December 27, 1935Brockton - Dec. 26 - Arthur W. Sawtell, 70, widely known resident of this city for many years, died today at the home of his son, Dr. M. E. Sawtell, 7 Winona st. after a brief illness. He was a native of Winchedon and came to BGrockton when a young man. He was a mason by trade, retiring 15 years ago.
Besides his son he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Helen Swanson, also of this city.
With ten brave shipmates, he perished in the Bay of Biscayne while voluntarily engaged in saving the torpedoed British steamer Wellington. Triumphantly saved from the enemy, the vessel succumbed to the gale seventeen hours later. These men were seamen and inheritors of the traditions of the sea. Their example shall live forever.

heroism, by presidential citation, 11 November 1920.
