November 30, 2010Elisabeth "Betty" (Cleaves) Turkevich, 93, died peacefully Friday afternoon, Nov. 26, 2010, at Quarry Hill Gardens in Camden surrounded by her daughters and close friends.
Betty was born March 12, 1917, in Old Town, a daughter of Carl Schurz Cleaves and Catharene Gould (McCloud) Cleaves. When she was 9, Betty left her beloved Maine when she moved with her parents and four siblings to the Philadelphia area. There she attended Swarthmore High School and the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a primary education teaching certificate.
In 1942 she married her brother Bill's roommate at Dartmouth College, Nicholas Turkevich. The couple settled in the Philadelphia area, and later moved to Pompton Plains, N.J. In 1952 Betty and Nick and their daughters moved to Houston, where they lived until 1961, when the family moved to Barrington, Ill.
After their daughters moved out on their own in the early 1970s, Nick and Betty moved to Amsterdam when Nick accepted a marketing job in Europe. Betty took advantage of this opportunity to learn Dutch and made many new friends. Five years later, Betty and Nick moved to Paris, where Betty took up weaving and delighted in extensive travels throughout Europe with Nick. Throughout the couple's 13 years in Europe, they hosted numerous visits from family and friends, sharing many of their favorite places and experiences with their visitors.
Upon Nick's retirement in 1987, they returned to the United States, settling in West Fairlee, Vt., where they enjoyed rural life and many friends. In 2003, Betty and Nick moved to Lincolnville to be near their daughter Julie and were warmly welcomed by the community there.
Throughout her life and travels, Betty maintained a close and loving relationship with her extensive family, always providing gentle guidance and non-judgmental nurturing. Gracious and welcoming, her quick humor and love of life were immediately apparent to all who knew her.
She enjoyed cooking and knitting and delighted in sharing these loves with daughters, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Her remedy for difficult times was to focus on the needs of others, always feeling that she had something to give; she was always right. Betty's family and friends of all ages were blessed with her grace, kindness and welcoming nature. She is already greatly missed.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Nick; a brother, William Gardner Cleaves; a sister, Florence Cleaves Mulligan; and two daughters, Tatiana and Barbara Turkevich.

Over the years she served as organist/choir director of Elm Street Methodist Church, Clarke Memorial United Methodist Church, Warren Congregational Church, Woodfords Congregational Church and Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church.
She married Dana Webster Babb on Dec. 14, 1943. She and her husband had wintered in St. Petersburg, Fla., since his retirement.
Her joys were music and gardening.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Dana Babb of Westbrook; two sons, David W. Babb of Westbrook and Willian E. Babb of North Edgecomb; two daughters, Nancy B. Godin of Windham and Marcia B. Carr of Gray; and 11 grandchildren.
Portland Press Herald (ME)
April 6, 2010Dana Babb, 95, known for lifetime of community service
There's a bench near Riverbank Park that has Dana Babb's name on it. It was dedicated to him in honor of his service to Westbrook.
''He found pleasure in assisting and working with the (Cornelia Warren Community) Association to donate money to worthy causes to better the city,'' said his daughter Marcia Carr.
Mr. Babb served on the association's board of directors for 50 years, and had a hand in deciding which projects received funding.
He was responsible for giving grants to projects such as the Riverwalk, Riverbank Park, the Cornelia Warren Field and the Mission Possible teen center.
Mr. Babb served on the board until last year. He died Sunday at age 95.
Born and raised in Westbrook, Mr. Babb worked for S.D. Warren from 1937 to 1976 as an accountant and main office manager.
His daughter Nancy Godin said that, for her, having an accountant as a father helped her with high school algebra.
''He could remember how to do the algebra from high school. He helped us with things like that because it came naturally to him,'' she said. ''It made going through school easier to have someone like that - someone who loved you and wanted to help you get through school and succeed.''
He was very generous with his time and money, Carr said, to his family and to the community.
Mr. Babb, a member of the Masonic Temple Lodge AF&AM, was honored recently for his 70 years as a Mason. ''Not too many make it to 70 years,'' Carr said.
In his younger years, Mr. Babb dedicated a lot of time to his church as well. He was a founding member of the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church's ''Thumbangers.'' The group of men would meet every Saturday morning to work on projects around the church.
''Whether it was painting the parsonage or building classrooms,'' Carr said, her father was there to help.
When his wife, Margaret, died in 1998, he donated a large sum of money to the church in her name to maintain the organ, Carr said.
His wife taught piano and played the organ for the church, so he understood how much it cost to maintain the instrument.
Mr. Babb lived independently until last month, and it wasn't unusual to find him outdoors raking or climbing a ladder to do something. Last summer, Carr said, he was on a stepladder, caulking the windows of his garage.
''He liked to be active and doing things. He didn't want to rely on other people,'' she said. ''He would do as much as he could.''
Mr. Babb enjoyed the times when his family, including four children, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, could be around him.
''We always got together,'' Godin said. ''Just to be together, just because. We had a lot of love and laughter. It was a fabulous family. Still is.''
