Hilda was born on April 21, 1921 in Cedarvale, Kansas, the daughter of Neal and Cora (Hess) Sullivan, and passed away peacefully at her residence on April 13, 2020.

She married James Lowe on March 28, 1948.

Hilda retired from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas.

She was preceded in passing by her husband, James Lowe, her parents, three sisters and one brother.

Survivors include her daughter, Luann (Randy) Long of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; her son, Douglas (Michael) Lowe of Pearland, Texas; three grandsons, Joshua (Sarah) Long of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Wayne (Andrea) Long of Fairview, Oklahoma, and Daniel Long of Tonkawa; five great-grandchildren.

Maxine C. Lowe, age 88, of Sand Springs, went to be with the Lord Wednesday evening, October 4, 2006 at Mannford, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Lowe was born on November 5, 1917 in Arapaho, Oklahoma the daughter of Everett L. and Verna A. (Burt) Cunningham.

She grew up in Arapaho where she graduated from high school. She then attended and graduated from Central State University at Edmond.

On March 15, 1941 she was united in marriage to Harvey Dent Lowe, Sr. in Blanchard, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2004.

She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City where she worked in the Day Care. She enjoyed reading and music and lived in Oklahoma City until moving to Sand Springs in the late 1990's.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Lowe of Sand Springs; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister Doris Morrison of Waco, Texas and a brother, Ike Cunningham and wife Marie of Clinton, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Susan Deason and a son, Harvey D. "Sandy" Lowe, Jr.

Doris Bradford Franz passed away June 26, in Miami, Florida, just shy of her 100th birthday. She was born in Montreal, Quebec August 9, 1909, the only child of British parents Guy and Mabel Bradford. Her father was an early filmmaker and she traveled extensively, living in Los Angeles and New York.

She married Silas Franz of Dolgeville, N.Y., and they had one son, Paul. She is survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

She will be remembered as an elegant lady with a keen sense of humor and British wit. We will all miss her kindness and generosity and sweet blue-eyed smiles.

Mrs. Eleanor Waterbury Franz, 88, of Dolgeville and Canada Lake, died Tuesday at Little Falls Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1913 in Dolgeville, the daughter of Dr. Walter and Florence Shaver Waterbury.

Mrs. Franz was a 1930 graduate of Dolgeville High School and a 1934 graduate of Albany State College with a bachelor's degree. She earned a master's degree from Syracuse University in 1970. She spent many summers in East Canada Lake at the family cottage. She worked at Cherry Burrell, Little Falls, in the war effort during World War II. She was an English teacher and librarian in Milford, Otsego County, and Corning schools, Steuben County. She became supervisor of English in 1937 in the Milne School of Albany State University. She was employed as an English teacher and librarian at Dolgeville Central School, retiring in 1973.

Mrs. Franz was a member of Dolgeville Presbyterian Church. She was a former board member and president of the Herkimer County Historical Society. She was a prime mover in establishing the Dolgeville-Manheim Historical Society. She was historian for Dolgeville and Manheim for many years. She had interests in local history and writing. She wrote at one time for Dolgeville, Little Falls and other area newspapers, as well as numerous articles in publications such as North Country Ufe, Adirondack Ufe, New York Folklore Quarterly,
New York State Education and The English Journal. She was the author of a number of books including "Dolge," "Manheim's Snells Bush" and "The Underground Railroad in Brocketts' Bridge, NY"  She and her husband shared interests in travel, books, folklore, antiques and Canada Lake.

Survivors include her husband, Lorenz Franz, whom she married on July 3, 1939; one daughter, Deborah Hoffman of Gloversville; one son, Kirk W. Franz of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Chaloner Waterbury of Newport, Herkimer County; and two grandsons.

Burial will take place in Dolgeville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Miss Camilla Imogene Rockwell, 51, of 417 N. Prospect St., who died yesterday in Oneida County Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Fenner Funeral Home �

Miss Rockwell was born Sept. 4, 1900 in Poland, a daughter of Pliny and Blanche Jones Rockwell. She came to Herkimer in 1907 and was a graduate of Herkimer schools and Faxton Hospital School of Nursing, Utica.

She served as office nurse for Dr. James F. Gallo for several years. She enlisted in the Army Nursing Corps during World War II and served two years at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington. After her discharge, she was employed as office nurse for Dr. Harold T. Golden.

She was a member of Myrtle Chapter, OES, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Order of the Amaranth, American Legion Auxiliary, Faxton Alumnae Association and Herkimer Reformed Church.

Surviving are her parents; a sister, Mrs. Julia Grant, East Herkimer; and a brother, William, Herkimer.


60398. Walter Jones Rockwell

Herkimer - Walter Jones Rockwell, 36, an aviator known throughout the Mohawk Valley as Rocky," was killed Friday when the plane he was piloting crashed in a swamp near Succasuana, N. J., after exploding in the air.

Word of the tragedy was received here Friday night by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pliny Rockwell, 220 N. Park Pl., and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Moses Rockwell, same address.

Pilot Alone in Plane

Examination of the wreckage by State Police revealed that Rockwell was alone in the plane. During the past year he had been piloting chartered planes from Roosevelt Field, Mineola, LI. Identification was made by State Police from cards found in the pilot's clothing.

Miss Camilla Rockwell, RN, Herkimer, left for New York to make arrangements for the return of her brother's body to Herkimer.

His Third Crash

The crash was Rockwell's third in his 12 years as a pilot His first accident was on Feb. 16,1929, when he made a forced landing at the Utica Airport. His biplane overturned in a snowbank, but he escaped with minor bruises. At that time he was a student of the Utica Flying Service Inc.

About a year later while piloting a plane over the mountains near Burlington, Vt., and with a passenger aboard, his craft caught fire at about 5,000 feet up. Rockwell side slipped the plane earthward and landed on the side of a mountain. Both he and his passenger escaped serious injury, but the plane was destroyed.

For a number of years. Rocky conducted passenger flying services at Lake George, Miami, Fla., New Jersey and other places.

Flew to South America

About a year ago he was engaged by a mining company in Colombia, South America, to fly provisions from 'the United States to the mines. His route carried him over Jungles. At one time he also served as an Instructor at the Albany Airport

At the time of his death he held the position of vice president of the Waco Sales of New York Inc.

Walter was born in Poland Feb. 10, 1904, and when a boy came to Herkimer with his parents. His education was received in Herkimer schools. On Apr. 21, 1928, he married Miss Elizabeth Moses.

Besides his parents and widow, he leaves two sisters, Camilla and Mrs. Bert Master, Herkimer, and a brother, William, who is a mechanic at Roosevelt Field.

Mr. William D. Rockwell, age 89, a resident of Utica for over 40 years, passed
away Friday, July 13, 2007, after a 5 month illness in the Avenue Nursing Facility in
Schenectady, NY.

Since 2005 he had resided with his son, Jim and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Piazza in Glenville, NY.

He was born on May 24,1918 in Herkimer, NY, a son of the late Pliny and Blanche Jones ROCkwell. and was educated locally. He served our country during WWll in the US Army, 15th Engineer Battalion. He was married to Carma Nencetli in 1961 in the Town of Ohio, a blessed union of 44 years until her death in 2005.

Bill was employed for many years at the UNIVAC Corp. in the accounting department, until his retirement He was an avid fly fisherman, hunter and skilled woodworker. He was a member of the Royal Order of Masons, Iroquois Chapter #236, the Paris Gun Club and the Mohawk Valley Rifle Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carma; and his beloved son, William Rockwell Il.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Elizabeth Piazza; his grandchildren, James (Paula) Piazza II, Kelly (David) Shimkus and Nicholas Austin Piazza, all of Scotia; his stepdaughter, Regina P. Winkler; and grandsons, Patrick and Michael Winkler. all of New Hartford; He also wishes to remember his former son-in-law, Patrick J. Winkler. He enjoyed his qreat-qrandchlldren, Ava and Alayna Shimkus, and Jake Piazza they will miss their Pa. They brought a smile to Bill's face even in his last days.

Mrs. Carma Nencetti, age 83, of Utica, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2005, in the St. Luke's Home after a brief illness. She was born on November 2, 1921 in Frankfort, NY, a daughter of the late Cesar and Donata Caivana Nencetti.

She was educated in Frankfort schools and was the Valedictorian of her Class of 1939. She also attended SUNY Potsdam. She was married to William D. Rockwell in 1961 in the Town of Ohio, a blessed union of 44 years. Carma was employed by the General Electric Co. for many years, until her retirement.

Surviving are her beloved husband, Bill; one son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Elizabeth Piazza of Scotia, NY; one daughter, Regina P. Winkler and Michael Riscica of New Hartford; her beloved grandchildren, James R. and Paula Piazza, Kelly Lynn and David Shimkus, Nicholas A. Piazza, Patrick J. Winkler and Michael J. Winkler; her two great-granddaughters, Ava Elisabeth and Alayna Grace Shimkus; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her beloved son, William D. Rockwell II; one sister, Marie Fabrizzi; six brothers, Thomas, Joseph, Francis, William, Albert, and Carl Nencetti.

Cold Brook � Mrs. Anna Rockwell Newman, 101, formerly of Cold Brook, died December 16, 1978 at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home where she had made her home for the past six years.

She was born in Holland Patent, October 4, 1877, the daughter of the late Dean and Mary Haskell Rockwell. Her marriage to Edgar H. Newman took place November 15, 1898. Mr. Newman died in 1962.

Mrs. Newman had made her home in Cold Brook for 65 years. She was a member of the Poland Community Baptist Church and also of Kuyahoora Chapter #145, O.E.S.

Surviving Mrs. Newman are three sons, Glenn, Cold Brook, Paul, Dolgeville and Harry, Cold Brook; one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Adeline) Ryder, Poland, 25 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren and 20 great great grandchildren

He married the former Anna Rockwell in 1898. He was a member of the Baptist Church, a 50-year member of the Russia Grange, a director of the Citizens National Bank, Poland; a former director of Poland Milk Producers, and had served as president of the New Benco Co., Dolgeville. and the H. Newman and Sons, Inc., Poland.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Linus C. Ford, Newport; Mrs. Frank Ryder, Poland; six sons, Commissioner of Jurors Wesley H. E. Newman, Maurice Newman, Alfred Newman, Harry Newman, all of Poland; Glenn Newman, Cold Brook, and Paul Newman, Dolgeville.

Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Elinor) Nightingale and Mrs. William (Mary) Stubba, and a son, Douglas, all of Newport; her mother of Cold Brook; a sister, Mrs. Frank Ryder, Cold Brook, and five brothers, Glenn, Cold Brook; Wesley, Alfred and Harry, Poland and Paul, Dolgerville.

Mr. Newman was born in Cold Brook and married Ione Cruse in 1924.

Doris F. Newman, 92, of Cold Brook Street, passed away on July 21, 2005 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford, with her daughters at her side.

Mrs. Newman was born in the Town of Deerfield on June 16, 1913, a daughter of the late Herman and Mabel (Seifried) Frederick. She graduated from Oriskany High School and the Excelsior School of Business in Utica. On July 8, 1933, she was united in marriage with Alfred C. Newman in South Trenton. Doris was employed for over 25 years as a bookkeeper and accountant for K.F. McVoy, Inc. in Poland. Mr. Newman preceded her in death on October 26, 1977.

Mrs. Newman was a member and past treasurer of the North Gage Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Dorcas Circle of the Community Baptist Church, Poland. Doris was a volunteer with the Senior Citizen Tax Preparation Service for local residents.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Christopher Koszewski of Terre Haute, IN and Carla and Joe Pogonowski of Newport; one sister, Gertrude Johns of Poland; one brother, Carl Frederick of Holland Patent; four grandchildren and their spouses, Marcia and Tony Rainville of Hudson Falls, Laura and Geoff Sanning of Indianapolis, IN, Bill and Wendy Pogonowski of Lake George and Jennifer and Greg Ferency of Terre Haute, IN; ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Frederick; and a sister, Helen Roland.

Marjorie W. Newman, 91, formerly of Main Street, died on July 1, 2009, at the Presbyterian Home, New Hartford, where she had resided since September of 2008. Mrs. Newman was born on June 20, 1918, in West Rutland, VT, a daughter of the late Herbert and Bertha Wilcox.

Marjorie received her early education in Rochester and graduated from Poland High School in 1937. On October 11, 1938, she was united in marriage with Harry G. Newman in Poland. Marjorie assisted her husband in the operation of the former Newman Livestock Exchange, Newport, for many years.

Harry preceded her in death on February 9, 2002. She had served as a Cub Scout Den Leader and was a former mayor of Cold Brook. Mrs. Newman was a member of the Cold Brook United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons; one sister; two sisters-in-law; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband,

Marjorie was predeceased by her daughter, Jacqueline Kulmus, on March 29, 1990; two brothers, Lloyd and Hubert Wilcox; and two sisters, Julia Lamb and Florence Crossman.

Adaline A. Ryder, 90, formerly of Rose Valley Road, died on March 2, 2010, at the Presbyterian Home, New Hartford, where she had resided since June of 2009.

Mrs. Ryder was born on June 20, 1919, in Cold Brook, a daughter of the late Edgar H. and Anna (Rockwell) Newman. Adaline graduated from Poland Central School in 1937 and furthered her education at the Utica School of Commerce. On October 4, 1941, she was united in marriage with Rev. J. Francis (Frank) Ryder at the Community Baptist Church, Poland. She worked briefly for her brother, Paul, at Newman’s Motors in Dolgeville and was a devoted pastor’s wife and homemaker. Adaline attended the Cold Brook United Methodist Church and the many churches her husband served. Frank preceded her in death on January 25, 1998. Mrs. Ryder was a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, David W. Newman, of Cold Brook; and special friend, Joyce Leonard, also of Cold Brook. In addition to her husband, Frank, she was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Ford, and by six brothers, Maurice, Glenn, Wesley, Alfred, Paul and Harry Newman.

Former Syracuse resident Mills Perlee Noxon, 89, died Feb. 26 in Devenport, Fla.

A 1927 graduate of Syracuse University College of Engineering, Mr. Noxon also was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was active in Boy Scout Troup 1 for many years and earned the Silver Beaver Award.

He was a former member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Syracuse and was a member of Good Samaritan Church, Clearwater.

Mr. Noxon moved to Clearwater in 1971. His wife, the former Marion Arlene Rockwell died in 1988.

Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Rickett of Hermon; two sisters, Mary Holmes of Annapolis, Md., Anna Page of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Grace Noxon of Pine City; four grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

Frankfort, Jan 3 � D. Sherrill Jones, 52, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Peter Weiss, in this village after a brief illness. He came from Herkimer last Mondau to spend some time with his daughter.

Mr. Jones was born in South Trenton, January 18, 1874, a son of William and Julia Utter Jones. He married Jessie Rockwell, who died 13 years ago las November. He formerly followed the occupation of farming. He had spent most of his life in Herkimer County.

Besides his daughter, he leaves a son Cecil, Winter Park Fla; three brothers, LaVerne D., Poland; Roger E. and Frank, Prospect; 11 sisters, Mrs. Henry Hadcock, Dion; Mrs. Gertrude Hanley, Syracuse; Mrs. Fred Newman, Herkimer; Mrs. Plinney Rockwell, Herkimer; Mrs. James Garry, Waterville; Mrs. Fred Reed, Little Falls; Miss Ida Jones, Little Falls; Mrs. S. A. Rockwell, Perryville; Mrs. Walter Helmar, Prospect; Mrs Arthur Brewater, Weedsport, and Mrs. E. W. Adams, Santa Barbara, Califd.; also two grandchildren, Shirley and Jessie Weiss.

A son Dewitt, died four weeks ago and another son died about 14 years ago.

A memorial service for Dean M. Rockwell III, 77, of Buffalo and Eden, an entrepreneur, inventor and creative problem-solver, will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 28 in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Ave.

Rockwell, a native of Utica, died Sunday (Nov. 29, 1998) in Kresge Residence of Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after an illness of five months.

He was a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical and industrial engineering and a master of science degree in industrial engineering and business administration. In his junior year, he became a member of Tau Beta Pi, the school's honorary engineering society.

Rockwell, known as "Rocky," served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, attaining the rank of captain.

He began his business career as an industrial engineer for Tube Manifold Corp. in the Town of Tonawanda, a manufacturer of pressure vessels and tubular products. He was vice president and general manager.

Rockwell later formed his own company, Impact Container Corp., a manufacturer of aluminum containers. The company subsequently merged into BenzoMatic Corp. He was the holder of several U.S. and foreign patents relating to valves in aerosol cylinders and the pressurized container industr

In 1967, he formed Rockwell Handling Systems, a local distributor of Caterpillar lift trucks and other material-handling equipment systems. He was president of the company for 20 years until he retired in 1986.

After he retired from Rockwell Handling, he was instrumental in the development of automated recycling container systems mandated by the New York State bottle-deposit law.

He was an active supporter of numerous charitable organizations. He served for 13 years on the board of the Blind Association of Western New York and as its president from 1974 to 1976. He also was active with EPIC -- Every Person Influences Children -- from its inception in 1980. He served on its board and was a member of its Finance and Endowment Committee.

Rockwell was an avid skier and a member of the Concord Ski Club. He also was an enthusiastic golfer and was a member of the Country Club of Buffalo for nearly 50 years. He was a past dean of the Saturn Club and a past president of the Clarksburg Club in Eden.

He was married for 42 years to Virginia Matthews Rockwell, who died in 1988.

Surviving are his second wife, Suzanne Spaulding Murray Rockwell; three daughters, Petra R. Patterson of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Holly C. of Milwaukee and Cameron R. Greene; a son, Dean M. IV; two stepdaughters, Suzanne Murray Bissonnette of Simsbury, Ct., and Sara M. Call; a stepson, Robert A. Murray Jr. of Coral Gables, Fla.; a brother, John W. of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren; and eight stepgrandchildren.
