DECATUR -- Margaret Morthland Shaffer, 91, a Decatur native and resident for more than 40 years, died Tuesday (Feb. 14, 1995) in Ellisville, Mo., in the Bethesda West Nursing Home.
Mrs. Shaffer was the daughter of Emelie and Samuel Morthland, part of an old and prominent family in Decatur's history. Sam ``Cap'' Morthland was a captain in the Decatur Fire Department for many years, and in later years, worked at the Staley Pumping Station on Lake Decatur. Mrs. Shaffer was a fine concert pianist who met her future husband, Kenneth L. Shaffer, when they both played in the orchestra at the First Christian Church in Decatur. The family moved to St. Louis in 1944. Both Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer were very active members of St. John's Methodist Church in St. Louis. Mrs. Shaffer's special interest was the Women's Society and its many charitable projects.
The Shaffers both loved to travel leisurely to learn about and enjoy places they visited. Their interest in trains lead them to many interesting adventures, and their interest in the Holy Land grew into a four-month trip around the world. She loved flowers and always had a beautiful yard. She enjoyed sewing and never sat down without some project to work on -- knitting, crocheting or embroidery. In recent years she took up quilting.
Mr. Shaffer preceded her in death in 1982 at the age of 83. Mrs. Shaffer is survived by her daughters, Margaret ``Peggy'' Butcher of Oakland, Calif.; Georgia Hinton of Bellevue, Wash.; son, Kenneth L. Shaffer Jr. of New York City; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary or Peggy as she was also known, graduated from Decatur Memorial's nursing program in 1979. She pursued a Bachelor's degree and graduated from College of St Francis in 1986. She worked as a registered nurse at both Decatur Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital. She worked night shift so would be available to attend all the extracurricular activities of her kids and grandkids. Even though she was able to retire from the hospital, she missed nursing and worked as a school nurse for a few hours each week until she ultimately retired.
Peggy had 5 children; Jack (Judy) of Decatur, IL, Mike (Beth) of Decatur, IL, Brian of Greenville, SC, Mark (Christine Patch) of Decatur, IL, and Mary (JD) Royce, Mechanicsburg, IL. You could always find Peggy at a sporting event. From her grandkids, to her son Jack's sports teams, she would always be there cheering them on from the sidelines. She was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and loved to watch the games on TV. She loved to travel and took the grandkids on many adventures to Six Flags and St. Louis. She traveled to Europe and although not as frequently as she wanted, to Canada to visit family. If anyone mentioned going on a trip, she would always ask 'are you taking me?" She loved to shop and the family would joke that if you ever needed anything you could call her and she would go downstairs and see if she had what you needed and if she didn't would shop for it. She loved the music of the Eagles and went to at least 3 concerts. She knew the words to every song and would sing right along with the band. She made the best rolls and cherry cheesecakes that will be missed and could prep and cook a whole Thanksgiving meal for the entire family all by herself. She loved her animals; Lacey and Jesse her dogs who preceded her in death and her 2 cats George and Wilbur.

Newsletter of the International Haskell Family Society
Volume 14, No. 2, June 2005The following is extracted from the March 16th front page of Bruce Haskell's beloved Kiwanis Club's Thousand Oaks Log:
The passing of BRUCE HASKELL in Hawaii last Wednesday, March 9, will leave a huge void in the ranks of the Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks (California, USA). He passed away one hour after landing on the island. There [was] a celebration of Bruce's life on Sunday, March 20, 4 p.m. at the Haskell home.
Bruce once said: "Don't ask me to chair anything; don't ask me to lead. I only want to volunteer and work." And work he did. Along with his good co-volunteer he could always be found at every event the club sponsored. He was also, right up to the end, a part of the house committee.
Bruce was born in August 1926 in Decatur, Illinois, the only child of Bruce Sr. and Beulah Haskell. He and Joyce were married in 1955 when they eloped to Arizona.
Together they had three children, Michael, Jenneth and Teresa, and they have 14 grandchildren. Bruce spent his working life in the aerospace industry with companies that included Northrup, Douglas, North America, and General Dynamics. He served with the Air Force, mostly in Tokyo, from 1945 until 1947.
Wednesday mornings and Kiwanis events just won't be the same with Bruce gone. Like Joyce and the entire Haskell family, we will miss him terribly.
