59921. Dorothy Virginia Guy

Dorothy Virginia Zumwalt, age 103, passed away on December 10, 2014, at Sonshine Manor in Dahlonega, Georgia. Truly Dorothy from Kansas, she was born June 28, 1911, in Iola, Kansas, and grew up in Kansas City. She married Eugene Victor Zumwalt in 1934, and moved with him to Georgia and then to California. In 1998, she moved to be with her daughter, Rosemary, and her son-in-law Isaac Levy in North Carolina and then in Georgia.

In her long life and throughout her changes of residence, she had continuity of commitments and interests. A loyal Methodist, she was a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church. A life-long quilter.


59927. Roy Ivan Ridgeway

Roy I. Ridgeway, 83, Topeka, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Ridgeway was a member of Plumber and Steamfitters Local Union No. 165 and was the first full-time business manager of the local. He was instrumental in starting the Plumbers and Steamfitters apprenticeship program in Topeka.

He was born Oct. 29, 1916, in Topeka, the son of Ed and Jesse(sic) Alena Gibbs Ridgeway. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1932.

Mr. Ridgeway was a lifelong member of Oakland Presbyterian Church and a member of Topeka Lodge No. 17 AF&AM., Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies, Arab Shrine Temple and Moose Lodge No. 555.

He married Eileen Dixon on Oct. 24, 1936, in Valparaiso, Ind. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Vern C. Ridgeway, Baton Rouge, La., and Roy D. Ridgeway and Tracy D. Ridgeway, both of Topeka; a daughter, Janel Stadler, Topeka; eight granchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ridgeway was preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Ridgeway, July 28, 1972.


Eileen Dixon

Eileen Ridgeway, 89, of Topeka, passed away, Tuesday, September 12, 2006.

She was born May 10, 1917 in Evanston, Indiana the daughter of Claude Carl and Mary Dessie (Smoot) Dixon.

She married Roy I. Ridgeway on October 24, 1936, who preceded her in death January 7, 2000.

She was also preceded in death by her son Jerry Ridgeway and a grandson Christopher Ridgeway.

Survivors include her children, Vern C. Ridgeway and his wife Rosalie, Belize, Central America; Roy D. "Butch" Ridgeway and his fiancée Arceile Combs, Tracy D. Ridgeway and his wife Glenda, and Janel Stadler and her husband Michael, all of Topeka; fifteen grandchildren and twenty seven great grandchildren.

Eileen was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She lived life fully and thought laughter was the best medicine for all ills. We miss you already.

Eileen was a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church over 60 years. She was an active member of the church choir and sang at last Sunday's service. She prepared the church flowers for many years, served as a Deacon, a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, and the Mariners. She was a former member of Moose Lodge #555 and Helena Chapter #210 Order of the Eastern Star.

PORTLAND, OR- Chester Omer Gibbs died Sun., Jan. 18, 2009 in Portland, OR, after a brief illness. He was born on May 11, 1917 in Topeka, KS, the son of Wilber Judson and Edna Mae Gibbs.

He graduated from Seaman High School, in Topeka - Class of 1934, and attended Washburn University. He married Rosemary Doyle and later divorced. To this union, he had 2 sons - William and Leslie.

He migrated west, with his father, to work in the shipyards in Portland, OR.; and after a stint in the Merchant Marine, (during World War II) took up residence there.

He married Lucile Tippey in December of 1948, who survived him, as did his son, William D. Gibbs and his wife, Donna J. Gibbs, of Alameda, CA. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Alisa Pollack, her husband Todd, and her son Shane, as well as his grandson, Robert Gibbs and his wife, Regina Gibbs, of Bali, Indonesia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister as well as his son, Leslie J. Gibbs, his wife, Joanne Gibbs and his step-daughter, Marilyn Alonzo Bofil.

Chet worked most of his adult life as a plumber, being a 65+ year member of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada. He retired, in 1984, as the Training Coordinator for UA Local 51's Plumber's Apprenticeship Program in Portland, OR.

DELAVAN �  Juanita Gibbs Sullivan, age 97, of Delavan passed away on Monday, July 20, 2015. She was born in Chicago, IL on August 3, 1917 to Clayton and Emma (Dobbelstein) Gibbs. Juanita married John Sullivan on March 17, 1942 in Chicago. He passed away on July 16, 1983.

Juanita is survived by her five children, Juan D. Sullivan, of Kenosha, William (Elaine) Sullivan, of Glenview, IL, Peggy (Joel) Duhl, of Ormond Beach, FL, Gail Sullivan, of Delavan, and Peter (Anne) Sullivan, of Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren, Carrie (Kabir) Udeshi, of Bombay, India, Clayton (Valerie) Duhl, of Ormond Beach, FL, Lauren Sullivan, of Pell Lake, WI, Julia Sullivan, of Seattle, Peter Sullivan, of Seattle, Jacqueline Sullivan, of Nashville, TN, and Caroline Sullivan, of Seattle; and three great grandchildren, Ze Udeshi, and Lillian and Miriam Duhl.

Juanita is preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; and three brothers.

Lela M. Gibbs, 87, a resident of Sun Valley West, 2156 House Street, Beloit, Wisconsin, died Wednesday March 20, 2002 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born November 7, 1914 in rural Monroe, Wisconsin the daughter of Fred C. and Anna Norder Coplien. She graduated from Monroe High School, Class of 1932, received her Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and continued post graduation studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Lela married Arthur R. Gibbs on July 19, 1947 in Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran United Brethren Church, Monroe.

Lela taught at Milton Junction, East Troy and Jefferson Elementary Schools before coming to Beloit in 1943, where she taught at Parker and Burdge Elementary Schools, retiring in 1974. She was a member of Second Congregational Church since April 6, 1950. Lela served on various church committees, the Board and 15 years as flower chairperson, was a Deaconess for many years, was active in church and Daily Vacation Bible School, and was a Sarah Chapter Member of the Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Beloit Area Retired Teachers Association, the Beloit Teachers Quarter Century Club, life member of the Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association, member and past officer of Upsilon Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, member of the West Side Fort Nightly Club, the Intermediate Women's club, R.S.V.P., and volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and Caritas.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur of 54 years; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gibbs of Beloit, brother-in-law, G.L. Otterstein of Colorado Springs, Colorado; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, and two sisters, Irma Otterstein and a sister in infancy.

Dorothy M. Gibbs, 95, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 in Sun Valley Terrace. She was born March 25, 1913 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Ross R. and Augusta Winchester Gibbs. Dorothy was a graduate of Beloit High School.

She was employed by Fairbanks Morse Company for 38 years, retiring in 1978. After retiring, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, she visited nursing home residents and supported missionary families and various charities. Dorothy was a member of the Quarter Century Club and Rock Valley Chapel and is remembered for her many years as a Sunday school teacher at People's Church.

Survivors include sister, Mildred (Harvey) Smith of Beloit, WI; nieces, Gloria (Roger) Christiansen and Debra Smith both of Beloit, WI; nephews, Harvey (Janet) Smith II of Milton, WI, and Scott (Cindy) Smith of Pollack, ID; great nieces, Nicole (Riad) Amro of Madison, WI, Jessica (Shawn) Lynes of Janesville, WI, and Rebecca Smith of Janesville, WI; great nephews, Nathaniel Smith of Madison, WI, and Christopher Smith of Boston, MA; great-great-nieces, Jenna and Sumer Amro, Abby, Julie, and Brianna Lynes, and Madison Titus; great-great-nephews, Zak and Noah Amro.

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Ross Gibbs and Arthur Gibbs.


59939. Mildred Gibbs

Mildred (Gibbs) Smith, 96, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Riverside Terrace.

Mildred was the youngest child of Ross and Augusta (Winchester) Gibbs, born on May 3, 1921 in Beloit, WI. After graduation from Beloit High School, she followed her brothers, Arthur and Ross, into the Army when women were first allowed to join the military. Basic training was in Iowa, and then she was sent to Camp Plauche in New Orleans, LA. There she met Harvey C. Smith from Brooklyn, NY. They were married May 27, 1944. The whole camp turned out for the first all military wedding on the post.

Two children were born on army bases, and later two more were born in Beloit after they had left the army.

Mildred had many careers over the years. In 1968 she and Harvey moved to Orange, CA and started their own business. When the business was sold, she earned a license to become a realtor. She kept busy even after retirement, meeting new people in local stores where she demonstrated products.

Not one to sit still, she was a life long learner, taking college courses, classes and traveling. Mildred and Harvey had many adventures in their motor home. Some trips were shared with travel buddies, going to New York for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty and to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. She wrote the group's newsletter and poems about the trips. Her greatest joy was the trips they took to discover her family's genealogy, meeting family she had never known, and leaving the stories of the ancestors for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and those yet to come. Thank you Mom.

Harvey Cooper Smith

Harvey Cooper Smith, 93, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, December 29, 2013 in Beloit Health & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born June 26, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Charles and Frances (Nemez) Smith. Harvey was a WWII veteran. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. When he was sent to New Orleans he met a Beloit, WI, WAC, Mildred Gibbs. They were the first service couple to be married on the base on May 27, 1944. Harvey served in the Military until 1949 when he returned to Beloit, WI, his wife' s hometown, to live and raise their four children.

Harvey was employed by Fairbanks Morse and later by Woodward Governor in Loves Park. IL. In 1969, he and Mildred moved to Orange, CA, where they started their own business. Harvey wasn't ready to retire when they sold their business so he and Mildred became realtors, and then he became an inspector for the city of Garden Grove, CA. Harvey enjoyed several hobbies, making award winning miniatures, square dancing and traveling with his wife in their motor home after retiring. The one highlight of these trips was the rededication of the Statue of Liberty.
