Kitsap Sun (Bremerton, WA)
January 14, 1997By Travis Baker
Sun StaffCecil Haskell, one of the first dozen men hired by the Bangor ammunition base, celebrated his birthday a day early on Friday. The next night, 36,525 days after he was born, he died.
It was his 100th birthday.Haskell was alert and spoke with many of the well-wishers who gathered at Northwoods Lodge, where he lived on Schold Road north of Silverdale Friday. "I'm the most blessed person in the world," he told the audience from his wheelchair.
His talk was brief. He recounted how he was a sickly child who missed a lot of school. But it was not a trait that would follow him into adulthood. "He didn't have time to be sick," said his daughter, Tiny Hudson of Hansville. "He had to support four kids through the Depression."
Those at Friday's party came from as far as San Bernadino, Calif., and Toronto, Canada, and from as close as across the hall and across the street.
Family members present included granddaughter Frances Haskell Straughan from Toronto, and daughter Cecilia of San Bernadino.
John Schold, for whose family Schold Road is named and who worked with Haskell at Bangor, and Schold's wife, Ruth, were there.
Sarah Reece, 95 years younger than Haskell, led the singing of "Happy Birthday." Her mother, Peggy, works at Northwoods and Sarah "makes the rounds and visits people." Haskell was among them.
He had two marriages, each of 30 years or more. Both wives have died, the latest, the former Clara Prong, while they lived at Northwoods.
His middle name, McKinley, is in honor of President William McKinley, who was in office when Haskell was born, said his former neighbor, Mary Ellen Madison of Sandy Hook in North Kitsap.
After working in an Everett shipyard in World War II, he came here when Bangor opened. He was one of the first 11 men hired there, family members said. He cut timbers used to line the inside of the ammunition ships. He retired in 1965.
Poulsbo Mayor Mitch Mitchusson was at the party to proclaim Friday Cecil Haskell Day.
As if his mission was completed, Haskell weakened quickly Saturday and was taken to Harrison Memorial Hospital about 4 p.m. He died about 6:30. He was near death the early part of December, Tiny Hudson said, "He had that virus that everyone had." But he rebounded and reaching 100 became his goal. "He said 'They want me to do this,' he was living to do it," she said. He also had hoped "to go into the 21st century so he could have lived in three of them," she said. But it wasn't to be. "He had a grand celebration and he had a peaceful death," she said.

August 6, 2005George H. Haskell, 88, of Scottsbluff, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at his home.
George Harold Haskell was born in Lincoln July 23, 1917, to George W. and Emily H. (Huddleston) Haskell. During school from 1929 until 1937, George was a piano player in local and traveling dance orchestras, earning $1 per day. In 1937, at 16, he took a part time job as a mail boy at KFOR radio in Lincoln. Later he followed Central States Broadcasting Corporation to Omaha where he was given the traffic/manager/programmer opportunity for KFAB and KOIL (Council Bluffs) radio. George gave Johnny Carson his first job at KFAB. They traveled the area entertaining organizations with George playing the organ while Johnny did his ventriloquist act. Years later Johnny wrote to George about a new job he got from Jack Parr with NBC ... and you know the rest of the story. Virginia May Zimmerman, his first and practically his only girlfriend captured his heart and became his wife in 1943. From 1942 until his discharge in 1946, he served with the U.S. Army and Army Air Corps, serving his country during WWII. In 1946, following his discharge from the military, he returned to Omaha and served as KFAB's Assistant Program Director and from 1956 until 1957, served as Assistant General Manager under Lyell Bremser. In 1957, George was named General Manager of Platte Valley Broadcasting Corporation, owned by Russ Stewart which consisted of radio stations KNEB-AM and KNEB-FM in Scottsbluff and KOLR-AM in Sterling, Colorado. In 1970 he became President and General Manager and Partner of KNEB-AM/FM and served in that position until his retirement in 1980. George spent his entire career in Nebraska broadcasting, serving on the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Board of Directors. He was inducted into the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 1997.
George was very involved in the Scottsbluff community, serving on many civic Boards and committees. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a proud and active member of the Scottsbluff-Gering Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and served as the editor of the Rotary newsletter for many years.
George enjoyed music, especially playing the piano and organ. He also enjoyed his yard and gardening, but most of all he enjoyed living, including entertaining his family members and many friends in his home. More importantly, George was a wonderful father and mentor and was a tremendous man. The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to Prairie Haven Hospice, Randy Guzman and Dolly Butler.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Stu and Cindy Haskell of Ft. Collins, Colo., daughter and son-in-law Julie and Jeff Gade of Lincoln, grandchildren Matt and Skylar Haskell of Ft. Collins and Cole Gade of Lincoln.
His parents; his wife Virginia; sister Eva Miller and brother Clarence Haskell preceded him in death.
