34604. George L. Ward

George L. Ward passed away April 26th at the home of his brother-in-law, Albertr Abbott on River street. The cause of death was lead poising, from which he had been suffering for seven years, complicated with multiple spinal schlerosis.

Me. Ward was born in Washington, Vt., and was the son of the late Pliny and Emiline (LeBarron) Ward of Bernard. He was born in 1850 and most of his life was spent in Barnard on the farm lately sold to his son.

He is survived by a son, Victor, and wife.

He was a hard working man and held in high esteem.


Minnie G. Nettison

Greenwich - Mrs. Minnie Mattison King, widow of Ira King, died Momday morning at the Washington County Home for Aged Women where she had been since August 1925.

Mrs, King was born at Arlington, Vt., Feb 21, 1858.

Mrs, King was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clyde Keene, North Carolina; three grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

MANCHESTER DEPOT - Jan. 16. The funeral of Henry H. Squires, 78, who died yesterday in Putnam Hospital in Bennington after a long illness, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester Center. The Rev. Edgar Johnson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Manchester, will officiate.

Mr. Squires was born in Sandgate Jan. 20, 1877, the son of Charles and Hattie (King) Squires. He lived in Sandgate for 59 years, and during the past six years had lived in Pownal and Manchester Depot.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Hattie Kent Squires; a sister, Mrs. Rose Eastman of Bennington; two nephews and a niece.

Mrs. Rose A. Eastman, 82, of 211 Depot St., widow of Walter Eastman, died Saturday at Putnam Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Sandgate on Oct 2, 1888, daughter of Charles and Hattie (King) Squires. She had received her education in Sandgate. She and Mr. Eastman had residedin Shaftsbury until 1940. Mrs. Eastman had formerly been employed at the local hospital.

Survivors include three sons, Howard Thomas of Arlington, Roland and Harry Eastman, both of Bennington; three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Nora) Foster of Sunderland, Mrs. Hazel Guetti and Mrs. Ronald (Marjorie) Maroney, both of Bennington; 17 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Leroy Matteson passed away Thursday at his home in Hebron.

Mr. Matteson was born in Greenwich April 22, 1885 and was the son of A C. Matteson and Libbie King Matteson,

When a boy his parents moved to West Hebron. At 16 he left school and entered his father's blacksmith shop,

He married Lillian Knapp of Gloversville in 1906 and a daughter, Mrs. Russell Smith, and a son, Charles Matteson, both of Salem survive. Mrs. Matteson died on April 21, 1927 at Center Falls where they lived.

In I929 he married Ruth Safford of West Hebron who survives him. His children by his second marriage surviving him are Earl, Harold, Richard, Bruce, John, Clark, Glenn, Gail and Linda. His brother, Lewis Matteson, of West Hebron and his sister, Mrs. Ernest Ryder, of East Arlington, Vermont, and six grandchildren also survive him.
