October 19, 2022Sally Foss Haskell, age 89, passed away with loving care and compassion from family and staff at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn, Maine on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022.
Born at Mary Alley Hospital in Marblehead on July 16, 1933, Sally was the daughter of Walter and Hope Green Foss. She attended Marblehead schools and then attended and graduated from Middlebury College in 1955.
Sally earned a BA in English and was a member of the Middlebury alpine ski team. The many friends she made during her childhood and at Middlebury remained a part of her life, cherishing annual Christmas card writings and various reunions.
In 1956, she married her beloved Edward "Ted" Haskell. Together, they lived and raised their children in Marblehead for 43 years before retiring to Dataw Island, South Carolina, where they lived for 13 years. Dataw was a whole new world of activities and adventures, including frequent visits from family and close friends.
Ted and Sally had a remarkable 56-year marriage that included so very many wonderful true friends, travels and family memories. They were members of the Swampscott Beach Club, Tedesco Country Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club, all of which created activities and social events to be involved in.
Sally poured all of her motherly loving care into her family, friends and community, sewing, knitting, taxiing, baking, hostessing, teaching, fundraising and serving in various organizations. She was always busy, involved, full of energy, and on the go. Thus, Ted endearingly called her "Tiger," by which name she became known to many.
Professionally, Sally held sales positions at the former Cran Barry in Marblehead for 10-plus years followed by the New England Life Insurance Company until she retired.
Following the death of her husband Ted in 2012, Sally moved to Maine to be closer to family, living at Atlantic Heights Assisted Living in Saco and then Schooner Memory Care in Auburn. The Haskell family is grateful to all who helped to enrich and enhance her life during that 10-year period, especially through very difficult, isolating times during COVID. Sally always continued her vivacious and social being, making friends and influencing people. These lessons learned will live on in her family's and friends' lives.
Sally is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Lee) Haskell Gaudette of Turner, Maine, her husband, Rene, and their children, Andrew and Abbie Gaudette Exner, and Abbie's husband, Phillip; her son, Robert Randall Haskell of Holderness, New Hampshire, his wife, Annie, and their children, Ryanne and Mardene; her son, Christopher Foss Haskell of Beaufort, South Carolina, and his life partner, Monica Pennington; and many dear nieces and nephews.
