Mildred E. (Haskell) Flaherty, was born on April 2 1908 in Cambridge the daughter of Charles W. and Annie T. (Neville) Haskell.

She was married to Mr. John D. O'Flaherty. Eventually the family lost the O in there name.

Together they had three daughters Mrs. Eleanor E. (Flaherty) Jensen, Mrs. Maureen (Flaherty) McDonald, and Mrs. Linda A. (Flaherty) Leary; they also had five sons, Mr. Robert J. Flaherty, Mr. John D. Flaherty Jr, Mr. Donald F. Flaherty, Mr. James Flaherty, and Mr. Richard H. Flaherty. She also leaves numerous grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren. She was the sister of Annie, Blanche, Marietta, Doris, Warren, Russell, and Francis Haskell.

John D. Flaherty, 78, of 14 Easton Court, formerly of Billerica, Mass., died December 24 at Palm Beach Regional Hospital after a long illness.

He was married for 46 years to Mrs. Mildred E. (Haskell) Flaherty, who died August 2 1983. Born December 31, 1914 in Cambridge the son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. and Mary K. (Murphy) O'Flaherty.

He was a resident of Billerica for many years before moving to Florida in 1973. Before his retirement in 1972, Mr. Flaherty had worked for Lever Bros. for 30 years.

He is survived by four sons, Richard Flaherty of Hudson N.H., James Flaherty of Alfred Maine, John and Donald Flaherty, both of Pompano Beach, Fla; three daughters Eleanor Jensen of Tyngsboro MA, Mauree McDonald of Cheifland Fla, and Linda Leary of Enfield, Conn. A brother James Geaney, and five sisters, Hannah, Bridget, Elinor, Julia, and Mary. 17 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Robert Flaherty, who died August 9, 1979.

The funeral for Effie Rutherford, 86, Route 2, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Buck Funeral Home, Norwood. Burial will be in Dailey Ridge Cemetery, Norwood.

Mrs. Rutherford died Tuesday in Vassar Brothers Hospital, Poughkeepsie. She had been ill for two months.

Surviving are a son, Thomas, Madrid; two daughters, Maude Kahrs, Garrison, and Arlene Bliven, Connersville, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Bellus, Norwood, and a sister, Jessie Farmer, Norwood.

Born in Norfolk on April 30, 1906, a daughter of Charles and Tacie Crites Bellus, she married Bennett W. Rutherford on Oct. 30, 1929. He died Sept. 14, 1949.

Mrs. Rutherford owned and operated a dairy farm until her retirement.

She was a member of the Dailey Ridge Presbyterian Church.

Herman J. Kahrs, age 73, of Garrison, NY, died on Friday, October 15, 2004 at his residence in Garrison. Born in Union City, NJ on February 7, 1931, he was the son of the late Herman and Bertha (Krohn) Kahrs.

Mr. Kahrs was the owner and operator of House of Platzl, Inc. in Pomona, NY. He has been a resident of the Garrison area since 1979 coming from Highland Mills, NY. Mr. Kahrs was a U.S. Army Veteran serving from 1953-54, a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Philipstown, and the American Legion of Pomona.

He is survived by his wife, Maude (Rutheford) Kahrs of the home address. He is also survived by four children: Susan Kahrs of Cold Spring, NY; Stephen Kahrs of Beacon, NY; Eric Kahrs of Bloomington, IN and Kristine Kahrs of Los Angeles, CA. Two brothers: Edward Kahrs of Addison, VT and Robert Kahrs of Utah. In addition three grandchildren: Shay, Alyssa and Ceilidh also survive.

Funeral services for 78 year old Thomas C. Rutherford, 3197 State Highway 310, Madrid, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Dailey Ridge Church with Rev. Mike Sedore presiding. Burial will be held in the Dailey Ridge Cemetery.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Marie, Madrid; his two sons, William Rutherford, Madrid and James and Valerie Rutherford, Cape Canaveral, FL; his two sisters, Maude Kahrs, Cold Spring, and Arlene and David Bliven, Connersville, Indiana; one cousin, Linda Donnelly; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Potsdam on July 22, 1932 to the late Bennett and Effie Bellus Rutherford. He was a self-employed farmer.


David Lawrence Bliven

David Lawrence Bliven, age 83, died on March 23, 2016 in Tucson, Ariz. The oldest of five children, David was born to Lawrence Willard and Anna Smith Bliven on Nov. 25, 1932 in Oxford, N.Y. He is predeceased by two sisters, Doris Lawton and June Teel, his brother Donald Bliven, and a granddaughter, Joan Bliven.

Dave married Arlene Rutherford on Aug. 31, 1957. In addition to his wife, survivors include his sister Elinor Beebe of Grants Pass, Ore., and four children; Catherine Kiser (Roger) of Pine, Colo.; Margot Bliven (Richard Rosenberg) of Hammondsport, N.Y.; Mathew Bliven (Kathryn) of Alameda, Calif.; and Adam Bliven (Holly) of Tucson, Ariz. Dave shared his life with 10 grandchildren, two great-grandsons, many nieces and nephews, as well as many loving friends.

Dave enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 and served in Germany as a radar technician. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1954, he attended Clarkson College and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Dave worked for Ingersoll Rand in Painted Post, N.Y., for 15 years and Dresser-Roots in Connersville, Ind., for 21 years, retiring in 1993. In retirement, he consulted for 10 years for Ogura Corporation. Dave was a registered Professional Engineer and active in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He inspired many children and grandchildren to pursue careers as engineers.

Dave was an active member of the Connersville community in which he and Arlene resided for 44 years. He was a member of the Connersville Country Club and served on the Fayette Memorial Hospital Board for five years, including a term as the Board president in 1988.

Dave will be remembered as a kind, gentle person with a great sense of humor and a playful attitude. He was an avid Bridge player and a legendary Scrabble competitor within the Bliven family. He was also a "hands-on engineer" who didn't shy away from any home improvement or do-it-yourself project. In addition to building two homes, he enlisted his children to construct a wood-and-canvas canoe in the family room and a sailboat in the basement. Dave enjoyed playing golf, traveling and visiting with friends. In his later years, he was happiest while spending time with Arlene, their loyal companion Sophie, and the company of extended family.
