Nelson Jewett Haskell

Nelson J. Haskell, 94, of Cedar Mountain passed away Friday, April 14, 2006, at his residence.

He was a native of South Paris, Maine, the son of the late Edwin G. and Florence Haskell. He was a 1935 graduate of Northeastern University in Boston. Later he became a product engineer for Sperry Rand for 20 plus years. He was involved in the design and documentation of many space vehicles. He started the Connestee Falls Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Wright-Haskell; a son, Alan Haskell of Homewood, Ill.; a daughter, Jane Smith of Meredith, N.H.; a stepson, Adam Rector of Hendersonville; a stepdaughter, Caroline Wright of the home; several grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

MARBLEHEAD - Roger H. Cook, 42, of 37 Bubier Road, died unexpectedly Saturday in Salem Hospital. He was the husband of Francine (Navin) Cook.

Born in Evanston, Ill., son of Rosamond (Haskell) Cook and the late Frank Cook, he had been a resident of Marblehead for 12 years.

Mr. Cook was manager of production planning for Microwave Associates of Burlington. He was a graduate of Needham High School and attended Tufts University.

He was a member of the Marblehead Lodge of Elks and the Gerry 5 VFA of Marblehead. He was active in sailing and sailed in the Marblehead to Halifax races.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two brothers, Robert R. Cook of New York and Frank Cook of Norwood.

She was born in Manchester, was educated in the Manchester school system and was graduated in 1944 from the University of New Hampshire. Miss Haskell has resided in this community for many years. She had formerly been employed as a library assistant at the Nashua Public Library. Miss Haskell was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Nashua.

The family includes an aunt and cousins.

Haskell Smith Rhett, Jr, age 83, of Wilmington, NC died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Cornelia Nixon Davis Health Care Center after an extended illness. He was born January 12, 1926 in Wilmington and was preceded in death by his parents Haskell Smith Rhett and Jane MacMillan Rhett.

"Hack" was a member of the class of 1943 at New Hanover High School. After graduation at age seventeen he joined the US Navy. He trained as an Aviation Ordinanceman in the bomb disposal unit and served in the Pacific theater during World War II, earning a battle star at Okinawa. After the war, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of the SAE fraternity. After college, he worked as a trust officer with Peoples Savings Bank and Trust (now Wachovia) in Wilmington and Winston-Salem. He was a life member of the Carolina Yacht Club and a member of L'Arioso.

He was an avid boatsman and sailor, and was a mechanical expert. He worked as a marina manager, boat builder, and in later years as a marine surveyor and joinerman. He was proud to have been the "last captain and the last person to operate the tugboat John Taxis " in 1979 just before she was put on display at Chandler's Wharf. Haskell was an accomplished woodworker and taught Vocational Education at Roland Grise and at Williston, where he met his wife of 26 years, Sue Bonner Hall.

Haskell is survived by his wife Sue, his four children, Haskell Smith Rhett III and wife Connie of Wilmington, Dorothy Rhett Gore of Wilmington, Mary Rhett Gottschalg and husband John of Alpharetta, GA, Katharine Rhett Gallotta and husband Steve of Suffolk, VA, and seven grandchildren, Hannah Rhett, Walter Rhett, Owen Gore, Will Gottschalg, Charlotte Gottschalg, Katharine Gallotta, and Haskell Gallotta. Also surviving are two stepchildren, Mitchell Henry Hall and wife Melinda of Wilmington, Michael Hundley Hall and wife Mim of Wilmington, and their children Ethan Hall, Elissa Hall, and Kaya Hall. He is also survived by his sister Katharine Rhett Fox and husband James C. fox of Wilmington and their family.

RHETT, Charles H. Sr. 83, of 13 Seventh St., NW, Pulaski, died Tuesday, March 30, 1993 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Charleston, S.C. on April 24, 1909 and was the son of the late Henry Rhett and Sarah Harper Rhett.

He was a retired employer of Appalachian Power Co., Pulaski having 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army/Air Force, and he was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Pulaski.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret L. Rhett, Pulaski; one daughter, Monnie McMillan, Pulaski; three sons, Charles H. Rhett Jr., Pulaski, Harry Burks Rhett, Martinsville, Edward B. Rhett, Charleston, W.Va.; one sister, Sallie R. Rieley, Roanoke; one brother, Roland Rhett, Martinsville; eight grandchildren.

Margaret Houston Laney Rhett, 91, of 13 7th Street, N.W., Pulaski, passed away quietly at the Pulaski Health and Rehab. Center early Sunday morning, August 28, 2005.

She was born in Monroe, North Carolina on May 28, 1914 and was the daughter of the late Wilma Armfield Laney and Walter Laney.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Harper Rhett, Sr.; her brothers, Percy Laney (her twin), Emsley Laney, Walter Laney, George Laney, Phifer Laney and Frank Laney as well as a dear daughter-in-law, Edna Nichols Rhett.

Surviving are brother, Robert Laney, Monroe, N.C.; sister, Eleanor Laney Lingle, Elberton, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Corrine Laney, Monroe, N.C. and Dorothy Laney, Monroe, N.C.; children, Harry Burks Rhett, Martinsville, Charles Harper Rhett and wife, Vicki, Pulaski, Edward Brisbane Rhett, Greensboro, N.C., Margaret Rhett McMillan and husband, Richard, Pulaski; grandchildren, Daniel Bost Rhett and wife, Margaret, Chester, Jeremy Burks Rhett and wife, Jen and sons, Harper and Nate, Atlanta, Ga., Edward Dylan Rhett, Keyser, W.Va., Micah Rhett McMillan, Washington, D.C., Josie Marie McMillan, Arlington, Charles Andrew Rhett and wife, Jen, Baltimore, Md., Kelly Webb Rhett and wife, Christina, Pulaski and Julia Christine Rhett, Matthews, N.C.
