Edward Vern Gabriel Jr.

San Jose Mercury News (CA)
November 25, 2014

The family of Edward Vern Gabriel, Jr. is saddened to announce his passing on November 18, 2014 at the age of 88. Ed passed away at his home in Millbrae, California surrounded by his loving family.

Born to Edward Vern Gabriel, Sr. and Emma Lavina McFarland in 1926, Ed was the oldest son of 13 siblings. Ed left the farm at the age 17 to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ed sailed aboard the USS Jerauld as an Electrician's Mate P-Second Class. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy Reserve in 1955, and was proud to be part of the "Greatest Generation".

After serving his country with honor, Ed settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, meeting and marrying his sweetheart, Lavern.

Together they raised two daughters in San Bruno and Millbrae, Ginger Lee Valencia (Michael) and Sharon Lavern Armanino (Vincent), his youngest, who predeceased him one month ago to make sure he had a loving smile to welcome him into heaven.

Ed had a 35 year long career as a Senior Industrial Electrician with Varian Associates -Eimac, first in their plant in San Bruno and then their headquarters in San Carlos. Also, Ed managed his own electrical company, Gabriel Electric, until 1985 when he finally gave away his work truck so that he could tell his many loyal clients he really did retire. More than anything in the world, Ed cherished his family. His greatest joy was doing things that would make his children and grandchildren happy. He would fix a broken faucet or build a go-kart for a grandchild, or a staircase for a family dog that had gotten too old to jump up onto the bed. If you need him to, Ed could put an addition on your house. He had a superior work ethic that he strived to pass on to those who ever worked with him or help him complete one of his many projects. On his 80th birthday, Ed's son-in-law said "When I do a job I ask myself "is this the way Ed would have done it?" if the answer is yes, I know it's a job expertly done".

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lavern; his daughter, Ginger Valencia; his sons-in-law, Michael Valencia and Vincent Armanino; his grandchildren, Lauren, Scott, Rachelle, Gina, Eric and his great grandchildren, Kylie, Grayson and Colton.

Being at the "Cully place" brought him great satisfaction as he remembered those wonderful childhood days.

Ivan's greatest joy came in his family relationships, particularly with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He received great joy in exploring, hiking, swimming, playing games and teaching them his favorite tricks and jokes. Many times, as the children would accompany him to the "Cully place" near Rockland, there would be a surprise for them, maybe a new trail with scary inhabitants or a new toy he had constructed. He was very creative and enjoyed using his skills to make things for the children. He also loved to tell anyone who would listen about his experiences as a Navigator on the bombers. He kept models of the planes and would show the children where he sat in the plane and the experiences he had during World War II.

In Ivan's later years he renewed his interests in sports and trained diligently in swimming and running so he could compete in the Senior Games. He participated several times in the games and received many "gold medals" and other rewards for his efforts. His commitment to training for and participating in the games was an inspiration to those who knew him. His stash of medals will be shared amongst his family as an example and remembrance of this good man.

Walker Funeral Home

Katheryn Marjorie Stewart Hickman, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed from this mortal life into eternity to join her family and loved ones beyond the veil, December 22, 2017.  Katheryn was born December 1, 1921 to Luther Kimball Stewart and Nova Belle McKenzie in Ferron, Utah.

She attended schools in Benjamin (elementary), and Spanish Fork (junior and senior high school), participating in many theatrical performances and activities.  She loved theater and loved to perform and use her developing musical talents.

Katheryn married her home-town sweetheart, Rex L. Hickman on November 20, 1940, in Benjamin, Utah.  Their marriage was solemnized February 11, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS temple.

Family, church and community were the focus of her life.  She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints faithfully fulfilling many church callings.  She was gifted in music and a beautiful pianist, willing to share her talents and love of music throughout her life.  In her later life experience, she wrote the song, "Beautiful, Dear Benjamin", that has been played and sung many times at Benjamin activities.

Mom was always home when we children returned from school or hunting or fishing trips.  She doted over us making sure we were always taken care of whether it is something to eat or school home work was taken care of.

When raising children was in the past, she and dad enjoyed attending the temple where they continued the endowment work for our ancestors who never had the opportunity to experience this for themselves. She wanted all of her family members to be sealed for time and all eternity as an eternal family, as encouraged by the gospel of Jesus Christ.  She diligently researched and found old histories and wrote many histories of the families, both the Stewart's and the Hickman's.

Katheryn learned to love the outdoor sports with her husband, Rex, taking many rides in the mountains, and going on hunting and fishing trips with the family.  She was at ease preparing a picnic lunch and riding up Diamond Fork where Rex liked to fish.  After a picnic lunch was eaten dad went fishing and mom and the kids enjoyed the camp ground where she watched or played with the kids.  Many memories are centered on these activities.

Mom's posterity numbers near the hundreds, with many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Her children are: Dan (wife Sharon), Michael (wife Janet), Brent (wife Nadine), Margie (husband Jay) Gabbitas, Charles (wife Pam), Kevin Hickman, and Merlin (wife Shellie).

She was preceded in death by her husband Rex and son Brent.
