As a youth, she loved reading, language, and literature, interests that persisted throughout her life. A highlight of her childhood was becoming Illinois State Spelling Champion in 1928. Following her father's death a few months later, her mother became a realtor to support and educate the three children. After three years at the University of Illinois, Ruth lived in Chicago for seven years, where she worked first at Swift and Company, then as Secretary to the Editor of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Their first child was born in Baltimore, the second in Grand Rapids, and the third in Jackson. The family's sojourn in their Grass Lake home dates from Memorial Day 1952. In Grass Lake, Ruth's childhood training and talents in music found expression in a variety of original compositions and arrangements performed in the region. She became involved with PTA and Child Study Club, for which she arranged music for three female voices and directed children and adults in performances of lullabies, Christmas songs and folk songs. With assistance from the Grass Lake High School music teacher, their group performed Benjamin Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols.' She composed a sequence of a dozen solos and trios for voice and piano for a Child Study Club meeting, a program which was then performed for clubs around the state. Ruth was active in the Ann Arbor Recorder Society. She composed music for four recorders, including a program written and performed for the Grass Lake wedding of Tamsen Mather. As an active and vocal member of the community, she started the Grass Lake Community Scholarship Fund, serving for many years as Trustee/Treasurer, and was a Founding and lifelong Board Member of the Whistlestop Park Association.
