Vergie M. Tawney, age 88, died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Gardens of Western Reserve.

She was born February 23, 1915 in Mingo County, W.V., the daughter of the late Marion and Martiann Mullins.

A Streetsboro resident since 1959, she had worked as the dining room manager at the Aurora Country Club and head waitress at the Holiday Inn on Route 8 in Hudson. She attended Faith Baptist Church in Streetsboro.

Survived by her son, Joseph ( Bobbie ) Tawney of Streetsboro ; granddaughter, Tabitha Teter ; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Tawney in 1994.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Carolyn S. Judge, 86, of Painesville, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Lake East Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 1912, in Perry, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George and Edith Salkeld.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Judge, in 1956.

She was a 1930 graduate of Harvey High School, and was captain of the girls' basketball team.

She worked for the FP&E Railroad in the 1940s and The Municipal Court of Hagerstown from 1948 to 1958. She then was executive director of the Red Cross of Lake County; and retired as a supervisor in the sample department at Fasson in 1978.

She was a member of First Church, Congregational of Painesville.

She was a past matron of Urania Chapter 284 Order of the Eastern Star; past president of Professional Business Women of Hagerstown; a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; election board judge for the Republican Party of Lake County. She played golf in three leagues and volunteered at Lake East Hospital.

She is survived by a niece, Glenda Hill of Houston; five nephews, Peter Deane of Leroy, Ohio, Barry Deane of Painesville, Vance Roth and Brian Roth, both of Mentor, Ohio, and Stephen Salkeld of Pennsylvania; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; three great-great-nieces; and two stepdaughters, Lady Diane Knill of England and Jane Whitted of Reno, Nev.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Deane and Sally Roth; a brother, George M. Salkeld; and a nephew.


John Corr Judge

JOHN CORR JUDGE, instructor in mathematics and traffic at Hagerstown Junior College since its founding ten years ago, died suddenly at his home, 1106 Oak Hill Ave., Tuesday evening. Death occurred from complications, at the age of 55. Mr. Judge was born at Ahughill County Antrim, Ireland, a son of Robert and Kezia Corr Judge.

He was a graduate of the University of Chicago, where he received his Ph.B degree, and taught at Penn Township High School, Pittsburgh before coming to Hagerstown.

In addition to his teaching duties, he was internal auditor for the Fairchild Aircraft Division. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and the Traffic Club.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn S. Judge; two daughters, Miss Diane C. Judge, of London, England and Miss June Corr Judge, at home; his parents, who reside in Carickfergus, North Ireland; three sisters, Miss Lucy Judge of Lincoln, England and Miss Isza Judge and Mrs. Tom McVae, both of North Ireland; and three brothers , Ernest, of Dublin, Stanley, of Australia, and Robert, of England.

Bentley O. Clark, 89, a former Methow Valley resident, died on Sunday, May 24, 1998, at the Life Care Center in Bothell.

He was born on April 2, 1909, in Mutual, Okla., to Ernest and Minnie Clark.

Bentley married Oleata Ritterhouse in 1928, at Mutual, Okla.

Bentley worked at Mutual until 1934. In October of 1934 they moved to Twisp where he worked in the Otto Wagoner Mill. In 1940 they bought a 40-acre orchard in Carlton and lived there until 1964. They moved to Twisp and built a home.

Bentley's wife of 60 years, Oleata, preceded him in death in October of 1988. Bentley continued to live at the home in Twisp until 1995 when he moved to Bothell.

Bentley was a founder and longtime member of the Carlton Methodist Church and later a member of the Twisp Methodist Church. He was very active in the Masonic Lodge of Twisp, joining in 1944 and raised to the 3rd Degree in 1945. Bentley was worshipful master in 1964, also worthy patron six times in the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his daughter, Betty Kenison of Seattle; sons Ned Clark of Pateros and Dick Clark of Lewiston, Idaho; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Bentley was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Cleo, Vernon and Herb, and a sister, Lilly Mae.
