WARE - Enid M. (Lloyd) Hitchcock, 89, of West St., died Saturday at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation for Hadley, after a brief illness.

She was born in Wheelwright, December 4, 1914, daughter of the late Oscar and Maude (Richards) Lloyd.

She grew up in Rutland and attended Rutland High School before moving to Salem, MA, where she graduated from Salem High School in 1931. She was a star forward on the girls basketball teams at Rutland and Salem.

Enid was married to Stanley H. Hitchcock who died in 1963.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Mary Hitchcock of Palmer; her daughter, Elaine Hitchcock of Belchertown; two granddaughters, Lisa Aubin of Ware and Lynn Mayotte of Brimfield; a grandson, Glen Hitchcock of Palmer; a great-grandson, Nathan Mayotte; and a great granddaughter, Grace Hitchcock.

A 1955 graduate of West Springfield High School, she is survived by four children, Leeanne Kelly, Dennis Kelly & Patricia Stethem of Largo, FL, Bernard Kelly of Auburndale, FL; and a brother, Bruce Cottrell of Colorado Springs, CO.

LUDLOW - Catherine M. (Birnie) Dellecese, 92, of Ludlow, died on Mothers day, May 10, 2009 at her home at 37 Howard St. in Ludlow, surrounded by her beloved family.

Catherine was born on June 8th, 1916 in Springfield, MA. to Alexander C. and Maryann (Ruxton) Birnie.

She graduated from Ludlow High School. She went on to graduate from the University of Masssachusetts in Amherst, MA. In 1945 she enlisted in the Women's Air Corps (WAC). She served her country in the European Theater, stationed in High Wycombe, England with the 8th Air Force under General Jimmy Doolittle, earning the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WAAC Service Ribbon and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal.

She married Thomas Dellecese on Christmas Day in 1945 at the American Cathedral in Paris.

After returning home she earned a Masters Degree from Springfield College. She commited her life to her family, teaching, her community, her church, and the DAV Post #94, as well as the Frank W. Ackerman Post 3236 in Ludlow, where she served as chaplin for many years. She was a founder of the Ludlow Cooperative Nursery School, and taught 3rd grade for many years, first at the Primary and Cole buildings, and later at Veteran's Park Elementary School. She retired from teaching 3rd grade at Veterans Park, and later accepted a position teaching at St. John the Baptist School, where she continued to teach until October of 2007. She was honored as Teacher of the Year by both Walmart and the Veteran's Adminstration, and later was named Veteran of the Year in 2005.

She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Dellecese, in March of 2000.

She is survived by her three children, Carla Delle Cese of Ludlow; Ruxton Dellecese, of Tampa, FL; and Mairi Nelson, of Frasier, CO., her grandchildren, Rebecca Paul and Jason Clark, both of Ludlow; Ruxton Dellecese Jr. and Diane Dellecese both of Tampa, FL; and her great-grandchildren, Abagail Paul and Gunnar Paul both of Ludlow.

She was also predeceased by a sister Marie Ellen Cottrell and a brother A. R. Birnie.


Thomas C. Dellecese

Thomas C. Dellecese , 83, of this town, died Thursday at home.

He was a self-employed accountant and worked previously for Chapin & Green Accountants of Springfield. Born in South Barre, he made his home here since 1945. A disabled World War II veteran of the Army Air Forces, he was a technical sergeant quartermaster with the 44th Air Supply Squadron in the European Theater. He was active in the Disabled American Veterans Chapter here and was a past commander. He also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3236, was an honorary Memorial Day parade marshal and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, the former Catherine Birnie; a son, Ruxton of Florida; two daughters, Carla J. Clark of Ludlow and Mairi-Angela Nelson of Colorado; two brothers, Frank of California and Louis of Springfield; and four grandchildren.

VERO BEACH, FL - Frances M. Williams, 83, of Vero Beach, FL, died August 23, 2004, at VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach.

She was born February 16, 1921, in Longmeadow, MA. She was the daughter of Edward and Agnes Munson.

She was a graduate of Classical High School, Springfield, MA and was also a graduate of Edgewood Park Junior College in New York. She was a member of the Springfield Junior League, the Longmeadow Country Club, The Moorings Club, Vero Beach and was a life member of the First Church of Christ, Longmeadow.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband, David L. Williams; two daughters, Halley Trani of South Portland, ME and Sydney Manley of Burke, VA; two stepdaughters, Linda Seabury of Suffield, CT and Susan Frazier of Hadley, MA; five grandchildren, Courtney Manley, Benjamin Manley, Sarah Frazier, Kathleen Frazier, and Chelsea Seabury; and a twin brother E. Russell Munson.

Mrs. Williams was predeceased by her first husband, A. Ruxton Birnie, who died in 1985.

Philip Bates Mitchell, 86, of Smyrna, GA, passed away on August 20, 2021. Born in Springfield, MA, he was the son of Ronald Alexander Mitchell and Ruth Bates Mitchell of Stafford Springs, Connecticut.

Mr. Mitchell graduated cum laude from Phillips Academy, Andover, and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and Engineering Administration.

He served as an officer in the Connecticut Army Reserves until 1967, achieving the rank of Captain.

Mr. Mitchell followed his grandfather and father into the textile industry, working for Cyril Johnson Woolen Mill, Stafford Springs, CT, Bigelow Carpet Company Woolen Mill in Thompsonville, CT and Greenville, SC, and Patchogue-Plymouth and Amoco Fabrics & Fibers in Atlanta, GA. Until retirement, his work in Research & Development contributed to patented products in the carpet textile industry.

Spending time with family at gatherings and celebrations was important to him. Proud of his Scottish heritage, he studied genealogy as a pastime. He enjoyed traveling, especially to National Parks, Civil War battle sites, and historic coastal fortifications. A motorsports enthusiast, Mr. Mitchell loved reminiscing about his Austin Healey.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Mitchell Rae, and great-grandson, Carson Young.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Maureen McInerney Mitchell, formerly of New Britain, Connecticut, brothers Ronald A. Mitchell, Jr. and John B. Mitchell, children Philip Mitchell, Jr. (Cynthia), Elizabeth Cooper (Timothy), and David Mitchell, grandchildren, Stephanie Young (Dane), Michael Richards (Jason), Daniel Mitchell, Evan Cooper, and Meredith Cooper, and great-grandchildren, Jade, Addison, and Asher Young.


Webster Edwin Collins

NORTH FALMOUTH - Webster E. Collins, 99, died Wednesday at his home.

He was the husband of the late Louise (Bates).

Born in Springfield, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925. He then entered E.F. Collins & Sons, the family cotton waste, wool waste and real estate business.

In 1932, he was elected to the city council of Springfield. After one term, he returned to the family business, becoming a partner in 1948. He closed the business in 1976 and moved to his summer residence in North Falmouth.

Survivors include a son, Webster A. Collins of Milton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was the father of the late Douglas.

WALPOLE, NH Beverly E. Harris, 82, of Putnam Road, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH. She was born March 14, 1929, in Claremont, daughter of Floyd and Miriam (Haskell) Young.

Mrs. Harris attended school in Weathersfield and was a graduate of the Springfield High School, Springfield, VT. She worked for Jones and Lamson in Springfield, and was housekeeper for Austin Hubbard for 25 years. Mrs. Harris was a member of the Westminster Congregational Church, Westminster, VT. She enjoyed going to York Beach, ME, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

In Weathersfield Bow on Oct. 30, 1948, she married Harold Edmund Harris.

Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband of Walpole, NH; her son, Dennis F. Harris of Vernon, VT; her daughter, Dianne Fontaine of North Springfield, VT; her brother, Kenneth Young of Wethersfield, VT; six grandchildren, Darren, David and Diana Fontaine, Christen Hebert, Scott and Caitlan Harris; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and six brothers and sisters.

FUNERAL NOTICE: There will be calling hours Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at the FENTON & HENNESSEY FUNERAL HOME, Bellows Falls, VT from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at the Congregational Church, Westminster, VT. Burial will take place in the cemetery in Weathersfield Bow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Harris' name may be made to the , PO Box 485, Williston, VT 05495.

A native of New York City, Mr. Crocker was a retired engineer with Mobil Oil Corporation with 30 years of service.

He is survived by his daughter, Janet C. Spinner of New Haven, Conn., and a son, Douglas M. Crocker of West Islip, N.Y. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jacob A. Spinner of Michigan, Anna R. Spinner and Lindsey T. Crocker, both of New York City and a great-granddaughter, Lily A. Spinner of Michigan.
