34813. Charles Leonard Keene

Charles Leonard Keene, aged 81, died at 6:40 a.m. today in the residence of a son, Earl, 611 East Madison street with whom he lived. He was ill two years. Born in Allegan, Mich., Sept. 22, 1866, he came here 58 years ago from that city.

In 1890 in Allegan he married Eva Barney. Mr. Keene was a retired Studebaker corporation employee. Surviving are his widow; a son, Earl; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a brother, Bert of South Bend; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Metzler, of Mishawaka, and two half-brothers, Mile Keene of Allegan, and Rev. Claude Keene of Wayland, Mich.


Eva Keene Barney

Mrs. Eva Keene Harrington, 85, who has lived in South Bend for 69 years, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the home of her niece, Mrs. Otis Wallace, 317 N. Eddy St. She had been Ill for 10 years. Mrs. Harrington was born in Kalamazoo.

As Eva Barney, she married Charles Keene in 1889, and then married Charles Harrington in 1908. Both preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Earl Keene of South Bend; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mary Cook of South Bend.


34818. Myrtle Mary Keene

Mrs Myrtle Mary Buck aged 69 of 1137 East Milton Street, died Thursday at her home after an illness of three months. She was born in Allegan County Michigan February 24 1877 and came here 56 years ago. On December 18, 1895 she was married to Charles A. Buck, who survives.

Other survivors are seven children; Mrs Clara Bell Brockus, Mrs Edna Anderson, Mrs Lucille Roberts, and Cecil Buck all of South Bend, Gordon and Russell at home, and Floyd of Elkhart; also a sister Mrs Minnie Metzer, Mishawaka and 4 brothers; Bert and Charles Keene both of South Bend, Milo Keene of Allegan and Rev. Claude Keene Wayland Michigan. Also 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.


Burdell M. McKee

Mrs. Burdell M. Buck, 64, of 1602 E. Fox Street, died at 1:44 p.m. Friday in St. Joseph Hospital, where she was taken by the South Bend Fire department ambulance from her home. She had been ill for two weeks. She was born in Clinton, Indiana, on Dec. 31, 1908, and came to South Bend 47 years ago from Clinton.

As Burdell M. McKee she married Cecil H. Buck on June 5, 1927, in South Bend. He survives with a son, Cecil Buck Jr. of Union, Michigan; two daughters, Mrs. Philip Schiff and Mrs. Chester A. Kil, both of South Bend; a sister, Mrs. Mae Cormican of Detroit; 12 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Mrs. Buck was known for her cooking, baking, and playing both the piano and the harmonica.


59867. Vivian Clarabelle Buck

Clara B. Brockus, 92, of West Catalpa Dr. in Mishawaka, died at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday, April 20th, in St. Paul's Health Care.

She was born in South Bend on March 7, 1913, to Charles and Myrtle (Keene) Buck.

Clara married Earl Brockus on Sept. 1, 1939, in South Bend. Earl preceded her in death on June 27, 1998. She was also preceded by her parents, two sisters, Edna Anderson, Lucille Roberts, four brothers, Floyd Buck, Cecil Buck, Gordon Buck and Russell (Red) Buck.

Clara is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Brockus had formerly worked at the South Bend Bait Company and for Century Soft Water. She was a member of South Bend Turners for many years and Albright United Methodist Church.

Clara was very social, always on the go. She loved to golf and go bowling. She had a good sense of humor and loved to tell jokes.


59868. Gordon Victor Buck

Gordon V. Buck, 81, died after an illness at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, in Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 2, 1916, in South Bend, Ind., and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Buck retired in 1977 from Century Soft Water where he was a bookkeeper. Gordon married the former Charlotte Murray in South Bend on August 10, 1947, who survives.

He is also survived by a daughter Pamela Bidwell and her husband Terry of Edwardsburg, Mich.; two grandsons, Jason and Mark Bidwell; by his sister, Clarabelle "Buck" Brockus of Mishawaka, Ind.; and by many nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, and great-great- nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Gordon was a World War II Army veteran and a lifetime member of the D.A.V.

Russell Byron (Red) Buck, 52, of 1722 East Calvert Street, died at 1:30 a.m. today in St. Joseph's Hospital shortly after he was admitted and following a sudden illness. He was born in South Bend on Nov. 30, 1918, and had lived here all his life.

On Aug. 20, 1949, he married Kathleen Herrick, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Charles, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Linda (James) Speelman of Mishawaka; two brothers, Cecil and Gordon Buck of South Bend; and three sisters, Edna Anderson, Lucille Roberts, and Vivian Clara Brockus.


Kathleen T. Herrick

Kathleen T. Buck, 74, of Pin Oak Circle, Mishawaka, Ind., died at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10 in her residence. She was born in South Bend, Ind., on Feb. 13, 1926, and had lived in this area all of her life.

As Kathleen Herrick, she married Russell B. Buck in South Bend on Aug 20, 1949. He died on May 13, 1971. Mrs. Buck was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary (Evers) Herrick.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda C. (Harold) Fleming of Mishawaka; a son, Charles F. (Rebecca) Buck of Mishawaka; two granddaughters, Kimberly Lenoir of South Bend and Jennie Stitsworth of Mishawaka; two grandsons, Charles Speelman and Russell Buck, both of Mishawaka; four great-grandchildren; and by two brothers, Richard (Martha) Herrick of Illinois and Donald (Evelyn) Herrick of Muskegon, Mich.
