, son of the late Thomas and Pickett Umpstattd Helphinstine. John worked for the Summit County Maintenance Dept. He was a former member of the Northampton Volunteer Fire Department and he enjoyed fishing, bowling and reading.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Ruby (Shepherd) Helphinstine and Emma (Lehman) Helphinstine; two sons, Roger "Darryl" and Norman Helphinstine; a grandson, Matthew Helphinestine; and four brothers, Roger, Cecil, Raymond and Thomas.

February 18, 2014Frank "Sparky" Shepherd, Jr., age 89, of Akron, passed away peacefully February 16th, 2014. He was born on Strawberry Hill-Sand Run Road of Bath. Frank was the twelfth child of fourteen children of Frank and Mary Shepherd. Frank served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and trained in underwater welding while being stationed at Pearl Harbor for the last two years of World War II. After the war, Frank returned to Beaver Falls, Pa. and attended Geneva College.
In 1947, Frank moved to Akron, Ohio where he led a successful roofing business for 50+ years. Also, during that time, Frank met and married his beautiful bride of 42 years, Lovone Shepherd. Frank and Lovone lived and raised their family in the Fairlawn-Montrose area. He also enjoyed baseball and was a big Cleveland Indians fan.
Preceded in death by his wife, Lovone (nee Cook), parents, Frank, Sr. (1949) and Mary (1978), he is survived by his children, Bob (Mary), Pam Shepherd, Gilbert (Cathy), Alan (Barbie); grandsons, Joshua, Jeremiah, Justin, Jonathan, Jordan, Colbey; and two sisters, Mary Short of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ruth Fuetter of Medina, Ohio.

September 22, 1994Lovone Shepherd, 62, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1994.
Born in Spencer, W. Va., Mrs. Shepherd had been an area resident for the past several years, and was employed in the family businesses of Shepherd's Roofing Co. and Shepherd's Pro Sports. She was a member of the Montrose Zion United Methodist Church and her other memberships included past president of the Akron Chapter of O.E.S., Starlets of the O.E.S., the Emblem Club, and she also volunteered at St. Edward Home.
Mrs. Shepherd was a loving wife and mother, and is survived by her husband, Frank; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Mary Shepherd, and Gil and Catherine Shepherd, all of Copley, Alan and Barbie Shepherd of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter, Pamela Shepherd of Copley; sisters, Glena Xenia of Akron, Gladys Wilson of Harrisville, W. Va., JoAnn Hairston of Shaker Heights; brothers, James Cool of Albuquerque, N.M., Harry Cool of Akron, Ronald Cool of Rittman; grandchildren, Joshua, Jeremiah, Justin, Jonathan, and Colbey Shepherd.

Ruth A. Fuetter, 87, of Medina, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017. She was born in Akron on August 23, 1929, to the late Frank and Mary (nee Cooke) Shepherd. She had resided in Medina County for many years.
Ruth went to college and received her certificate for hairdresser. She became a homemaker and raised her family. She enjoyed volunteering for many organizations including the Veterans and Disabled children groups.
Ruth and her husband were avid golfers and made quite a great couple on the dance floor. Her children remember her wonderful cooking and the love their mother had for entertaining family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Kurt (Debbie), Kristine (Craig) Slansky, Konrad ( Katie) and the late Eric (2015); grandchildren, Kristen, Jeremy, Patrick, Matthew, Adam, Sara and the late Michelle; great-grandchildren, Ella, Logan, Ethan, Vera, Serenity and Kendrick. Ruth was one of 14 children and her sister, Mary Short, is the last living sibling.
She was preceded in death by Eva Dean Fisk, Louise Guckeyson, Dreyfus, Gordon, Shirly, Charles, Thomas and Frank Shepherd, Beulah Bishop, Ruby Helpinstine, Martha Gipson and Sylvia Coffee.

August 3, 2008KENNETH A. FUETTER, age 82, passed away July 31, 2008 in Medina.
Mr. Fuetter retired from Plumbers Local No. 55 with 40 years of service. Ken loved his farm and his horses. As a teenager he exercised the horses for the Cleveland Police Academy. He was a member of Fairlawn Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne during WWII.
He is survived by his children, Kurt (Deborah) Fuetter, Kristine (Craig) Slansky, Konrad (Katie) Fuetter and Eric Fuetter; grandchildren Kristen (Troy) Kyle, Jeremy Kalgreen, Patrick Kalgreen, Matthew Fuetter, Adam Fuetter and Sara Fuetter; great-granddaughter Ella Kyle; former wife, Ruth (nee Shepherd) Fuetter.
Preceded in death by his granddaughter, Michelle Fuetter.

June 3, 1984Peoria - Thornton Chase Cooke, 75, a retired accountant with Goodyear Farms, died June 1, 1985. at Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City.
Mr. Cooke of Peoria, was born in Richmond, Ky., and moved to Arizona from Ohio 42 years ago. He was a member of First Southern Baptist Churcj of Peoria and Country Meadows golf vlub.
Survivord include his wife, Maxine; and daughters, Nancy Jo Petterson, Sally Houser and Jerrie Scriven.
