October 27, 1999Emmons F. Lewellen, 100, of Franklin Street died at 7:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He graduated in 1922 from Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering. During World War I, he served in the Army as a military band musician at Purdue. He was active in the Purdue fencing team and was the chief musician of the Purdue band.
He worked at Reeves Pulley Company during the summer while in college and joined Lewellen Manufacturing Co. in 1922 where he became president in 1956, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Lewellen was a member of First Christian Church, serving as an elder, deacon and trustee. He was a member of Columbus Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a charter member of Columbus Symphony Orchestra and was principal flutist for the Indianapolis Scottish Rite Symphony Orchestra.
He was a charter member of Harrison Lake Country Club, a member of the Columbus Photoseekers Camera Club and St. Johns Masonic Lodge, Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite and York Rite.
Mr. Lewellen was born in Columbus Oct. 24, 1899, the son of Darcy and Mayme Emmons Lewellen. He married Mabel Hawes in Columbus Oct. 16, 1925. She died Jan. 23, 1995.
Survivors include a son, Rod H. Lewellen of Columbus; grandchildren, Scott A. Lewellen of Indianapolis and Jennifer A. Morgan of Columbus; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Frances Simmons and Jeanne Norbeck.

October, 27, 2003Funeral services for Hazel L. Bolly, 84, of Memphis, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, at R.D. Pyke Funeral Service, Henryville, with burial in Bowery Cemetery, Memphis.
She died Saturday, October 25, 2003. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Thomas C. Bolly Jr. & his wife, Martha, Memphis; two daughters, Mary Ellen & her husband, Harold Dean, Sellersburg and Marsha B. & her husband, Mike Byers, Memphis; five grandchildren, Harold Jr. & Mark Dean, Debra Harter, Ashley Bolly and Johnathan Byers; and three great-grandchildren, Paige, Kinsey and Dyland Dean.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Thomas Conrad Bolly Sr. who died in 1989; her father and mother, Carl & Julia Callahan Grimm; and a brother, John "Newt" Grimm.

July 31, 1960Funeral rites were held Monday afternoon from the Zabel Funeral Home, followed by burial in Fairview Cemetery here, for Grady F. Freeman, of Seymour, father of Mrs. Carl Zabel, of Brownstown.
Ill for several months, Mr. Freeman died late Friday night at the Jackspn county hospital where he had been a medical patient for several weeks.
A retired motorman on the old interurban line which ran between Indianapolis and Louisville. Mr. Freeman was born in Clark county December 23, 1890, a son of Ramey R. and Emma Dunlevy Freeman.
He was marrried at Memphis, Indiana, November 5, 1911, to Pearl Whitesides, who died in April of this year.
Surving in addition to Mrs. Zabel are three other daughters, Mrs. Margie Wince, of Arthur, Illinois, Mrs. Mildred Morschina, St. Louis, Missouri, and Mrs. Emma Lee Watson, of Columbus. He also leaves 13 grandchildren and a great-grantchild.

She was a homemaker and a member of Seymour chapter of Order of the Eastern Star.
She was the widow of Joseph Jupin.

April 29, 2003Brownstown - Alice M. Zabel, 86, of Brownstowm died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Lutheran Community Home in Seymour.
Mrs. Zabel was a homemaker, a 1934 graduate of Seymour High School and a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid Society and Memorial Hospital Guild. She was a former member Psi Iota Xi Sorority and several bridge clubs.
Mrs. Abel was born in Seymour, May 3, 1916, the daughter of Grady and Pearl Whiteside Greeman. She married Carl P. Zabel June 11, 1938, at Brownstown.
Survivors include children, Carl Sidney, Thomas R. and James D. Zabell, all of Brownstown; a sister, Marjorie Wince of Evansville; grandchildren, Amy Crosser, Jule Halmbach, Melissa Acton, Adam, Jill, John, David, Jeffrey and Jamie Zabel; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Dec. 27, 1971; and sisters, Mildred Jupin and Emma Lee Watson

May 17, 2005EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Harold Dean Wince, 89, of Evansville died May 10, 2005, at Deaconess Hospital, Evansville.
Mr. Wince was born March 19, 1916, in Jennings County, Ind., a son of Homer and Lona Carlock Wince. He married Marjorie Pearl. She survives.
Survivors also include three daughters, Lona D. Lawrence and Jeri Lee Schormann, both of Evansville, and Mary Jean Schliessman of Albany, Ind.; three sons, John Freeman Wince of Elgin, James Robert Wince of Midway, Ky., and Richard David Wince of Kirkland; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Wince was a supervisor at U.S. Industries and DuPont.
He enjoyed golf and crossword puzzles.

February 2, 1977Laura (Tapan) Safford, 87, of Belmont, a former Williamstown resident who operated a music school there, died last night in Belmont. She was the widow of Charles L. Safford, who for many years was music director and organist at Williams College.
Mrs. Safford was born May 8, 1889 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she studied at the Santa Cecelia Conservatory, winning a gold medal as a cellist. A graduate of the Institute of Musical Art in New York City, now the Julliard School of Music, she studied cello with the late Willem Willeke, and later studied with the late Mme. Schuman-Heink ans other well known voice teachers.
For many years before moving to Williamstown, she was head of the vocal department of the Hartford (Conn.) School of Music. She opened her Williamstown studio in 1948. She moved to Pittsfield in the fall of 1954, and was head of the voice department of the Pittsfield Community Music School and was a voice teacher at the former Miss Hall's School.
She leaves two sons, Charles Louis Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, and Theodore R. Safford of Falmouth, Foreside, Maine; and a daughter, Ellen S. Goodwin of West Newton.

May 19, 2005WILLIAMSTOWN -- Charles Louis Safford Jr., 85, of Cleveland, formerly of Williamstown, died April 9.
Born in New York City on Aug. 7, 1919, son of Charles Louis Safford Sr., former chairman of the Williams College music department, his family moved to Williamstown in 1929. At age 12, he saw John Philip Sousa conduct his marching band at the 40th anniversary of the Bennington (Vt.) Battle Monument. He graduated in1937 from Exeter Academy and, in 1941, from Williams College, where as bell ringer at the chapel he often played popular songs instead of hymns. He moved to Cleveland in 1946 and back to Williamstown in 1980.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was stationed in India as a cryptologist, decoding Japanese messages.
Mr. Safford was employed in the contract sales department of Halle Brothers Department Stores Co. in Cleveland, retiring in 1980.
Music was his avocation and piano playing his special talent. He was known for his ability to play any song requested. From the 1950s through the 1970s, he was musical director and accompanist for numerous groups in Cleveland, including Nisi Prius, Junior League Follies, Candlelight Theater and the Hermit Club. He also was a trustee of the Bascom Little Fund, which disperses funds to deserving music students.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir and was substitute organist. While in Cleveland, he was a member and usher of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
After returning to Williamstown, he founded and directed the bell choirs at St. Patrick's Church and at the Williamstown Youth Center.
He also was a co-founder of the college's octet and sang in its Alumni Octet throughout his life. He played piano and percussion in the Berkshire Symphony, and was archivist of the college's music department.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, the former Margery Rogers; two sons, Platt Rogers Safford and Thomas Bradbury Safford, both of Cleveland; a daughter, Esther Dean Safford of Cleveland, and eight grandchildren.

March 4, 2009Margery Rogers Safford died of natural causes on February 22, 2009 in Kent, Ohio.
Midge was born in Denver and grew up in Cleveland. She was a graduate of Laurel School ('41) and Connecticut College. Upon retirement in 1979, Midge moved to Williamstown with her husband, Lou Safford. She recently moved back to Ohio to be near her family.
She is survived by her children, Platt, Esther and Thomas, eight grandchildren, and a sister Judith R. Collens, of Medina.

December 2, 1999Theodore Safford, 78, of Winter Street and formerly of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.
Born in New York City, a son of Charles L. and Laura Tappen Safford, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy, Williams College and Juilliard School of Music in New York.
Mr. Safford was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.
He was in broadcasting for 25 years and was employed for 10 years at the Veterans Affairs Center at Togus, retiring in 1983.
His lifelong interest was in music, singing and playing the bagpipes in several groups in New England, his family said.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Doris C. Safford of Gardiner; his son, Charles D. of Roswell, Ga.; his daughter, Leslie A. Safford of Waltham, Mass; his brother, C. Louis Jr. of Williamstown, Mass.; his sister, Ellen S. Goodwin of Amherst, Mass.; and his grandson, Zachary Schimler Safford.

Doris C. Safford, known all her life as Dody, died on August 23, 2015 in Maine.
She is survived by a brother, Duncan A. Campbell, daughter, Leslie A. Safford, son, Charles D. Safford, her daughter-in-law, Amy Schimler, grandson, Zachary W. Schimler and numerous extended family.
